hershel’s words echo out in the air between them, but his attention is not truly fixed on them. his mind races in a thousand directions, as though pausing for even a moment would invite disaster in some form. he cannot afford rest, that would mean stopping, and stopping meant risking more lives. despite the gnawing fatigue that clung to him, he chose to ignore it as best he could, though the weariness clearly hadn’t escaped the notice of the other man.

his gaze shifts towards him, rick’s expression thoughtful as he weighs his response. he shakes his head in silent disagreement, letting out a long strained breath before finally speaking.

❛i … i don’t know if i can.❜ he confessed, his voice rougher than he had anticipated. ❛there’s always something happening, another problem that needs fixin’. we got people relying on that, that’s what matters right now.❜

lost in his own thoughts, klaus sat in one of the high backed armchairs with a glass of bourbon swirling in his hand. his solitude, however, was abruptly shattered and it comes as no surprise there, courtesy of his brother. he dismissed it as mere theatrics, the kind he had long since come to expect. but now with this interruption, it became evidently clear he’d be the one who’d have to listen and deal with it.

once the moment passed, he raised his gaze that shined with everything he wasn’t saying. a subtle grin tugged at the corners of his lips, his eyes betraying an amusement he made no attempt to conceal despite knowing that such a reaction would likely do little to ease the tension at hand.

he stands by the window, back half turned to rebekah, the late light filtering through the window and catching the sharp lines of his jaw. her words hang in the air, suffocating their surroundings and for a moment he says nothing. he inhales through his nose, as if keeping the anger from breaking through his ribs. the corner of his mouth curves … not quite a smile, but something bitter and restrained.

❛defended me?❜ he turns now and steps closer, each word punctuated by a measured pace across the room. ❛oh, dearest sister, you have only ever stood beside me when it suited you. so do not come here now and claim virtue, for we both know that would be a lie.❜

a subtle smirk curved upon his lips, the picture of confidence as he regarded her with deliberate leisure. there was no mistaking his intent, entirely doing this on purpose, needling her just enough to draw a reaction and judging by her expression and tone of voice, it seemed to have worked splendidly.

his laughter came low, rich with amusement as he lifted his brows, as though he hadn’t the slightest clue what she could be accusing him of. the glint of mischief in his eyes betrayed him, however, a quiet satisfaction in seeing her this way.

he tilted his head ever so slightly, still watching her, his tone light when he finally spoke. ❛i’m not doing anything, love. please do continue.❜

a flush of embarrassment warmed her cheeks, feeling every inch the clumsy fool who had brought this upon herself, now obliging this gentleman to help her out because she had failed to mind her step. she watched him with a sheepish half smile, then let her gaze drop to the wound and the material he had given her to press against it. when she did so, she bit back the urge to hiss as the pressure stung, though she tried her best to remain calm and track her breathing.

a quietness settled between them, thick enough to feel suffocating that she felt the need to say something. she lifted her eyes, the sharp edges of embarrassment softening by the gratitude. ❛thank you, i apologise for causing all this trouble.❜

a hush falls between them as she contemplates his question, a smile gracing her lips which was elicited from a hint of quiet amusement. her thoughts drift to the myriad things about herself she keeps tucked away, for someone like her … ever mindful of presenting the finest version of herself, intent on leaving only the best impression, there are depths to her that are unseen to those who only know her at a glance.

raising her eyes, she meets his gaze as a soft chuckle escapes her. ❛i suppose one thing few might guess is my rather spirited competitive nature. my family would likely claim fiercely so, or that i am not above doing anything secure a victory. I can neither confirm nor deny that, of course.❜

he swallowed, the taste of frustration and resentment gritty in his mouth. here we go again, he thought, the familiar knot tightening in his chest. it wasn’t just the words that shane spoke, it was the way he said them … a shadow of their past connection warping into whatever this was.

he wasn't pleading, more like a challenge that was drawing a line in the dirt between them in that moment. his mind was in overdrive, thinking about many things but mostly his own preservation. ❛i won’t ask you again.❜

a moment of silence hung between them as he watched her, a shake of his head accompanied by an unbidden chuckle. stubborn, he thought, and with it carried a trace of ironic amusement. after all they had endured, with their circumstances still so precariously uncertain, he believed his caution was justified.

the more he reflected, the more his mind conjured scenarios of trouble unwanted for them. was it his own stubbornness to withhold his trust? he didn’t believe so, though he suspected she would require more persuasion to see it his way. ❛you divin’ headfirst into the new, while I weigh the consequences of what another reckless choice will cost us.
