call me a crackpot conspiracy theorist but i dont think its a coincidence that right around the time the us and uk governments were going mask-off transphobic and directly instructing intelligence agencies to treat trans activists as "violent extremists" english speaking social media became flooded w discourse driving a wedge between two of the largest subcomminities of trans ppl, with tons of definitely super real accounts posting shit like "grrr im a trans man and i think whiney feminist trans women should shut their bitch mouths and get back in the kitchen" or "grrrrr i think we should kill all men ESPECIALLY trans men and btw im a totally real trans woman"
im not saying trans ppl are incapable of being transphobic. lots of ppl are assholes and some of those assholes happen to be trans. but if ur constantly focusing on trans ppl like theyre the main driving force of transphobia in society, while cis politicians are actively dismantling our rights, then ur acting like a fed and im gonna treat u like one. we need to stop fighting each other and start fighting together
‘The biggest rollback of disability rights in a generation’ – Charities respond to Supreme Court ruling
The uk Supreme Court has just done a major rollback on disability rights and is putting more disabled people in danger
My American and Canadian friends know that certain familiar chains have different, often dumber names in Australia, like Burger King is called Hungry Jack's, etc. So I've been doing this thing where I act like I don't know what Walmart is and and then I make up a name.
"You know, Walmart? It's like a giant retail chain?"
"Do you mean Wolly Dolly's?"
"What"
"Yeah they call it Wolly Dolly's because you spend your dollies, dollars, at Wolly's."
George Tiller was murdered 13 years ago today (May 31 2022)
People noting this anniversary reminding me again that it is such an insane failure of the pro-choice movement that we do not as a nation think of George Tiller as a civil rights hero and additionally a martyr at the level of MLK Jr. or a Kennedy. So, you know, do your part, etc.
“It is my fundamental philosophy that patients are emotionally, mentally, morally, spiritually and physically competent to struggle with complex health issues and come to decisions that are appropriate for them.” – George Tiller, MD

wayback machine version of the linked piece above, since the PRH website one seems to no longer work
One of my friends is apartment hunting and the saga thus far has been that they'll find the most perfect apartment, where due to some bullshit like being built in a converted attic the place has everything already lowered so as to be within their reach n shit --
but the only way to access the apartment will be up the universe's most fiendish, inaccessible staircase.
I do not know why landlords list shit like "accessible" and "lowered furniture" and whatever when there's no way for someone who uses a wheelchair to actually enter the fucking apartment.
Sorry for anything I may post over the next few weeks.
I bought a case of 28 white Monsters.
I'm afraid of what I'm becoming.
Self-diagnosis:
When the topic becomes about racism between children you very quickly realise children of colour aren't seen as children but as some other thing that should just take the abuse and then forgive the Real White Children because they didn't know better. They don't understand it but children of colour can and will very early in their youth.
What's the quote? "If the black child is old enough to experience racism, your white child is old enough to learn about it?"
tbh one of my frustrations with the way I'm disabled is that sometimes hallucinations are actually kind of funny, but in a way only you, the hallucinator, can actually 'get.' Other people find them scary and disconcerting, because we are in a culture that teaches that hallucinations are always scary and disconcerting, perhaps because they make the hallucinator violent and dangerous and perhaps because we are suffering "victims of our own mind." idk.
So I'm trying to explain to my friends, all of whom have some kind of disability goin on but who do not have psychotic conditions, that I have this One Recurring Hallucination
and OK, that hallucination is this really deep, authoritative baritone jazz lounge singer bloke voice saying, like an order, "you should pull your teeth out, pull your teeth out, use a wrench and pull your teeth out," and variations thereof. I have no idea where this comes from. I don't know if it's like, a movie or something I watched as a kid that has been in the back of my head forever, or what. I have some hallucinations and have even had delusions where, once I came "clear" again, I could place as "oh, that probably happened because I saw [movie] before I was sick," but this one is just sort of inexplicable to me.
So OK imagine. It's 5AM. I am half asleep. I am staggering out of bed and into the shower. Standing there, bleary-eyed, attempting to force myself into consciousness, and I hear this Giant Black Guy say "hey. pull your teeth out. with a wrench." And I'm like, I don't know, Disembodied Voice of a Louis Armstrong Soundalike, that seems like a dumb fucking idea.
And this is hilarious to me right. But y'know I tell the story and I look around at my friends and they're all like, frightened and concerned
We need to talk about how when you shut down or restrict discussions of mental health struggles on social media platforms in the name of "protecting mentally ill people" what you're really doing is excluding mentally ill people
maybe my cat is right. maybe eating plastic would fix me
Conversation I have just experienced in the wild:
A: Oh I have arachnophobia, and --
B: Well I like spiders. :/ They're living things just like your cat or dog.
A: No no, I have an actual phobia, as in an intense irrational fear, and --
B: So you kill animals because you're mentally ill? Like a sociopath??
And then I activated my heat vision and I sent burning chunks of B all over the fucking bus and brother? Everybody clapped. Not with adulation but with fear that they might be next.
god reading old feminist theory is wild because you'll be nodding along and then they break out the old "lesbians doing bdsm is misogyny because that's man stuff" chestnut
ladies is it patriarchy when women fuck each other
idk it's not like I'd ever argue that women can't be misogynists or enforce patriarchy on each other like obviously they can and do. but also it's soooo funny to sincerely try to argue that no woman would ever want to fingerblasted if not for the masculine scourge tainting her mind and tricking her into thinking penetration is good. lady I'm sorry but sometimes it hits.
The absolute best old school feminist thing I've ever seen was that homosexuality in men causes fascism and this is evidenced by how much Nazis hate women while revering men and masculinity
As in they thought the patriarchy was what makes men want to fuck each other and if men want to fuck each other hard enough they'll accidentally invent Nazism from first principles (hardcore gaynal sex)
… didn’t the nazis famously put gay people in concentration camps?
They sure did mate, but frustratingly ever since the 1930s there have been conspiracies that the Nazi movement was actually gay.
The whole thing is very complicated to explain because it would mostly involve dissecting overlapping layers of people who are ideologically committed to being wrong, but the core of it is that people have thought of the Nazis as really gay since the Nazis started to exist, due to the fact that their praise of hypermasculinity and hypermasculine aesthetics reflected homophobic expectations of the time.
Same kinda shit with the Proud Boys, right? The Proud Boys have faggy vibes but, crack open that nut? Oh! Not fans of The Gays. Some people do not look beyond the faggy vibes and assume they must be weird crazy gays. This was an especially easy conflation to fall for back when being gay was considered a mental disorder, and if you had one mental disorder you were kind of culturally expected to have all of them, because mental health was not well-understood in the 1930s-1970s.
Anyway, this belief has pervaded through pretty much all angles of the political spectrum, from the Christian far-right to antifascists, at various times and due less to clinical, impartial political thought and more due to politics reflecting the prejudices of its time.
There are feminist angles on it too, of course, mostly from before intersectional feminism was a concept, back when Black women were being told "not to confuse feminism with racial issues," lesbians were being called "men" and excluded from the movement, Christine Jorgensen was the devil come home, yada yada. Part of the feminist angle was that gay men hate women and that hating women enough will turn you into a gay man, on account of hating women lol. It's very, y'know, of the time of homosexuality being considered a mental disorder caused by inexplicable but surely evil social forces.
audism is the fact that in the US cops are only legally obligated to provide an interpreter after a Deaf person is detained. this results in many Deaf people being murdered by the state for not understanding instructions at things as simple as traffic stops.
many cops make no effort to use alternative communication with Deaf people even after we have identified ourselves as Deaf.
audism is also the fact that our signing is considered threatening and something that warrants murder. audism is the fact that our signing is labeled as gang signs and is used to justify murdering us. (and, for the record, actual gang signs also don't justify murder)
audism is the way Deaf people are accused of lying to "get out of things" when we identify ourselves as Deaf.... which is then used to deny us accommodations like interpreters or written communication.
audism is the fact that multiple Deaf people (mostly unhoused) have been murdered in my city alone in the last 5 years under the premises of "refusing to follow instructions" and "threatening hand gestures" and "gang signs." audism is the fact that Deaf people (and especially multiply marginalized Deaf people such as Black Deaf people) disproportionately experience police brutality even when it isn't lethal.
health isn't a virtue.
people still go around acting like they've done something good in order to be able bodied and healthy. that they worked for it, that it's due to their moral fibre or good upbringing or self control. they genuinely, on some level, believe that they are a good person solely based on the strength of their physical abilities. they will resist the fact that it is largely down to chance that they were able to maintain such health. whatever they think they've built from scratch, the building blocks were already handed to them. not because they're more worthy of it, just by luck. and they really think they're worth more based on that sheer luck. i've met disabled people worth a hundred of the healthiest ableds alive.
Ignoring luck is dumb, but claiming that health is entirely based on sheer luck is an extremely corrosive worldview. There are dozens of choices you make every day, every week, every month that contribute to your overall health and functioning. It's good to be healthy and it's good to make healthy choices and you do in fact have a lot of control over whether you are able bodied.
sounds like someone is mad you don't have a lot of control over whether you are able bodied
dude yeah just eat and lift your way out of cerebral palsy
every day, every week, every month, just make choices that contribute to not being born with cerebral palsy. it is good to be healthy and it's good to make healthy choices and you do in fact have a lot of control over whether you are born with cerebral palsy.
people who do not do this are in fact making a hostile choice to be born with cerebral palsy. and what should we do with people who make said choice? well... they ignored that it's good to be healthy and chose not to make healthy choices. you do in fact have a lot of control over whether you are able bodied.
"obviously i didn't mean people born with conditions"
every day, every week, every month, just make choices that contribute to your only water not being contaminated. it is good to be healthy and it is good to make choices and you do in fact have a lot of control over your water access.
people who do not do this are in fact making a hostile choice to drink contaminated water. and what should we do with people who make said choice? well... they ignored that it's good to be healthy and chose to drink contaminated water. you do in fact have a lot of control over whether you are able bodied
"obviously i didn't mean people in regions where their only water is contaminated"
every day, every week, every month, just make choices that contribute to not being in a random accident. it is good to be healthy and it's good to make healthy choice and you do in fact have a lot of control over random accidents.
people who do not make this choice are in fact making a hostile choice to be involved in random accidents. and what should we do with people who make said choice? well... they ignored that it's good to be healthy and chose to be involved in a random accident. you do in fact have a lot of control over whether you are able bodied
"obviously i didn't mean people involved in random accidents"
talking about stuff like prison reform or the SO registry really quickly makes you realize how many peoples political ideology boils down to "look, just tell me who the bad people are so I know who we should be killing."
