verse post, the summer i turned pretty.
every summer, eddie packs up the truck and takes christopher down to the beach house, the one that’s been in the family for as long as he can remember, though really it’s tia pepa's house. always was. she’s the one who took him in when his parents didn’t know what to do with him over the summer, when they couldn’t handle the kid who wanted more than what they were offering. she gave him space to breathe, to figure himself out, to try and not feel like a constant failure. and now? it’s the only place that’s ever felt like home. the only place he doesn’t feel like he’s carrying every version of himself on his back.
at the beach house, he’s not firefighter diaz. not sergeant diaz. not the guy who lost his wife. he’s just eddie. just a dad trying to give his kid the kind of summer he never had. a summer filled with sand between their toes, burgers on the grill, bonfires crackling at night instead of the sounds of sirens or gunfire. some days, it feels like the closest thing to peace he’s ever known. even if he doesn't think he necessarily deserves it.
the summers there all kind of blur together — old friends stopping by, old flames that maybe never fully went out, laughter spilling across the porch, the waves lapping in the background. but this summer? something’s different, cousins is changing. houses being sold, families moving away, the neighborhood doesn’t feel the same. it’s like the place is growing up, just like christopher is. and eddie’s caught between wanting to hold onto it and knowing he probably can’t.
christopher’s asking more questions this year. about shannon. about why she left. about her death. about the army. about why people don’t always come back. eddie’s never been great at answers, especially the ones that hurt. sometimes he stands out by the water, watching the waves roll in, thinking about everything he’s tried to outrun: the heat of the desert, the fireline, the mistakes, the regrets. the things that still burn if he lets them get too close. at night, when chris is asleep, eddie sits by the fire pit, watching the flames die down. he thinks about shannon, about the promises that didn’t stick. about the guys he left behind overseas. about the parts of himself he buried to make it through. he wonders if this is as good as it gets, or if somehow, there’s still something waiting for him out there.
this summer feels different. like an ending, or maybe a beginning, depending on how you look at it. eddie’s not sure yet. but as long as chris is laughing in the waves, as long as the fire’s still burning, he’s gonna keep coming back. trying to give his kid the kind of summer that feels like magic, even if the magic’s a little harder to hold onto these days.
emergency preparedness king, he keeps a fully stocked trauma kit and fire extinguisher at the beach house, and has checked the house’s smoke detectors, fire exits, and evacuation plan every summer without telling anyone. it's instinct; he can't not do it.
volunteer backup, on more than one occasion, the local volunteer fire department has called him in a pinch ( small town, limited resources ). he’s responded to a few brush fires or minor house fires while staying for the summer, though he tries to keep it from chris so their vacation still feels like an escape far from danger.
quiet watcher at bonfires, whenever there’s a big beach bonfire. eddie's lowkey the one keeping an eye on the fire itself, making sure no one gets too close, watching the sparks, subtly putting out stray embers.
fisher family connection, when they were teenagers, he was a few years younger than susannah and helped put out a small kitchen fire at their house. it's a family story now, but he still downplays it as nothing. he's very close to all of them and takes on an uncle figure for the conklin's and fishers.
practical but sentimental, jeremiah or conrad once asked eddie if he ever misses the adrenaline of firefighting when he’s at cousin's. eddie had told them that he did, but that he missed the people more. and that stuck with them.
verse post, a sworn guardian's oath.
once an army medic and then a firefighter, edmundo is now a sworn guardian. he’s a warrior bound by an ancient pact to protect the mortal realm from many supernatural threats. when he fell on the job fighting a fire, he was brought back by a pact that embodies a sacred agreement between fallen warriors / beings who protect and a supernatural order. the fire that took his mortal life also granted him rebirth — both as a man and as a warrior of flame.
the sworn guardians, which eddie becomes a part of, is an order of knights who after dying in a battle where they’re meant to be defending or fighting for a cause, are resurrected with enhanced abilities and blessed by celestial forces to continue their duty. the caveat is that the pact did come at a cost. every time he saves a life, a piece of his soul burns away, bringing him closer to his final reckoning. the only thing that anchors him to his humanity is his son, christopher, who has a rare connection to the celestial realm, able to see and communicate with spirits that eddie can't. this ability is unknown to mostly all.
he still finds himself in the heart of los angeles, but location can be verse dependent, and magic lingers in the shadows while firehouses double as sanctuaries for those hunted by dark forces. eddie must navigate his duty as both a father and a warrior. with buck, who is his closest ally, and the rest of his firefighting family, he fights not just against the flames of destruction, but the darkness and evils that seek to consume the world. with every battle he fights, the fire inside him grows stronger, and if he loses control, he risks becoming the very force he swore to fight. he'll become a torrid flame. his abilities as a sworn guardian include:
fire resistance, his connection to fire goes beyond just resistance to heat. his body can both absorb and control flames in a limited capacity, basically turning him into a walking conduit for fire. when he's injured, his body can channel fire to heal, but this comes at a cost. overusing this ability could accelerate the burning of his soul, forcing him to make tough choices about when to use it.
heightened reflexes, reflexes are not only enhanced physically but also are influenced by his supernatural connection to time. eddie can momentarily slow down his perception of time, allowing him to react at a superhuman level, whether it's dodging a dangerous blow, saving someone from a falling object, or even executing intricate and precise movements. this ability is closely tied to the concept of fate — the more he uses it, the more he feels the weight of predestination and his inevitable reckoning.
ability to sense danger, this is more like a heightened sixth sense. he can feel a shift in the air when something dark or dangerous approaches. it's like a low hum in his veins kinda, or a heavy presence that lingers before harm. it can extend to detecting supernatural threats, whether it's a demon, ghost, or something much older and more ancient. this ability doesn’t always give him specific details but gives him a general sense of what’s coming, and it allows him to act quickly to protect.
guardian's flame, this is a flame that resides within eddie and it's more than just a force of destruction; it’s a force of salvation. he can summon the guardian's flame in moments of great need, creating walls of fire that protect him and others, or wielding fire as a weapon against enemies. this flame burns not only with physical heat but also with an otherwordly quality. the more he uses this power, the stronger the flames become but also the more dangerous. losing control of this could cause eddie to burn others or himself, especially if his emotional state is unstable at the same time.
flame manipulation, beyond just fire resistance, he can manipulate flames to a degree. he can shape and control fire to create barriers or weapons. this ability comes in handy for both fighting the supernatural and saving lives from burning locations. it also allows him to use the fire to clear paths or disable magical areas.
these abilities make him a strong and powerful first responder in a world where fire is not just an element but a living force. in this verse there can be various elements that are living forces, and it can totally be plotted out in dynamics. whatever you desire. can also blend this with existing fantasy universes and characters!
connection to the firehouse sanctuary, station 118 firehouse not just a place of work but a sanctuary that eddie is spiritually linked to. it's kind of like a nexus where supernatural forces converge. he can draw upon the sanctuary’s energy, but the sanctuary’s protection comes with the price of eddie's bond to it. if the sanctuary is in danger, then he risks everything.
miscellaneous facts, his abilities can very well be in low fantasy and present day if desired, just with abilities. or it can be in a high fantasy setting. since the fire house is involved, i'll lean toward low fantasy if we don't specify it. he's bound to protect, but each time he saves someone, he loses a piece of himself. his devotion to his son becomes increasingly critical, as chris' connection to the celestial realm might be the only way to save eddie from burning out entirely. but this is something he'll grapple with on his own / internally.
