We have a complex rock here from the Franklin mine in New Jersey (itself named for Benjamin Franklin), where we have white Calcite and Willemite (see http://bit.ly/2GhhXnj), red Zincite (see http://bit.ly/2swKnHX) and black cubes and octahedra of Franklinite (see http://bit.ly/2CrkoS0) disseminated into the matrix amongst the other minerals. The rocks of the Franklin mines are probably skarns (see http://bit.ly/2siU5gK and http://bit.ly/2nJRB6G), that formed when granites intruded into (in this case) half billion year old Cambrian/Ordovician limestones and baked them in their mutual juices until all sorts of interesting contact metamorphic minerals form in zoned aureoles around the cooling intrusion.

Perforate reindeer lichen, Florida perforate cladonia

This fruticose is found in only four, disjunct regions of Florida--specifically in rosemary dominated, sand-scrub habitat. It grows in thick, many-branching cushions up to 6 cm tall, but is extremely prone to fragmentation due to the perforated thallus, so it is not uncommon to find much smaller, detached podetial branches scattered across the substrate. Threats to C. perforata include hurricanes, severe fire, invasive species, and human-led habitat disturbance, but as it is one of the the only 2 federally listed lichen species, it is being closely monitored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Or it was when they had funding and employees and you know, respect. So please folks, educate yourself on your local lichens, and help to protect them even when the powers that be won't!
