MY ROOTS TO MY WORK PLACE: LIFE AMIDST TRIBALS
I was born and bought up in remote villages and small towns of picturesque North East India, tribal Hamlets and indigenous know-how. I even have a Naga tribal name that I was christened with. I vividly remember, people running in and calling my Dad, a physician for emergencies across hill ranges to remote villages and he would be gone for long, only to bring back sacks full of local vegetables and country chicken as gesture for his untimely rescue. My roots were built strong and I felt, non-the less, tribal as I was fortunate to grow, play and learn with my indigenous peers. I was in small towns and often changing schools. But the deep-rooted rustic learning’s made a huge impact in my life. I completed my studies and started working in the corporate sector and after 8-9 years of monotony, I decided to quit. I came back to my native town and did a small stint in the education sector before my world unwrapped on me. A World called KISS. I felt I was back to my roots and amongst people that I relate with.
Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), home to children from tribal hamlets providing holistic education. KISS has been a learning and encompassing place. I joined KISS in 2011 and there were around 10,000 plus students at that time, One thing was sure, every day I was seeing smiling kids and happy faces, and that was unlike any work place. My first field experience came in the form of identifying students to enroll in KISS, from remote regions of Koraput. I was thrilled to be back in the lap of nature and stark realities of conditions prevailing, Education, Medical, and other basic amenities were a far cry. Naxalism Insurgency was on a high in those regions at that time and it was of risk to visit the remote villages, Young children often fell into this trap or were forcefully recruited. I just wanted every child that we saw to have access to basic rights. Education was Key and as Dr Achyuta Samanta (Founder KIIT & KISS) says “ No Child should be out of School”. We started counseling children to be a part of KISS. Initial reluctance was of apprehensions without knowing what to expect. We were able to counsel around 300 students and got them admitted in 2012 and most of them are pursuing higher studies today at KISS. The process continued and we have had more than 1500 students from the region getting admitted till date. This has helped curb Naxalism Insurgency in their region, which has been a bane for their community and the country as a whole. Today we receive more than 30,000 request for admissions, which indicates the acceptance by the tribal brethren as this being a model empowering their future generations.
KISS as a system is wholesome, It welcomes all innovations and try to incorporate it with our model. Be it Mother Tongue based Multilingual education that our youngest ones are taught in to English Access for secondary students. Access to Medical health facilities, Vocational training, Plethora of Sports and Infrastructure, Community based projects, Fellowships and Seminars, Advanced skill courses, News broadcast in tribal language. This system of education has opened up the limitations and boundaries for a child to give back to the society and a number of students are in Government, Corporate, Education, Military, Civil Society Organizations - becoming change agents in their society. KISS helps in nation-building. I am privileged to be a part of this institute and can smile each day while I return home knowing, I am amongst my Roots. Where Indigenous dreams are Bestowed Wings to Fly
As human beings, we all have dreams – some passionately pursued; some nipped in the bud; but mostly marginalized, due to lack of support and guidance. This led to a dream-project named KISS, a grooming ground that gifted capes and wings to the dreams of thousands of indigenous children, coming from tribal hinterland. At KISS Deemed to be University, all such dreams - like small rivulets, merge into one huge river - surge towards a sea of social realization and actualization. It is an institute, where multi-hued dreams meet and mingle, creating a colossal canvas to marvel at. KISS had a humble beginning in the year 1992-93, and went on to receive the University status in the year 2017. The Higher Education Wing of KISS has six innovative Schools with careful assortment of subjects focussing on tribal languages, natural sciences and tribal technology, social sciences, social sciences and administration and tribal resource management.KISS has been relentlessly working on Sustainable Development Goals since its inception and with prime focus on Goal 4 and Goal 5 - Quality Education and Gender Equality. Clubbing these goals generates a platform for empowerment of women. KISS has proved to be an epitome of women empowerment through research and follows the motto of“Education for All” in form and substance.
Language, culture, heritage, traditions, art, crafts, music, dance and vocational training are some of the facets of KISS. However, research and development, innovations are vital to the Higher Education Wing. Be it a project based on research, or existing students pursuing M.Phil and Ph.D, KISS has always been a torchbearer. Girls coming from tribal communities have broken the glass ceiling and have proved their mettle. They have created a niche for themselves by working on research topics connected to their tribes, culture, community, language, medicines, food, natural sciences, resources so on and so forth. Their topics are handpicked, keeping all the above factors in mind. KISS started enrolling scholars from the academic year 2013-14 till date KIIT and KISS has touched the lives of 112 girls by embracing them in M.Phil and Ph.D. programme. Keep aside the social concepts of getting girls married early, or utilizing them in household chores, or many more such in the list, KISS has succeeded in producing change agents in their communities. These girls have imbibed the ideology of Dr.AchyutaSamanta that 'Education is the third eye of a child,' both in letter and spirit. We hope for a better Sun in the coming academic session and look forward to welcome more girls for research into our fold and break the gender stigma. Presently, KISS is running an international project on inclusive education. The topic itself speaks volumes about the attention given to higher education and how girls are being empowered through research. As a part of their research journey, they have to publish research articles, and these girls choose to work on their tribes or districts, even for publishing articles in SCOPUS indexed journals, UGC Care journals. The University brings out a Journal of its own with ISSN number to conceive research culture and environment on campus. Waves of change and ripples are clearly visible and KISS expect to welcome more girls for research programmes in 2020-21 academic year and give them a platform to become change agents in their community and set more examples in the years to come.
