hi! would you be willing to share the AO3 username of the author who wrote Body Language? I can't find the link either. Private message is fine. Just wanting to look over what else I might have read from them (if I have read anything) and be more knowledgeable in my approach to fanfiction featuring women of colour moving forward. thanks!
yup! her name is simplyprologue on ao3 and she has about 40 mohabbot fics
also just a brief update for anyone who cares these are some things that have happened in bodytalks so far (chpater 6):
Samira is a virgin but Jack gets a rich sex life even after being a widow (i've talked before that i hate that men are never inexperienced in media and this is such a prime example of that)
samira gets attacked by a patient and ofc jack is her white knight
jack calls samira "sam"
idk if i've ever said on this blog before but i hate when fics give her the very anglicized nickname of sam when mira is right there
ok, no. Now my thoughts went to Samira motorboating reader because her day at the pitt was too long. Save me Samira being a bit of a perv. (Also, reader doesn't have to be a girl, just have some fat tits ❤️)
we love tig ole biddies in this house 🙂↕️
You're sleeping on the couch when Samira comes home. You'd been waiting for her, drifting off as your favourite show plays in the background for the umpteenth time . Her bag flops on the floor, waking you with a start. You're still half asleep when she drops herself into your lap.
"Long shift," you murmur, letting her unzip your hoodie.
She nods, pulling your tanktop down.
"Wanna talk about it?"
"No," she grunts back. Her body falls forward with her face falling directly into your tits, "This will fix me."
You laugh, "Talking about it will also fix you."
Samira groans. You can practically feel her eyes roll on your chest, "My day was shit cause of Robby and I don't wanna associate him with your boobs."
That one wallsit trend for couples to see how long they can hold their partner up with young jack trying to impress cougar and get her in his lap
i don't acc know what trend you're talking about but i did see a tik tok about an attending who made his residents do wall sits before a shift (for somereason idk) and i've been wanting to write that.
"Jack are you sure you should do this?" you ask quietly with a frown, "No one is going to judge you if you don't compete."
Jack wasn't ashamed of his limb difference, but it wasn't necessarily something he spoke freely about to his coworkers. He'd lost his leg when he was 20. After he'd recuperated, he pivoted into medicine instead.
"Relax would you," returning your low tone with a grin, "Wall sits are very good for BTK amputees. Gonna rinse these guys out of their money."
It was Shen's idea. On a rare slow night he'd proposed a wall sit competition. And since the outcome would certainly be less catastrophic than his other proposal of janitor cart relay racing, you let him have his fun.
And so, the residents and med students line up against the wall, all eager to win yours and Shen's grand prize of a $100 virtual gift card to a store or restaurant of their choosing.
You shake your head with a smile. Surprisingly, Langdon falls first, mumbling something about leg day before sulking in the corner. The next one to go is Javadi. Her legs shake with exertion before dropping to the ground. She stands with a smile, accepting your hand to go sit next to Langdon.
3 remain - Ellis, Jack, and Santos. Though, you try desperately to keep your eyes off Jack. Thank god he's wearing full length scrub pants because if you saw his muscles rippling as the hold his body up, you'd almost certainly end up meeting with HR.
Santos legs start to quiver, but Ellis and Jack are steady.
"Doing okay over there?" Ellis teases, "Need a break."
"Shut up," Santos mutters, "Disqualify her for trying to distract me."
"Just don't get distracted by her," Shen giggles.
Eventually, Santos falters, crashing to the floors as her knees give up. She groans, ignoring your extended hand and joining her fellow "losers" (her words).
The showdown between Jack and Ellis lasts much longer than you anticipated until-
"C'mon man," Elllis groans as she pulls herself up from the floor, "You don't even look like you're gonna break a sweat."
"Oh yeah I should have mentioned," Jack says, still comfortabely seated against the wall, "Wall sits were an imperative part of my rehab - i try to do them everynight before bed."
*****
"That was so...sexy," you groan into Jack's mouth, pawing at the bottom of his shirt. You were getting very efficent at undressing him in the backseat of your car. The street behind his appartment building was dark and covered - perfect for climbing into his lap after your shifts together, "Gonna make you do that again. Just for me."
"Gotta get you upstairs in my appartment first," he grins, kissing your jaw.
"What so Santos can walk in on us?"
"I mean we could go to your place," you freeze, pulling away from him, "but you've got the girls, I know. But one of these days you gotta let me get you into a bed. My skills are limited here."
You roll your eyes, "uh huh. your skills are fine."
"Come upstairs," he looks up at you with wide eyes. He rubbs his hand soothingly along your thigh, "Let me show you a proper good time."
"You live with another one of my residents."
"Please, Garcia's over. You could walk out of my room naked and she wouldn't notice because she's probably having disgustingly loud sex," he shrugs, "It's time I returned the favour."
ali hazelwood's new audiobook about a vampire woman and an ER doctor that look suspiciously like mohabbot contains that very same ER doctor talking about how he's O Neg and how it "comes in handy during mass casualties"
If you remove Shawn hatosy and the pitt setting from the character jack abbot, what is left is the idea of a middle aged white man who is minimum 15 years senior to the young brown woman in a vulnerable position taking her virginity. Stripping it down to the studs for original fiction, wouldn't it read immensely creepy and icky? What does the society think of Leonard di Caprio or Brad Pitt or even Joshua Jackson for going out with women decades younger than them? Mohabbot beat the stereotypical creepiness only because of Shawn's restraint in his acting and because the actors were very cognizant of the power dynamics. All this to say, even if they scrub every inch of jack abbot and Samira Mohan out from the characters in the book, what is left is immensely creepy. And then you add on later in life virgin vulnerability on top of all of that? Creepy.
no you've really hit the nail on the head with this one - the books entire premise is that new samira is a virgin and so she asks her fucking boss to fuck her because he's the only one she trusts.
not only is that just weird as a concept (but hey it's fiction it doesn't have to be realistic and i admit that) but reducing their relationship to just employee-boss flattens what is so compelling about them.
half of mohabbot's dynamic hinges on the fact that we know that robby treats her like shit. he's overbearing, he's rude, he scrutinizers her every miniscule movement and we watch him do it for 10 episodes before jack comes in and is the complete opposite. in the original fic they get to fucking quick but that's fine because you have the general understanding of the characters and their dynamic from watching the show. however, this works because its fanfic and there's a solid chance this does not translate over as an original work.
i've started reading the fic and im around chapter 6 now (which is a little bit before the chapter with the stuff that she got called out for) and as i've been reading i've been thiniking about how this would do as a standalone and let me tell you - both jack and samira feel one dimensional (esp at the beginning of the story).
and this is not a knock on her writing skills because im sure if you did the same with any of my fics they would also feel that way because that is the nature of fanfiction, you need the source material in order to get the full picture of the new story being told. and having a foundation means that us fanfic writers get to do a little less work on creating a character and more on putting that character in situations.
this story is also heavily smut based (again not a knock, i also have stories that are porn without plot) - we get to fucking immediately. but, this book new book is not an erotica, it's a romance so i'm really not sure how she's planns on stuffing all the nuances of the characters into the book to make it not creepy as fuck.
also from what i've seen, in the original fic, samira's tamil heritage is very surface level in a way (she calls her mom amma and appa, she has a big desi family, etc. but in a way that anyone from any culture can kind of fit themselves into if that makes sense? )
like im so certain that samira is going to be reduced down to a virgin because she was a nerdy indian girl with a strict mom and this white man is going to be her night in shining scrubs for her to self insert on
fucking two roommates who swear they dont care about it and theres no feelings... but the quiet fucks in each of their rooms have gotten harder and louder... one keeps fingers in your mouth to keep you moaning, the other demands you reply to all his questions with "yes daddy"
one night, you're riding one on the couch, bra pulled off to the side, matching panties ripped on the floor, when the other comes home. you expect a reaction, but he just drops his things calmly. eventually, he does come over, drink in hand, and gropes a tit.
wait so does jack know that cougar is married or no?
icymi
okay okay i’ve been thinking about this and im gonna say no.
like i just think that the idea of readers marriage starting to crumble a little bit right around the time the cute new intern starts is just soooo fun (cliche for a reason)
he’s handsome and he’s got those pretty red curls and those cute freckles and that adorable crooked grin (plus he looks at you like you hung the moon and everyone needs an ego boost some time)
but she’s never worn her ring at work and she never mentions her husband but she does talk about her two kids all the time - hell the one time the nanny had to drop them off at the ED because of a family emergency him and javadi ended up being the ones keeping an eye on them.
there’s no pictures of him in her locker, her phone lock screen is just the kids so he thinks dad either walked out or died and he’s ready to help her forget that pain.
on the other hand, reader fully thinks he knows because she’s not hiding her husband or anything. anyone else whose been working in the ed longer than jacks been there knows so she thinks he just wants to live out a fantasy and bag an older woman.
little does she know jack’s been planning their first proper date since he first brought you coffee
So to sum it up, she's done racist shit and yeah she's weirdly side stepped a real apology and yeah she blocked everyone who tried to approach her about it and yeah she's now monetizing the very same work including keeping the protagonist brown just to maximize the "white woman author profits off brown culture/characters" bit on the heels of being unrepentant about her previous "errors"
Emily Adama devoted to filling up the entire racist white author bingo card
okay so i will admit most of this went down on pitt twitter and i only lurk there i don't really tweet or anything but this lovely post by @hatosyscurls details what happened
basically this white author wrote a stereotypical latina character (jack's dead wife) and when she was called out for it blocked (and potentially harassed people according to other users here and here - open the threads)
i never talked to emily i don't know what kind of person she is in real life, but it seems like this is a classic case of a person showing problematic behaviour (racially biased writing) and rather than reflecting and correcting, instead ignored the problem. and when that didn’t solve anything it just erased and deflected instead of doing the work to unpack her bias.
i never acc read the fic when it was being published on ao3 but now that it's a book and knowing her past with stereotypes i want to read it as a desi woman to see how she writes samira because lord knows i have very low hopes (i get samira being a virgin is the whole point™️ of the story but it really feels like we're going to get some bad racial stereotypes about nerdy indian women or some shit)
(the stuff below this is going more into a personal rant about the publishing industry so feel free to ignore)
the romance industry is so fucking annoying these days. i like romance books and yet like80% of the shit posted post 2020 is just fanfic slop (obviously i am not shitting on fanfic lets be so explicitly clear rn) - stories that were good as fanfiction because they were fanfiction but once you try to sever the original story it doesn't stand alone.
like this is how the book is marketed from emily's own instagram/website
samira to AMARA
it's like she picked the first vaguely brown name and went "good enough"
this is literally mohabbot - not vaugley mohabbot, not "mohabbot but with a twist" just mohabbot
doctors
age gap
army vet
workaholics doctors - couldn't even make them veterinarians to give some distance
still not sure if this is official book art or if she just reposted mohabbot fan art and then got told by her team to take it down but this was on her website for a while

it tracks that the first author to financially benefit from a mohabbot fic being trad pubbed is a white lady whose response to receiving criticism for her racist depiction of a brown woman character was to block everyone and then post a weirdly apology-free apology statement
