How to describe a soul searing love? Sounds overwhelming don’t it? I thought about this for the longest time until the jumbled thoughts congealed together —— this is a love impossible to anticipate, it sweeps in like a wildfire, every subsequent act only fans the flames, it proceeds to torch the darkest corners of your soul until it becomes the dull ache in the core of your bones. This is a love that will awaken every fiber of your being, yet it also the most dangerous thing you ever encounter. This is the love between Ruoxi and her 4th Prince.
With her knowledge of history, Ruoxi was always extremely cautious around 4th. The icy coldness serves as a formidable deception in hiding the fiery heat simmering beneath the surface. Discovering the fire that drives 4th must have stunned Ruoxi, yet it served to lock her heart forever with him.
I cried a river when Ruoxi made the decision to leave 4th Prince. He was the man she gave her entire heart to, to protect their love she willingly spent 6 years doing harsh labor as a lowly palace maid, for his sake she betrayed the trust of the late Emperor, and finally for him she broke down against her modern sensibility towards polygamy and fully accepted the role of a Qing woman and that of his lover. There was an indescribable sadness to see the distance widening between them, but also incredible relief as well when she finally left his side. As Emperor, 4th was ruthless, I don’t blame him to it, but I also understand Ruoxi’s misery because those bearing the brunt of his cruelness are those closest to her heart.
Ruoxi’s last letter to 4th summed up their love beautifully …
“4th prince, Life is like a dream, continuously changing…But the days pass soundlessly…It’s hard to forget one’s foolish longings.
When someone told me very calmly that he wanted the throne, he already held the key to my heart. When he threw away the umbrella and endured and suffered the rain with me, I had opened the door to my heart for him. When he protected me by using his own body to block the arrow, I would never forget him in this life.
Everything that happened after that only drew me in deeper…If there is love, there is anger. If there is love, there is hate. If there is love, there is obsession. If there is love, there is longing.
