Hello. I was wondering if you could publish the links for chapters I to XI, because their links in dropbox are broken, thanks!
I just finished redesigning the entire theme! you can now find all the text right on the tumblr
I was wondering, who makes the beautiful graphics that accompanies the chapters and where do you find the films/videos that is used for settings?
That's the amazing and magical Vanz (aka tumblr user eammons)
I would love to hear more about Gein and Xavian, they're my favorites.
Sure!
Gien's spent his whole life in an extremely isolated culture. The Frosthills is similar geographically in many ways to modern day Greenland. His people are few and sparsely spread, they live by following herds of reindeer across the tundra landscape, or by traveling along the coast and hunting seals. They eat almost only meat, and they move so often their homes are very simple. They have limited power provided by small wind turbines and solar panels that are light enough to carry and easy enough to assemble at each new home. Gein spend his entirely life living more as a strong and valuable member of a community than a king. With so few people large domestic issues hardly arise, but he has the power to unite all tribes if he needs to. And with Yanna's country to the south continuously eyeing his borders and the untapped oil resources underneath who knows when that might become necessary.
Xavian's life has been pretty much the exact opposite until now. She's lived like a movie star - on the cover of at least one magazine every month, a fashion icon in Kakos who can't walk down the street without being trailed by photographers and journalists. Kakos is a sort of modern day Hong Kong and Las Vegas melded together. The land it's on is very similar to Japan, so close mountains force communities into pockets, and those pockets have grown very urban and dangerous. Law is treated very loosely in Kakos and corruption is pretty much their branding. She's lived a life of extreme comfort but also extreme objectification. Woman and sex are traded very loosely in her land, even her brother Max was raised in a brothel. She's been an object to look at all her life, and has had her mind shaped to treasure that, but she may begin to realize that life has more possibilities.
In what ways does Schoren communicate with others? Is there a kind of sign language or other means? He doesn't seem to contribute much to their conversations in chapter 9, and even then it's with his eyes/face/body language only so I'm curious now.
Schoren relies primarily on body language to communicate and uses no form of sign language beyond basic symbols most of us would be able to understand.
With the alliance he cares more about observing his peers and how they move through their lives than effecting politics. His country is very secure and secluded and, unlike many others, has moved with a natural pace and rhythm for many years, so there's not much need for him to direct actions like Godwin has to.
It's not that he doesn't want to be involved in politics, it's that Schoren feels the presence of fate in a way that is stronger and more real than anyone else realizes. He believes very strongly that the world has a path that it is meant to follow, and in that way he thinks things will take a natural course and his actions will have little effect in any ultimate outcome.
Thank you so much!
There's two main blogs at the moment that we'd strongly consider following if you want the full experience -
Divine Right (the central blog, mostly dealing with character-based, and fan-works related things)
Divine Right: The Novel (where chapter updates will be posted)
In addition, there's also this FAQ blog, where all questions will be directed and kept in a central location.
ALSO. If you check out the Divine Right Nations blog, it sort of acts as a blogroll for all of the country blogs, where you can learn more about each of the countries, conceptually (land, fashion, culture, etc)
what are your favorite relationships/character dynamics?
Ien/Talya for the same reason as Ronan/Brogan. How can I resist warrior siblings who are fiercely devoted to one another.
Eammon/Linnea/Linneaus/Delphine, because when I start thinking about sexuality and how it pertains to the characters overall (divine blood and all that), it gets a mess of confusing and also awesome specifically with these four. Sexuality is a much bigger topic that i need to write a thing on.
Max/Grier/Xavian because the ones who seem the most happy are the ones that hate their lives the most. Skeletons in closets and all that
Rei and Qai because even tho they hate each other almost as much as they love each other, it goes so much deeper than that.
Liukas and Yanna because what are gender roles.
Ien and Xoana because he’s a hottie and she could give a fuck and they’re so awkward.
do any of the countries have special holidays?
there’s one holiday that’s since been planned
and i did not think of this at all
(I CANT REMEMBER WHO SENT ME THIS IDEA BUT COME FORTH AND CLAIM CREDIT)
but basically its a holiday in the motherland where birthdays celebrate the mother that gave birth, not the person being born. there’s probably another, less popular holiday maybe celebrating like, being named or s/t.
but birthdays are basically mother’s day, celebrating the hours of labor to bring their kids into the world because if we’re being honest, what did the baby do besides being born. why do they get a special day instead of their mom. its all apart of the century long agenda of giving women credit where credit is due.
Have you given much thought to the music/dance/song of the various cultures? Like, are they influenced by the same real-world cultures that influence the countries and cultures, or do you have like, Scots-Celtic music in a place otherwise inspired by New Orleans?
YES.
Music is very important to both characters individual characters and as a mean to sort of illustrate certain plot points.
But as far as general cultures, there’s some that i’ve given specific thought to. And some that are still in the dark
A lot of the music is inspired by real-world cultures and because most, if not all of theses have at least 2 or more are inspired by them, I like to take some aspects of music from maybe 1 to sort of piece it all together.
For instance, Qai’s land is a mix of Scots-Celtic, dysatopian, Indian, and South Asian influences. And so thinking musically, i’d definitely like to go traditional Indian route. Formerly it was a culture of color and vibrance and ceremony, so the old traditions, including music, aren’t as prevalent anymore. Part of Qai’s story is about rediscovering it, including music. (There’s a cute scene where some kids teach him how to dance).
But then in the Motherland, instantly what comes to mind is your more grass roots/southern rock like The Black Keys and the Civil Wars. However, it is a generally happy culture that’s very celebratory and so the Icelandic Jonsi/Sigur Ros is always a fun choice. Its a culture based on nature and it’s music that makes you feel alive when you hear it.
Same with the Valley of Sin, with its dirty grungy feel, you instantly think either heavy death metal or power eastern euro techno or s/t
Obviously these bands and musicians don’t exist in this world, so i wanted to try and find some where you go, yes that’s what I’d hear if i were in this country.
When you think of melancholic chants in dead languages, think of Linneaus.
When you hear old German orchestras, think the Crown of the Sun
Navajo blessings, Ien and Talya
so on and so forth
what are the wedding ceremonies/traditions like for each country if you don't mind me askin?
EXCELLENT QUESTION.
mind you i dont have all of them planned out, but here’s a few that i have
The Isles of Light - Maribol/Alux - A water-based ceremony where both participants wear traditional sea-glass in waist-length water. there’s some chanting that has to be memorized, and the two sort of baptize each other, to both bless the ocean and their union
Throne of Blood - Godwin/Sarai - Held in a large cathedral like castle, it mirrors a catholic wedding, where the couple are knelt before the alter and are drapped under one blood-red cloak. their waists are tied together by the waist by a gold chord. For non-royal weddings, it may be just a scarf and rope. The couple must remain tied together all throughout the reception feast until the bedding
The Motherland - Eammon / Linnea They usually always coincide with the year end harvests. Sometimes communities will host multiple weddings in one day, or series of days in large harvest festivals. There’s a lot of dancing, always outside, a lot of colors. Like a fairy tale farmer’s wedding.
Can you tell more about Ronan, or Ronan and Taraesa? I'm in love with Taraesa and would love to know more about Ronan too!
I would love to talk about Ronan, especially now that I’ve developed him+his family a lot more.
