I do many things, one of which is writing! I mainly write poetry, but I may write some other material, and perhaps post it. Who knows? The opportunities are limitless, indeed. So very shockingly, that is the expanse of language itself, and what would we have without it? "After all, stone spires will never scrape skies, While Babel has crumbled, Our communication lost." Afternote of decency: I identify as both male and female, and go by the pronouns of "He/She/Her/Him". Though, in general, I do not mind being referred to in any way. (I'd die a million deaths just to know that you're thinking of me.)

What is it that you most enjoy about Keijo?

I love the relationships of the characters above all. Evidently, the author put a lot of heart into how characters such as Nozomi and Sayaka interact. As a person who believes in the beauty of kindness and compassion, even between rivals, the characters brought me much comfort.

I also adored the determinations of Nozomi, for example— the characters all have their separate dreams and objectives, even in wanting to be sufficient keijo players, and to witness them coming close to achieving these goals is so satisfying, and honestly sort of motivating. While reading, I found a greater drive to do the many things I aspired to do, which may sound silly as this is a fictional, yet those hardships and overcoming them are so infectious. Honestly, "Keijo!!!!!!!!" has to be among my favourite manga series; there is definitely no mistake here.

About "Best Girl"

Most of us, I am sure, have heard of the phrase before- "Best girl"- reiterated timelessly in online forums. Whether it is an animated character, an actress, or a manga persona, there seems to always be the next upstart defendant claiming that their opinions are correct- that her ownership of a character is undeniable, or that his opinion is the only one which matters... Or worse yet, those who fail to realise the division between the cartoons we consume and the reality of living. It is this frightening forum writer or faux-intellectual critic which the poem "Best Girl" aims to deride.

It is certainly up to personal interpretation of whether a fictional character is taking the wheel of the poem, with an entire dramatic monologue, or if spoken lines and thoughts are separated between observer and observed, how the dynamic plays out, or who is mocking the other, yet despite all this my intention was to create another feminist poem, albeit with a multitude of intertwining themes: academia, gender identity, failure, sex, or cultural unawareness; the list goes on. So, what were my inspirations?

The first thing that started to define the poem was the sense of gender identity, the desire to be a woman introduced with a cutting edge. Often, I have felt performative- as if my attempts to be feminine were cliché or too stereotypical, that I'm not a "real woman". Then came the sexual element of it- sissification and the feeling of being degraded for your approach to life; at this point, I knew I wanted to have the perspective of a dominatrix, or at least a justified yet domineering figure- the figure of sexual obsession yet also the bringer of humiliation, all the more intense yet informed. In addition, the structure was inspired by Midori's "Ezoshika Dance"- a harsh, almost unrelenting wall of abrasive lyricism and music broken by slight choruses of boastful, wanton reprieve: "Aesthetic, aseptic, I'm so ero". This, in itself, acted as the poem's volta towards either realisation or hardened disillusion, upping the ante of savagery.

In short, "Best Girl" is a reflection on these ways we consume media, how many of us immortalise the controversial as a revolting and untouchable medium, so much so that we ourselves become the perpetrators of our prejudices and egoism. Sure, it is ultimately up to the reader to decide what to make of the poem, but the message will resoundingly always be that accepting fiction for the art it is deserves no dogma. Whoever you may be, you have the right to your enjoyments, and no self-interested "Young"s or reviewers can tear that from you.

It's that feeling of having a brilliant poem line idea in your head, yet not knowing how to start your poem or what to make it detail. Nevertheless, the combination of these several, stark lines eventually creates substance, granted you give time to your natural thought processing.
