Rest in Power to the legendary Dick Gregory. “If all you can do is judge a person by their appearance—because you don’t have the spirit to judge someone from within—you’re in trouble.”
Jay-Z and Dick Gregory, photographed during Radio One’s "25th Anniversary Gala” at the JW Marriot in Washington, D.C. on August 18, 2006. Beyoncé was the headlining performer at the gala.
One of Hov’s favorite books is Gregory’s Nigger: An Autobiography: “I don’t know who turned me on to this autobiography, but his sense of humor and the hardships he went through stayed with me—especially the scene where he started running home from school. It led to his joining the track team, which led to a scholarship to college. Running opened up a whole world for him."
Back in 2013—when many Republicans were "outraged” at his and Beyoncé’s anniversary trip to Cuba—Gregory came to the couple’s defense, saying “it’s none of our business. White folk can go, why can’t they go? It’s their business. [The Republicans] are not the caretakers of Black folk. What makes people think they have the right to comment on Black people?”
