a loud & frankly dramatic gasp escapes his mouth, skipping away towards the nearby alleyway. a minute later, he hops out from the alley towards toga. ❛ toga, darling ! look at how adorable this cat is ! do you think the boss would let us keep them ? they could be a family pet ! ❜
HEADCANON: HIS MASKS.
he has a really hard time looking people in the eye, he always viewed the eyes as a window to the soul & he’s deathly afraid of what people could see through his eyes. maybe it was the years of bullying & abandonment that caused it, he’s unsure but he knows he can not make eye contact with people. not without something covering his face. he started to make masks when he was 13 years old.
it started as a coping mechanism, he would create masks that displayed his emotions so he could vent his frustrations onto a mask instead of himself. he loved wearing them around the house, despite how “creepy” his foster parents found it. he was never allowed to wear them outside, they didn’t want people thinking they had a weirdo for a son. they constantly commented about how “villainous” it made him look.
he didn’t mind.
he started to wear surgical masks, stating that he wanted to avoid getting sick, when really he just wanted to wear something out that he could hide his face behind. he’d wear sunglasses along with it, to really cover himself up. he stopped being comfortable without something covering his face around 15 years old.
when he became a magician, he wore his theatrical masks ( not the same ones he wears now ) they only covered the upper half of his face & everyone thought it was simply a costume choice, since he had a very fancy costume anyway. he ran with it, but really, it was the only way he was comfortable.
after he became a villain, he decided that he wanted to make his theatrical masks ( the beautiful ones he used to make as a child, the ones that his foster parents called “creepy” & “villainous” ) a part of his costume. along with a balaclava to cover his hair & neck, wanting to be completely covered. maybe they knew more than he thought that they did, he ended up exactly how they expected.
he tries not to think about that.
after joining the league of villains, he became slightly more comfortable with exposing his face. usually only around them, but even they are off limits at times, depending on how he feels. he never takes his balaclava off though, he still is not very comfortable with that. maybe in the future, he will be.
( additional notes: when he’s in his civilian clothes, he wears a surgical mask & sunglasses like he did when he was younger. he knows he’d get the police called on him if he was walking around with a theatrical mask on, so he uses that. )
