Thoughts on a particular scene/piece of sybolism from the finale.

TADC EPISODE 9/FINALE SPOILERS UNDER CUT

So. Jax's room hallway. We know that each door contains a scenario in which a current circus member has abstracted. We also know that each door contains a part of Jax that represents a specific aspect of her. The maid dress Jax is her internalized transmisogyny, the wide-eyed Jax is her dissociation and rejection of humanity, the bugs bunny Jax is her cartoon archtype coping mechanism.

So naturally, people have pieced together that the barricaded door is the scenario in which Pomni abstracts. However, a lot of those same people assume that must mean piano/"evil" Jax is meant to be in that door.

Just one problem.

Piano/"evil" Jax is, well, chained to the piano. And the scenario behind that door is specifically of pomni being gone.

So who behind that door were the other Jax's shouting at to shut up? Because someone in that room brang up enough of a presence to garner that violent a reaction after hearing "no girls allowed".

It's bow Jax. The Jax that got to exist and be feminine for all of ten seconds before being shoved down, locked up, and hidden away. The Jax who's existence made her shift her entire mannerisms to avoid ever letting see the light of day. The Jax that was shouted at to shut up and be invisible.

Jax had the door pull double duty and locked away the most vulnerable part of herself with the abstraction that would affect her the most.

I can't make it simpler than that.

More TADC Episode 9 discourse with HEAVY spoilers

A great example of "It's just a headcanon" is Ragatha being a lesbian, which is an interpetation I love. It enhances a lot of moments in the series for me, I think it makes sense for her character, but there are lots of equally or even more compelling explanations for the gayer things she does in the show, Gooseworx has never implied that Ragatha is queer when discussing it, and her character arc is satisfying and makes sense if you think she's straight.

Jax being a trans girl is very much not that. There were lots of very deliberate creative decisions that just don't make sense otherwise or would generally suck WITHOUT that context (the exchange with Zooble in Episode 7, the song choice of "Isn't She Lovely" in that final montage, and the Gangle dream are the biggest examples of that) and Gooseworx kept teasing something to do with Jax and femininity in countless tweets and Tumblr asks. Trying to watch the show while interpreting Jax as a man significantly dampens the viewing experience, you can tell this by how various people have reacted to Episode 9 and how they interpreted it to reach that reaction.

Lots of cis people have disagreed with the theory because they relate to Jax. That's... really silly. I'm trans and I relate to cis characters all the time! I'm white and I relate to PoC all the time! Good writing can make people of all stripes relate to a character no matter their identity. Other people have said that Jax being trans wasn't explicitly confirmed, so it has to be a headcanon. That's where I do get a little mean and think that they're not particularly media literate. As a rule, good media employs a healthy dose of symbolism, show-don't-tell, and subtext to communicate its themes, and you'll enjoy it more if you acknowledge that the author intended most or all of it.

At the bare minimum, Jax is a trans allegory and cautionary tale whose relationship with gender ties into the broader themes of the show, specifically finding your own meaning in a meaningless situation by connecting with others. More realistically, Jax could have turned to the camera and said "I am a repressed transgender woman" and it wouldn't have changed a damn thing about the show except to make the writing more boring.
