Over the past two-three weeks I have been working on a music visualizer that uses Processing and Minim library. This has been a difficult process for me and I can't believe that I have actually created a "working" result.

Here are some screen shots of my work, with the bottom right picture, being the most recent version.

Final Project

What is your goal? Why are you doing it? Is it challenging enough? Are you sure you can do it? What are the upper parameters of your goal? What is the least that you would be satisfied in accomplishing? How does this work demonstrate your creativity and/or critical thinking?

For my final project I hope to create a music visualizer that can be used with live music. It will be a simplified version of other visualizers in the sense that it will not react to music but can be altered by pressing various buttons which in turn create a different version of the visualizer.

I think this will test my knowledge of processing and will definitely be hard enough. I hope to use this project as a starting point for other endeavors and hopefully incorporate it into my DJ sets.

New Learning Is Needed

Professor Wesch brought up great points and I agree very strongly with his teaching ideals. I grew up in a house that was all about learning through experience. I mean experience through action and hands on activity. I attended an alternative elementary school, a catholic middle school and an independent high school. Out of the three places I learned most when I was given the opportunity to act out the subjects I was learning. I think that if schools were less rigid in class structure and practiced what Professor Wesch stated, kids would learn more because they would be having fun doing so. Learning should not be a static process in which regurgitation is the primary act.

I may not know who I am yet nor what the meaning of life is but I can tell you I am content in trying to find out what that is. I am a person who cares the process just as much as the final product. I believe that the process of some activity can teach you more about yourself than arriving at a final conclusion. People tend to care about finishing an assignment as soon as they can rather than trying to figure pout why the professor is giving you an assignment in the first place. Although I ask myself often why I am here at college and taking certain classes, I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and that wherever you are is exactly the place your supposed to be.

The Hood Internet Puts On A Show

This past Thursday the 16th of October, The Hood Internet, a mash up duo who specialize in hip/hop, alternative and indie music remixing, came to Whitman College to perform and kick off the weekend festivities. After attending the Hood Internet performance I was pleasantly surprised. The music mash-ups were entertaining and the transitions were fluid. Each one of the remixes had some popular vocal sample laid over a hard-hitting baseline. The two DJs seamlessly transitioned from each of their laptops and I didn’t notice any miss cues or off time fades. The songs made you want to dance if you liked it or not. The sound system was fantastic (the bass in particular) and the stage setup seemed to be a perfect venue. The lights were well lit for the audience but I thought the DJs were too spotlighted; maybe their preference but if it had been less bright I thought the vibe would have been more “club” like and fitting for their kind of musical talents.

However, the worst part of the show for myself was seeing the lack of attendance by the student population. The atmosphere was great with the people attending but the overall lack of numbers made the venue seem way too grand and I thought was disrespectful to the Hood Internet. I thought the music was great and exactly the kind of remixing of songs that could make a crowd content. But the lack of concertgoers subtracted from the Hood Internet’s capacity to put on an amazing show. This observation had nothing to do with The Hood Internet and completely with the apathetic nature of concert going at Whitman College. Music is not just an artist standing on stage, its the amalgamation of the crowd's audience with the artist to create a performative atmosphere. I understand everyone has different preferences but the showing at The Hood Internet's concert was lackluster and I thought if it had been larger the show would have been one for the ages.

Such an amazing artist and the light show is hands down one of the best I've seen.

Lessig Reponse

After watching Larry Lessig's Ted talk I was happy to know there are educated and well spoken people who are fighting against copyright legislation. I agree with his idea that the internet can revive our "vocal chords" through the act of sharing and mixing creativity with other artist. It is a great idea to establish some marketplace where artists can share work and conduct themselves without worrying about copyright laws.

In my opinion I think remixing is the most creative art form out there. It makes a person acknowledge the current work and then add or subtract and make it something completely new.

Lessig's last point regarding how we live life against the law was very eye opening for me. I know I torrent and download music in *irregular ways* but I never saw it as a lifestyle in which I was living against the mold of democracy and law.

It will be interesting to see how this dilemma concludes but until then I think it is vital to continue the art of remixing.

I Will Program if I Want

Response to Program or Be programmed:

After reading the first five chapters there are a few points that really hit home for me. I am the guy who when he opens his phone checks Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Vine. I do not do this to discover who commented on a picture I posted or see if my follower count increased. I check these sites because I now mainly use them to follow trends like music, news and film world. Because I do this so often (I am an Apple slave) I find myself needing time to disconnect. Ultimately, I find chapter one to be my favorite simply because it is such a true statement in my life. As he says it is important to turn off sometimes because it actually increases the effectiveness when we are "turned on" ( No sexual connotation intended :).

After reading a delight chapter one, I found myself at odds with chapter two. I do not believe that by " living in person" we always get closer to the local communities around us. I think when people are not on social media the general population of people are habitual and tend to stay with certain friend groups and do routine activities. I like the idea of being to reclaim power from the media's technological grasp on our lives but don't essentially believe that by living in person we become closer to each other. If anything using social media (live tweeting or vine sharing) with others close to you can better an experience.

Overall I have enjoyed Rushkoff's work and looking forward to finishing it this weekend.

Response To Nick Bilton

First off thanks professor for introducing me to this guy, After watching his Smart Content video I've been reading all the articles I can get my hands on.

I think what Nick presents in his talk is becoming an evident truth in the contemporary age. Social media is becoming more than just a relay system, its becoming the primary way in which we interact.

I fully endorse his idea that Multitasking is a thing. When people tell me I can't technically multitask I call bullshit. Like Nick says, people's brains are adapting to the new social media tools and I agree that it is for the better.

The next step of social media is to make it available to everyone and figure out some to keep an intimate connection.
