yao ling had been too young to grasp the gravity of death not directly influencing him when lan fan’s parents had died. it had been enough to instill in him the morals he still carries to this day, to make him understand the injustice of their lives and swear to protect lan fan as fiercely as she did he. but he hadn’t fully grasped what it actually meant.

his parents are the emperor and an imperial consort and he had been passed to a wet nurse nearly as soon as he was born. his transition into the role of prince instead of princess had been so smooth only because he exists as little more than an idea in his parents minds. he was raised by servants and the lan and he did not know what it really meant to have a mother and father. how could he understand what it was to lose that which he did not already have ?

he remembers the year he had asked lao fu where lan fan had gone for the day and he had gone solemn and explained very carefully that she had gone to spend her birthday with her parents in the memorial hall. he could feel an argument he hadn’t been a part of and decided not to ask more. once a year lan fan would go missing for a day and ling simply didn’t address it for lack of understanding how. it was his family’s fault her parents were dead. what right did he have to interrupt her grieving with comfort he didn’t know how best to provide ?

it is the birthday after they return from amestris that he finally works up the courage to join her. things are changing. his position is better than it has ever been, and his sibling are all furious about it. their father is still going to die eventually and they know he has won himself the crown. their days are busy and long and they have not made the trip here together since they returned. ling says a small prayer of apology to her parents as he settles on his knees beside her. there are other people here, leaving offerings and visiting their loved ones but no one bothers the two of them.

“ i can leave, if you don’t want me here, ” he says, barely above a whisper after a long moment of silence. his heart is doing something funny and he doesn’t know whether or not to blame his health. “ i know you’re not really alone, but i wanted to keep you company anyway. if you’ll have me. ”

his vision is limited in the dark. the damage to his sight is pervasive and of great frustration and inconvenience. he had blamed it, initially, for the specters and visions that come to him. when they had started speaking he’d had no more excuses. the hour draws late and he had intended to retire soon, but now as he casts a glance back into the darkness beyond the entrance to his study he doubts he will receive any such mercy.

“ what do you want, oh cruelest of visions ? ” he calls, finding some humor at least in their predicament.
