               “have to be to do what i do— or about to do.” he looked back at the smaller blonde as he shook his head ever so slightly. “it’s—- he’s already here. that’s all i know, but something is off so i’m just getting my thoughts together before i go.”

“Are you going to kill someone?” Megan humored a little as she looked up at the taller companion. “So, your target is already here. Cold feet?” She asked before sipping her warm drink again. “The offer stands, you know. For a telepath, organizing a mind is like organizing files. I’m very good at both.”

“No need.” Louis really, really did not care for telepaths. “I was attempting a science project. That science project went wrong somewhere along the way. Obviously.”

“I can see that.” Megan said with a little laugh at the end of her sentence. “Hopefully, it wasn’t me distracting you.”

“of course none of it has been easy but look at where i am now – i have a beautiful daughter and i wouldn’t change that for the world, i guess you might understand when you have kids.” he said to the girl as he ran his fingers through his hair. “i know that you aren’t like me but is it bad for me to wish you were a little bit less like your mother?” the man sighed as he listened to her speak. “they aren’t going to hurt us. we are stronger than ever, it wouldn’t hurt to show a little bit of vulnerability, at least to your father.”

“God no.” Megan visibly shuddered when he mentioned her having kids. “I’m more interested in taking down hedge funds and corporate take downs.” She couldn’t imagine the life of action her parents had was for her, let alone the idea of actually having kids. To her, that was a big no. "And what is wrong with being like her?” She looked away briefly before looking back at him. “Why does it matter?”

Emily made her way through the various racks of clothes, her eyes scanning the colors for a particular piece. Finding something that looked vaguely similar to what she thought she needed, the young mutant pulled out the shimmery shirt and held it up for Megan to see. “Too extravagant or am I losing my touch?”

Megan looked over her shoulder to see what Emily was showing her. “Do I need to check inside your head to see if something is wrong with you?” Megan asked as she walked over and looked at it. “This is a no. Look at it. Like a tin foil project by a four year old.” She humored.

He researched for the lab’s fire extinguisher and began to spray it on the failed project, allowing the silence between them to hand. Louis placed the equipment on the table next to them and stared at his experiment. “I have been working on a- thing.” He pulled his safety goggles off. “The thing is not going too well.”

“A thing.” She repeated his words. The blonde looked at the charred mess but she couldn’t really work it out herself. “What was you even trying to do? or do I need to peek into your head to understand it.”

               “maybe not pink, but maybe white.” he didn’t know the woman very well, they’d only spoken at the island and hadn’t seen her since. they were complete opposites, the very fact that she was still talking to him was surprising enough. “if it’ll distract me from everything go for it, don’t really mind.” he didn’t quip back anything snarky, something he would’ve done but he appreciated the company knowing being alone was never a good way to deal with things.

“Least your observant.” She offered half a smile before she sipped on her warm drink again as she looked back out to the view he seemed to be taking in. “Well, I assume you are waiting for something. Though I don’t know if it is worth just standing here waiting for it. Was it some sort of important delivery?”

“and what mistakes are so bad that we made that makes you ashamed of us for it?” he asked with a raised brow. scott wanted nothing more than to make his daughter happy but a lot of the time she made it very hard for him. “well it sure doesn’t seem like it megan – i love you more than anything and i would never abandon you.”

“Are you telling me that that the choices you’ve made has made life easy for you? You and mom faced so much and it has affected you both. I don’t want to be like that.” Megan was proud of what they did but she didn’t want to suffer the same way they did. It just seemed cruel. “Then accept I’m not like you. I can’t just...show all my cards.” It was a strange thing to compare her emotions to a hand of cards but the idea of letting her guard down was terrifying. She had seen what happened to people when they did. “You know for people like us, we can’t afford to be vulnerable for a second before they try and exterminate us again.”

             he was surprised the blonde hadn’t already taken a look, but that was just his anger towards shield speaking. she had no part in it. eyes stared blankly at the grass in front of him as fingers tapped the cup rather quickly. frustration apparent in his sigh as he attempted to find the right words. “i’ll get over it—- nothing that’ll interest you.”

“Right, because if it isn’t adorned in Chanel or pink, I must not be interested, right?” Megan asked as she looked over at him before she sipped her latte. She wouldn’t be surprised if that was the impression he had. After all, one of her favourite things were highly priced clothing. “I could go on about how much my shoes cost all day if you prefer that?”

“in what universe is my life perfect to you?” he asked with a raised brow. “my daughter couldn’t care less about me by the looks of it and i clearly can’t keep a relationship going so please tell me how thats perfect.” scott shouldn’t have lashed out at his daughter but he also wasn’t going to let her be rude to him.

“This isn’t about you being perfect. You and darling Ma are far from perfect. I am just conscious about not making the same mistakes you two did.” As he said she didn’t care, Megan held her breath for a second as her lips formed thin lines. “Like father, like daughter.” She replied. As she stood there, she simply stared back at him, the two having a similar temperament. “I care.” Finally giving in. “I just have typical daddy issues and fears of abandonment. That is what mother says anyway.”

scott ran his fingers through his hair as he listened to his daughter. “all i wanted was a hug – not to take over your life megan.” he stated. “half of the kids here are probably trying to make a name for themselves and get out of their parents shine but there no need to be rude.” scott looked over and his daughter and shook his head. “and your mothers mouth is one of the reasons that i left her.”

“I’m sorry that I am the spawn of emotionally stunted individuals.” She humored dryly as she looked up at him. She loved him so much. It was her dad after all. However, she just never knew how to express her emotions properly. “Is that a threat?” Megan asked, her eyes narrowing as her head tilted a little. “Because I wouldn’t want to impose on your new perfect life with your new family.”

               francis had gotten the messages ever since he was growing up, but now it felt off. missions didn’t take this long and he was starting to worry. it was apparent in the way he stood, shoulders tensed as he stood looking out into the open drinking a cup of coffee. he rarely stood still, rarely stood quietly just watching, waiting for any sign of his father to show his dumb face around. nothing. the silence was killing him. even his mother communicated despite not being at the academy. hand steadily held the cup as his gaze remained on the grass, much like he did as a kid. just a small blond boy awaiting by the window to see his father arriving with a pizza in hand, smile on his face because everyone was safe but that wasn’t happening. a figure blocked the light, gaze dropped slightly, “sorry, what?”

“I said it is nice to not see you laying in the dirt for a change.” Megan tilted her head as she looked at him. It didn’t really take a mind reader to see he was in deep thought about something. Her own hands held a Starbucks disposable cup between them as she looked to where his eyes were gazing to but she couldn’t see anything of particular interest to her. “A penny for your thoughts?”

scott raised a brow as he looked over at his daughter. “and you think i care about that? you could be forty and i will still make you hug me – its what fathers do.” he stated as he took a step towards her. “hey, don’t give me that attitude.”

“You should. I want to be taken seriously and not because of who my parents are.” She strived so much to try and impress them. Before, it was her own misguided attempt in hopes it would keep her parents together. Now, it was so people would take her seriously for herself and not who her relatives were. “You gave me pragmatism. Mother gave me her sharp tongue.”
