I love Dimigard but in a very specific way that I don't always see represented. I love them as each other's first love, a childhood crush they can't quite let go of. For Dimitri especially who remembers who she is, whenever he sees her at Garreg Mach he can't help the little flutter of an old and tiny flame of a crush in his stomach but she doesn't seem to reciprocate so he swallows it down and just greets her as a fellow future ruler. And when he sees her unmasked as the flame emperor the betrayal in his gut is so strong. And as he wallows in his hate post timeskip he tries to burn away all his happy memories of her with the memory of the flames at Duscur but still sometimes he feels a twinge of love and it makes him sick. And when he sees her again and holds out his hand he wishes so desperately that the girl he loved since he was a little boy was still in there and would reach back even if she told him with her own mouth that that girl was dead.

And for Edelgard who only realizes that her first love that she thinks about far often than she wishes is Dimitri when he calls her El, all of the emotions come at once. Especially in CF when she kills him as he spits hatred at her but calls her by the name she so desperately wants to hear. As he dies, she wants to give in to love and grief inside of her and hold him and weep but she can't do that in front of all her soldiers and friends, her subordinates and subjects. Even then she can't help but shed a few tears for him in front of Hubert and her teacher and shatter under the weight of so many emotions at once when she is finally alone.

Edelgard: No, no, it just sounded like you said Edelgard!

Dimitri: Flame Emperor.

Dimitri: Hey everybody, look! It’s the Flame Emperor!
