One or two things that’ve happened over the last day or two have completely sucked out my will to write atm, so… I dunno when I’ll be working on things here or anywhere. It could be tonight. It could be tomorrow. It could be a week from now. So, if y’all don’t see anything from me, that’s why.

SEATED AT THE piano, blue gaze glued to the sheets of music before her, Victoria relished the small amount of time she had to let her fingers glide over the keys, attempting to better her music. Eyes lifting, though her hands did not pause, as Albert entered, her lips curled into a soft smile. Chin tipping to indicate for him to join her, she paused at the coda, fingers remaining on the keys as she watched him silently for a moment. Then...
❝ YOU FINISHED ALREADY? I thought you had quite a bit more to do... ❞

WITH THE FIRST warm day of spring, the very first of the season, the young queen took full advantage of her walk, allowing her entourage to fall a little behind as she ducked through and around her garden with the exuberance of the young woman she was. Soon enough, she would have meetings and more papers to read, but now, she felt a little free.

EYES SHUTTING TIGHTLY as she listened to her mother and Lehzen quietly argue behind her, Victoria allowed herself a soft sigh. Once, she told herself that on her eighteenth birthday she would be free of the suffocation that her life brought, a constant belittling that she was so desperate to escape. However, her birthday came and went with nary an alteration in her circumstances. Even this trip to America, her first ever beyond the British Isles, boded no additional freedom for the young woman, just a terribly tantalizing glimpse of the world beyond before being dragged back.
ALL OF THIS shrieking through her mind, her blue gaze suddenly snapped open and she BOLTED, disappearing around a corner before her mother and governess could notice, their now agreeing voices demanding her return. Skirt riding up as she scurried, she quickly found herself a little lost, but if she was, surely anyone chasing would be so as well. But, she would not take a chance on that, determined to grasp a few minutes on her own. Spotting an open door, hatch? she wouldn’t know, she darted inside, closing it with all urgency.
TURNING TO CATCH her breath, leaning against the door, her eyes widened when she spotted the officer, a finger snapping up to stop any words that might spill from him. ❝ If you- you speak a word of this, I will personally shove you into- into the Channel! ❞

“Now, what was so important that you must see me, Miss...?” The queen was unaware of the woman’s name or of her purpose in her office but she had to assume it was important for her to be there. Beyond that, any idea the woman could be there without vetting did not even cross her mind. After all, who would dare try to break through her security?

FINGERS QUICKLY SIFTING through the papers spread over her desk, sorted from the marron leather box cast aside on a chair, blue eyes did not lift from the words until Alexei entered. Then, in a flurry of fabric and a scrape of a chair against carpet, she stood with a soft smile. By far, she need not do so, but her cousin was not someone she would stay seated for. ❝ Not that I am not gratified to see you, Alex, but as you can see... ❞ A hand gestured to her many, many documents.

Albert couldn’t have been more surprised (and slightly annoyed) that she had asked him to join him on the rest of the tour. He cleared his throat and he accepted and then said goodbye to the other members of the team as he rolled down his sleeves and put on the jacket that he had worn especially for the day. Not that it seemed to have impressed the Queen or anything.
And he knew that this was probably because he had spoken out of turn to her but he’d never been on to shy away from his thoughts. Just because someone was born into privileged it didn’t mean that they had to live a life behind rose-tinted glasses. At least he wasn’t a British citizen or else he probably would have been drawn and quartered like in the old days. Still, he knew he would get some form of discipline after his remark.
He walked alongside the group, around the back, as the party continued en route to the next (and hopefully last) building.
FOR A FEW minutes, she did not attempt to speak with Albert ( as she had since learned his name ). Instead, she allowed him to stew in whatever he felt about being asked along, likely that she would take him to task for his words. Not that she would not, but she was planning on some sort of retribution. However, about halfway to their next stop, she whispered into someone’s ear and they walked back through the little crowd.
ONCE THE MAN was by her side, she left yet another beat of silence before her lips parted. ❝ I take it that you were not aware that I speak German as well as I speak English. ❞ It was not phrased as a question but it was clear, despite her gaze remaining forward, that she expected to be answered.

“Yes, but you’ll be in the WRAFs and I’d like to be with you,” Lilibet chuckled. Though the decision had only been made moments ago, the princess’ mind was set. Following Victoria into service was what her future held; a choice hastily thrown together due to a summer spent indoors and admiration for her brave cousin. Elizabeth poked her head above the back of the armchair to spot Victoria with a grin. “Whether papa likes it or not.”
Much to her cousin’s credit, the week had moved along rather predictably: both king and queen were not particularly thrilled with their niece’s involvement in wartime efforts. At least not while things with this war were so gruesome and ugly. It was late that evening when Elizabeth arrived to Victoria’s guest room. Letting her temple rest against the doorframe, she watched the woman finish her nightly routine. “I’m assuming you haven’t changed your mind? Papa was on a phone call to your mother for nearly an hour.“
Lips curled up into a fond smile at her cousin’s words, Victoria setting down her cup before leaning over the back of the armchair to press a kiss to Lilibet’s hair, warmed to her very heart. “And you will be, my dear, if it comes to that.” Was it not the largest shame that she felt more loved by this girl than her mother? Even though the crown was a burden she would hardly wish upon anyone, Elizabeth would wear it well one day. “Let us hope your confidence is warranted.”
Of course, no one was either thrilled in general or pleased that she had moved on joining without requesting permission, but that never exactly worked before. And nothing truly intimidated her about what she was stepping into. She was certain she had no idea how difficult it would be, but she was not intimidated. Smiling over her shoulder at Lilibet, she gestured for her cousin to join her. “He has not forbidden me from joining, so no. As adamant as ever.”

When news had come to him that his niece had put her name down to join the WRAFs, panicked officials had spent a good hour with the King trying to impress upon him how dangerous the whole idea might be. It had not left him in such a tolerable mood, but he still called in his niece to speak with her about the whole thing.
“I don’t think you —realise how much –trouble you are about to –get me into with your –mother.” He protested as he set his latest cigarette down on the side of an ash tray, glancing to her before nodding for her to take a seat opposite him at his desk.
Knowing it was only a matter of time before she was summoned by her uncle, Victoria was not at all surprised to receive the call. Nervous that she’d judged wrong and would be forbidden from joining, yes, but surprised, no. But, nevertheless, she attempted to display confidence she did not exactly have as she sat across from him.
“You will not be in trouble with Mamma if you forbid me.” It was a dangerous thing to place in her uncle’s head, but she was completely certain it had been done plenty enough already that her suggesting that course of action would not harm her cause. “But if you do, I will only continue to try with something else.”
Since the last one didn’t work out too well, consider this a starter call.

The princess’ cheeks turned a bright shade of crimson. “Oh, it’s just letters. We don’t really even say all that much. I tell him about my day and how bored I am as of late. He tells me about school and training for the Royal Navy. I don’t know why I brought it up.”
Elizabeth’s eyes followed her cousin who moved idly about the room. On the table before her, a cup of tea was beginning to cold. Though there was a sense of something with the Danish prince, Lilibet felt almost foolish for bringing it up after Victoria’s announcement. Beautiful, intelligent, witty Victoria who was always up for the challenge. Who (the entire extended family should’ve known) was always destined for more than polite table manners. “When I’m old enough, perhaps you could help me join the WRAFS too. Though I do hope the war is done by then…”
Blue gaze dancing as Lilibet’s cheeks deepened in shade, Victoria could not help but wonder just how nothing it could be. After all, the blush spoke of at least a crush on her little cousin’s part, something the young woman would not be loath to see. It would be a breath of normality for the girl to have a crush at her age, though… considering the track record of their type, it could turn into something more. “It’s an exciting thing. I would not mind having a pen pal in the services. Especially one as handsome as your Philip.” Now she teased, but all in good fun.
A slender brow raised at her cousin’s suggestion, the following spreading smile unable to hide her excitement. “If the war lasts that long, it would be my pleasure to help you, Lilibet. Though, I expect Uncle will rather you find a service with postings closer to him than the WRAFs. I am attempting to escape Mamma, but you have no need of that.”
