[POST-BEAT] ft. Daughter - "Medicine"
I heard a gorgeous song today that stopped me dead in my tracks. It's called "Medicine" and it's by Daughter, from their current EP "Wild Youth". I highly recommend you check it out. Click on the album cover to hear the track or click here: http://youtu.be/lrulQAZq7Y8
Pick it up, pick it all up / and start again / You've got a second chance / You could go home / Escape it all / It's just irrelevant /
It's just medicine / It's just medicine
You could still be what you want to / What you said you were when I met you / You've got a warm heart / You've got a beautiful brain / But it's disintegrating /
From all the medicine / From all the medicine
You could still be what you want to be / What you said you were when you met me / You could still be what you want to / What you said you were when I met you / When you met me / When I met you
The lyrics alone are so moving and Elena Tonra's performance draws every bit of emotion out of them. I suggest you give it a listen and let it send you off to sleep.

[POST-BEAT] ft. selections from Citizens! - "Here We Are"
Hey, Dominic here! Welcome to the first entry of our new blog series, [POST-BEAT]
Those of you that have heard last year's debut, "From the Bright Side" (which you can still download for free from www.digtheoverground.com/media), know that lyrics are a major part of our style. In fact, the first time we wrote together less than a year ago we found that our styles were perfectly complementary, layering dark poetic undertones beneath suggestive themes and playful games.
Well, you can imagine my surprise when Google failed to provide me with a decent lyric-centric blog for all the fantastic shit that's been coming out of the indie scene. Really? 150,000 indie music blogs and not one that focuses on lyrics???
(By the way, if you know of any, feel free to comment or email so I can check it out)
Anyway, since our blog's just been sitting here collecting dust, I figured I'd use it to cover up this glaring hole in indie music criticism. And I'm pretty excited. Our first entry features the debut of UK band CITIZENS! (www.citizenscitizens.com), entitled "Here We Are". It was released overseas last week, but we're still waiting for it stateside. The first song I heard from them was "Let's Go All The Way" and I was immediately blown away. This guy can write! Here's a sample:
http://youtu.be/d_iuPl7IKKE <-----Click for the Video
Late day comin', this could make the runnin' / This could be a real world war / Know much better than you'll ever tell her / Still you keep it all in store / Next year's scandals greasing up the handles / You best save your breath for blowing out candles / We're in trouble, wading through the rubble / This is what the heart beats for...
Let's go all the way / Even if we have to pay / Never let a heart get away / Never let it hesitate / One day you'll be sure / One day you'll be out the door / Never let your heart get bored / Even when your two and two do not make four no more
...
I heard the voices of the gods as they spoke to each other last night / We thought that we were so small, but they spoke out our names as if we were kings / And they listed our deeds and undertakings / They were cruel as you like / But we laughed anyway / We really thought we'd hear them say...
Let's go all the way...
^ Beautiful! I had to listen to that one through a few more times before I could move on. The bridge is so unexpected, and it adds a completely different texture both lyrically and musically.
Another one of my favorites was "Reptile", which can also be found on last month's "Caroline EP"
http://youtu.be/wA0lYaekxxk <------Click for the Video
There ain't no wires / Connecting your heart / To your head and your hands / So where should you start? / There aren't satellites guiding you home / So careful as you tread in this carnival of souls / Don't let your blood run cold...
This is not a city / That wants to forgive / This is the place / Where the cold hearts live / Feeding off your friends / And finding out late / Everybody wants it / But nobody waits / Don't let your blood run cold...
I'm turning into a reptile! / Sitting alone on a park bench just like a reptile / Closer than I've ever dreamt / A reptile...
^ The first verse is simple perfection, describing the somber distortion of a city's dark side and offering a warning, just before succumbing to the chorus and its strangely upbeat loneliness.
If you enjoyed those two tracks, make sure you keep an eye out for the US release of "Here We Are", which you can stream in its entirety here:
http://themusic.com.au/listen/all/2012/05/29/citzens-here-we-are/
And if you're a lover of lyrics, like we are, I suggest you check back here every couple days. We'll be bringing you our favorite indie-poetics from the newest releases, as well as re-hashing some of our old favorites.
And later this summer, I'm sure we'll be sharing some of the lyrics from our upcoming EP! We hope you'll come back to enjoy them with us!
