When The Sky Turned Black
AN: Hello all! And welcome to my first Twisters Fic. I'm so excited to share my writing online again and I hope you find this story very intriguing and enjoyable. A bit of a heads up, I'm new to this playlist selection so if you do finish any songs or don't get to finish them, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next set of songs when you get to them. I wanted to give options in case some read slower than others. So with that in mind, happy reading and let's dive right into the first chapter! āŗļø
**Begin listening to playlist, starting off with Home - Philip Phillips**
May 31st, 2013, El Reno, Oklahoma
āNobody ever thinks itāll be the last time ā not on a day like this.ā
The air in El Reno, Oklahoma, had its own flair to it. In the winter, it was cold and crisp. However, in the spring and summer, it carried the familiar, yet still heavy, stillness. The one that came before spring storms. It was a quiet pressure that could sit on your skin like the whisper of something waiting to happen.
Inside the Owensā household, that stillness felt sacred. Too sacred in fact. The late afternoon sun flooded through the kitchen windows of the old yet elegant farmhouse. Honey-colored light scattered about, splashing across the wooden oak table where Tyler, Nikki, and little Lily sat for an early dinner. The whirring of the ceiling fan filled the silences between small laughter and the clanking of forks against plates.
Three-year-old Lily began to babble happily, pressing her green peas into the mountain of bright yellow mac and cheese. It was a quick and easy meal, something the family made when Nikki had night shifts to tend to and Tyler would be out for late storm chasing duties.
āDaddy, peas go in the Mac and cheese! See?ā The happy toddler presented her masterpiece to her parents.
Tyler smiled, letting out a soft laugh as he watched his daughter work her fingers in small, precise moves. āSo our little girl is a chef now, hm? Guess Iāve been doing it wrong then.ā
Nikki smirked from across the table, her dark brown hair pulled into a ponytail. āThatās because you eat like a raccoon,ā she said, taking a sip of her iced tea, āYou could learn a thing or two from her.ā
The playful banter came very easily, a natural rhythm that the two had perfected despite being married for only 3 years. 3 years, yet already filled with so much chaos and love. Tyler leaned back in his seat, feeling the rare calm of being still, being at home ā not on the road, not chasing storms, not glued to a live feed or radar with oranges, reds, purples, or heck, even a hail or debris core with adrenaline flooding through his veins. Just here, with his beautiful wife and daughter.
For a while, it almost felt like peace.
**Begin listening to No Rest For the Wicked - Lykke Li. Then listen to Running With The Wolves - AURORA**
On the countertop, the television was flicked to News9, a TV news channel in Oklahoma City. The broadcast murmured through the background noise of the familyās laughter, breaking into the regular programming schedule with severe weather updates. On the screen, the local meteorologist, while having a map of Oklahoma displayed right behind him with swirling patterns of reds and yellows, spoke with a careful blend of calm and warning only weather people could seem to master, yet all too familiar for Tyler.
āWeāre keeping an eye on a line of storms developing west of I-40. Conditions look unstable ā elevated CAPE values, high dew points, and a strong jet stream overhead. Could see some severe development later this evening.ā
Nikki barely looked up from her plate. She softly rolled her eyes. āTheyāre always overreacting. Just a hailstorm and a thunderclap or two. Weāre all too familiar with this by now.ā
However, Tyler was seeing things differently. The radar on the TV screen further collaborated with his thoughts completely. He was on prime time focus, eyes narrowing thoroughly as if he could sense a bigger storm was brewing. Despite being a newly self-made storm chaser with a well-known amount of followers, yet being able to read a radar, he saw those blobs of reds, oranges, and yellows as more than just colors. He saw them as pulse and motion. As power. He could see the instability within, rotation, yet subtle near the dry line. It was these little signs that made his stomach stir with something between excitement and unease. Yet that uneasiness felt superior to the excitement.
āYeah,ā he said quietly, trying to keep his tone balanced. āMaybe.ā
Nikki caught that usual tone. She knew what it meant.
āTy,ā she started, her voice as gentle as rain, āYouāre not thinking about heading out tonight, are you? Itās your day off.ā
He shrugged, his eyes not fully meeting hers. āJust going to keep tabs on āem. If something does come close, Iāll intercept. Nothing crazy though.ā
Nikki playfully rolled her eyes. āNothing crazy,ā she repeated, giving him the usual look she did when she knew deep down he meant otherwise. āThe last time you said that, you ended up live-streaming a wedge tornado that was only a half mile away! And that was only just a few days ago.ā
She was right. Back on the 20th, parts of Moore had suffered from a catastrophic EF5 tornado. The damage was so devastating that there was still a lot of cleanup going on, and everyone could only hope that nothing else major, or sinister in this case, would tear down from the sky again. At least for a while.
That was different,ā he said, softly smiling despite the real cause of going out there that day. āThat one was worth it.ā
She let out a soft laugh. āYouāre impossible, Tyler Owens. But I shouldnāt be surprised nonetheless. You do good work. All of you. And Iām proud to have a husband thatās willing to go out there and save lives with warning ahead of time.ā
He smiled, taking hold of her hand as his fingers brushed against hers. āYou love that about me.ā
āI tolerate that about you,ā she corrected, though her hand lingered against his, her French manicured nails brushing against his calloused hand.
Just then, Lily banged her spoon against her plate, demanding their attention. āMama! Daddy! I made a pea mountain!ā
Nikki and Tyler couldnāt help but burst into a moment of laughter. Sweet and simple. Tyler playfully ruffled their toddlerās hair while Nikki leaned against him, her hand resting on his chest and her head resting on his shoulder. Outside, a dog barked somewhere within the neighborhood. A trainās whistle echoed faintly from the tracks that cut through the town. The grassy plains and wheat fields blew against the rather calm wind. However, against the windows, the air pressed a little heavier. But no one noticed. Not yet, at least.

Later, while Tyler loaded his camera gear into his truck, Nikki stood in the bathroom, buttoning up her flight paramedic suit. The patch on her sleeve ā Oklahoma LifeFlight ā caught the last streaks of sunlight. She had worn this uniform through countless emergency response calls, whether they were at daytime or at night: highway pileups, farm accidents, tornado aftermath, and recovery. However, her work was always meaningful. She loved flying. She loved saving lives.
But that didnāt mean she didnāt have quiet ache feels whenever she left home ā Lilyās laughter fading behind her, and Tylerās truck rumbling off into the storms ahead.
Two people chasing danger in different ways.
She looked out toward the west, where the sky was already bruising ā clouds stacked in hazy layers while slowly turning darker and sinister, distant thunder rumbling beneath them. She exhaled slowly. āLooks worse than they said it would be,ā she murmured.
Nikki then stole a glance of her reflection in the mirror ā tired eyes, chapped lips, a faint crease in her forehead from the endless night shifts and emergency calls she had been on with little to no rest. However, she managed a smile, just like always before her shift, a silent promise that she would be home again with her family. Little did she know that it was about to be broken by something deadly lurking in the shadowsā¦
When she came back into the kitchen, Tyler was already helping Lily pack up her nighttime bag as she would be spending the night at his Aunt Gloriaās place. The energetic toddler was babbling about arts and crafts, along with the usual āstorm boomsā, her hair moving about as she giggled. Nikki bent down, kissing her daughter on the forehead. As she did so, she could smell that fresh lemon verbena shampoo ā a sweet scent that made every goodbye harder than the last. For Tyler, though, it was her loving charisma and Lillieās of the valley scent on her skin that made it harder to bid her a temporary farewell.
āBe a good girl for Aunt Gloria tonight, promise?ā She said softly. āAnd no staying up past your bedtime.ā
āYes, mama,ā Lily said half solemnly and reluctantly, already distracted with her stuffed white cat. āAre you going to fly your big helicopter, Mama?ā
Nikki smiled. āYes, baby. But Iāll be back home just in time to see you wake up. And weāll all be together again. I promise.ā
However, Tylerās eyes met his wifeās. They both knew she might not be, and it was a terrifying thought. How right he would be, though in time.
Tyler led the way out to the front door of their farmhouse and onto the front porch. The last of the evening light was now stretching across the gravel driveway. The air felt different now ā heavier, alive with a low electric hum that made the hair on his arms rise. He could feel the subtle changes taking place within.
Nikki adjusted her paramedic bag and looked at him. āPromise me something.ā
He locked his gaze onto hers. āAnything.ā
Nikki gently caressed his cheek, her fingertips brushing against the little facial hairs he had. āIf it gets bad, donāt outdrive it. Donāt play the hero. Get underground. And if something happens to me, promise youāll take care of our baby girl. Do you understand me?ā
Tyler couldnāt help but feel the chills that went down his spine when she said those last few words of her prep talk. If something happens to me. Tyler couldnāt imagine what it would be like if his wife werenāt by his side. He couldnāt. They got through Moore just fine. They would get through this day. They had to. For it was a week after their Lily had just turned three. Things had to go smoothly. The worst that could happen was them responding to numerous calls related to the storms that would barrel through, right? Rightā¦?
āTyler!ā Nikki called out, her voice rising a bit.
Tyler instantly shook himself, focusing his attention back to his wife. He glanced at her as she spoke again.
āPromise? No outrunning a storm if it gets bad and youāll be there for our girl.ā
Tyler softly laughed, a soft smile crossing his lips. āI promise love. I promise.ā
She arched her brow. āYou never do.ā
He softly laughed again ā the easy, reckless laugh that she had fallen for just a few years ago. His expression softened. āYou have my word, Nik, I swear.ā
But he couldnāt hold back that sick feeling of something sinister about to happen. He wanted to keep everyone inside that night. Away from the danger, away from the howling winds, hail, rain and everything else that was on the severe weather list. He wanted Nikki to call out sick. So all three of them could snuggle. For once he was regretting going out there and chasing storms. But, Nikki needed to be at her job and he had to keep tabs on these cells in case they were up to no good.
Then, they kissed ā the kind that stretches time, quiet and lingering, full of things that couldāve been said yet werenāt. Lily giggled from the truck while Nikki smiled against his lips, whispering āSee you in the morning. I love you.ā
Tyler smiled, āI love you too.ā

She then turned around, making her way toward her car. She jumped into the driverās side, starting the engine. As she did so, the headlights lit up, glowing for a second before she pulled out of the driveway and out onto the street to head for El Reno. Tyler stood still as he watched her leave, the taste of her goodbye still warm on his lips. With a soft sigh, he then jumped into his truck, Lily still squealing as she played with her stuffed animals in the back seat. He smiled softly as he watched his daughter play, starting the engine before driving out of the driveway towards his Aunt Gloriaās house.
As Nikki continued the drive toward El Reno, she couldnāt help but find peace. At first in that case. However, as she looked toward the west, she couldnāt help but notice the sky that was once filled with the orange sun, was now stacked upon layers of dark gray to almost black bruises, with the first flickers of lightning dancing in between the layers of clouds.
She then flicked the radio on.
āāNational Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Canadian County and surrounding areas until 10 p.m. Residents are advised to remain alert as storms begin to form along the boundary near El Renoāā
Nikki sighed. Of course. She thought. Storm season always found them both, no matter what promises were made. But that was Oklahoma spring for you.
At the hospital, the smell of the nighttime air was a mixture of rain and jet fuel as everyone ensured that the helicopters were fueled up and ready to go when an emergency call would be issued.
As the LifeFlight crew finished up their preparations, there was the joking banter amongst colleagues that flooded the runway. Nikki forced a smile, but couldnāt shake off a silent, twisting and churning feeling that was slowly beginning to form in her stomach ā the kind of silent intuition that came from too many nights answering calls that started with static and ended in heartbreak.
Instead, she pushed it down and focused on her preparations. She had a job to do and she wasnāt going to let another regular storm system hinder her professional work. It was just in her head like all the other times.
Just another shift. Just another storm.
As Tyler pulled up to the driveway of Aunt Gloriaās house, the winds had picked up, snapping through the grassy plains around the farmhouse. Gloria met him out front, walking onto the front porch as he approached with Lily by his side. Her blonde hair was pinned up, wrinkles with worry etched deep into her face as she welcomed them inside.
āAre you chasing again?ā She asked, folding her arms.
Tyler softly sighed. āThese cells look like theyāre going to live. Not sure when they will die out. Forecasters say it is an all night event.ā
Gloria softly sighed. āTornado watch has been issued. Just heard it on the radio a little while ago. I hope Nikki will be okay and no tornadoes touch down.ā
Tyler sighed. āI know. But sheāll come home by morning. Sheās got to.ā
Gloria took a deep breath, focusing on the current events. There was no use in worrying about what would happen later. Right now, she had her nephewās daughter to look after.
āYouāll be careful, right?ā She asked
Tyler softly nodded. āYes. I will. Iām not going to outdrive a cell or anything if it gets tornadic.ā
āTy-ā
He softened. āGloria, I will. Iāll be careful. I canāt leave my family. They need me. I know when itās safe and when I have to move.ā
She sighed, relaxing just a bit. āYou always say that love. But storms donāt care how careful you are. They will take anything in their path with no mercy.ā
**Begin listening to Time - Hans Zimmer**
He hugged her anyway, kissed her cheek, and promised heād call. Meanwhile, Lily was already showing Gloria her stuffed animals and telling her about her pea mountain, oblivious to the heaviness in the air that was swarming around them. Tyler lingered just long enough to memorize her little voice echoing through the old house. He gave his daughter a kiss on her head before stepping back outside into the thickening air.
By now, the sky had darkened to a deep, unsettling gray. Even an almost black color. Lightning flickered off from the west again and thunder growled, as if the earth was getting ready to unleash its awaiting act of merciless destruction. Tyler climbed back into his truck, his camera rig sitting ready in the passenger seat, laptop with radar streaming live. The screen erupted in color ā a growing cluster just west of El Reno.
He then adjusted the frequency of his radio
Static
Then, the calm voice of it broke through.
āWeāve got a new cell forming just west of El Reno. Tight rotation has been indicated. There is possible development of tornadoes within this cell.ā
Tylerās pulse immediately quickened. The thrill ā the kind that never truly went away ā rose up again. He knew he shouldnāt feel it, especially when his wife was out there and would respond to the aftermath of these vicious monsters. But the pull was too strong. This was who he was. All of him.
He started the engine. The headlights caught the swirl of dust as he rushed off onto the road. As he did, the first drops of rain fell onto his windshield as if marking the opening notes of something vast and inevitable.
He stole a glance at a photo that was taped to his dashboard ā Nikki and Lily at the lake last summer, smiling under a tree on a sunny day. In that moment, he felt an old, conflicting ache: love and danger, both part of the same weather system.
Then, his radio crackled again.
āAll spotters, we've got an update: radar indicates a hook echo southwest of El Reno. Tornado warning is imminent.ā
Tyler gripped the wheel tighter, the wind now howling fiercely across the open plains.
He didnāt know that in just a few hours, the paths he and Nikki had taken ā separate yet always intertwined ā would cross again. But this time, the sky would be torn open.
And for now, he only knew the sound of his heartbeat and the growling of thunder calling him west.
AN: First chapter is done! I really hope you guys enjoyed it. Also please be patient as this is my first time in writing something. I haven't written for a while so I'm sorry if this isn't my best. Also, as I mentioned in the beginning, I'm new to creating playlists and if for some reason you do finish the songs or don't get to finish all of them, don't worry about it. I did this solely so everyone can enjoy my writing and since some people do read slower, I wanted to give them some more options. You are of course welcome to choose which songs may be to your liking of course. This is just recommended. I know I said this in the beginning but I figured I'd say it again in case you just happened to miss it and begin reading.
Anyway, that is my first chapter! Let me know what you guys thought about it. Reblogs and comments are appreciated along with feedback so I can improve and help make my stories more enjoyable and interactive.
See you next week for the second chapter of When The Sky Turned Black! āŗļø
