Two Lines Chapter Three
The OB wing of the hospital was different from the rest of the hospital. It was painted in a soft pink unlike the rest of the hospital's stark white walls. Nurses wore scrubs with cartoon ducklings and rabbits printed on them. There were piles and piles of magazines and pamphlets on side tables all over the waiting room. Someone had obviously done their best to make that wing feel detached from all the gloom that surrounded the rest of the hospital. Still, Jo didnât like it.
It felt like someone had taken all the corners of Grey-Sloan and worn them down into a family friendly, bite-sized, hazy version of itself. Normally, Jo didnât have to spend any time in the OB wing. She rarely left her office that she shared with Bailey. But now she was sitting in an uncomfortable, upholstered chair leaning her head against the wall of the waiting room.
âAre you nervous?â Alex asked giving her hand a squeeze. He smiled at her sensing his wife's unease. It seemed like Alex hadnât stopped smiling since Jo had told him she was pregnant a week ago.
Jo shook her head. âNot nervous, I just want to see this little guy.â. At six weeks along she wasnât showing yet so it looked a little awkward when Jo rested her hand on her stomach. Honestly, she was a little nervous. What if it was an ectopic or chemical pregnancy? The chances of that were slim to none but still, Jo liked to plan for the worst.
âLittle guy? Itâs more likely that weâre having a girl. Most chil-âŠâ Alex began
âNo weâre having a boy, I can tell,â Jo said. âItâs a motherly instinct.â She said decidedly. Her eyes tracked a surgical nurse who walked through the waiting room on her way to the fetal surgery ward. âWe should have gone somewhere else, everyoneâs going to know weâre pregnant before this appointment is even over.â
Secrets didnât stay secret very long at the hospital. When she was an intern, Jo didnât understand why Meredith called Grey-Sloan the ârumor millâ but after her ordeal with Alex and DeLuca, she understood. âWe canât go somewhere else. It would look like I didnât trust my own doctors.â He said. âPlus, no one ever listens to nurse Ruth anyways.â He stuck his nose up in a very accurate impression of the nurse.
Jo tapped her foot against the tile keeping with the beat of the off-brand pop music playing through the intercom. She just wanted to get it over with. She hated the waiting, the unease of it all. A woman in baby pink scrubs stepped into the waiting room. âDoctor Karev, weâre ready for you.â She said.
Jo gratefully rose from her seat, Alex's hand still in her own. She drug him through the aisles of chairs toward the door that lead back to the exam rooms. âRight this way,â The woman said. Jackie her name tag read. As they walked to the exam room Jo felt a wave of nausea wash over her and she couldnât tell if it was from her nerves or from her morning sickness. She stopped dead in her tracks and clambered for the trashcan that sat next to the door.
She collapsed to the floor and emptied the contents of her stomach into a trash can that was normally reserved for gloves and tongue depressors. Alex crouched beside her and pulled her hair back. She melted against the pressure of his hand that rested against her back. When she felt slightly better she stood up and faced the nurse. âSorry about that.â She apologized.
The nurse shrugged obviously unfazed by pregnant women and morning sickness. âIâll get you something to settle your stomach before your exam.â Jo smiled gratefully. They continued following her to their exam room.
Alex took her hand again and kissed the top of her head. âYou okay?â he asked his wife. Jo nodded.
Jackie opened the door to exam room 7 and ushered them in. She pulled open the doors of a cabinet that hung on a pale yellow wall, fished out a small, oval-shaped tablet, and gave it to Jo. âThis should help with the morning sickness for today.â She said. âDoctor Morgan should be in any minute.â She smiled.
âThank you!â Jo said as the door latched shut. Her entire body was full of excited energy. She was about to see her child for the first time, hear its heartbeat. That was an insane concept that she still hadnât really wrapped her mind around. When she turned around to face her husband he was simply standing there, smiling at her.
âWhat?â Jo asked raising an eyebrow. She sat on the exam table with her legs kicking in the air above the tiled floor.
Alex shook his head, âNothing.â He said. âI just⊠It feels weird being here, doesnât it?â Alex looked around at the room, a giant poster of storks carrying baby animals was on the wall across from him. âI still think that itâs a girl.â He said.
âNo way!â Jo protested. âFifty bucks says that weâre having a boy.â
Alex stared at her wide-eyed. âYou are not putting money on the sex of our child.â He laughed.
Jo grinned. âWe totally are!â The idea of betting on the sex of your child made Jo smile. It made the giant, slightly terrifying journey in front of them seem a little more approachable. They were definitely having a boy.
Deluca just cracking up cause Weber walked in on them and Meredith just being like no itâs not funny and lightly hitting him on the chest is adorable and she so needed someone who makes her laugh and who looks at her like sheâs the sun
What a buzzkill
Iâm still going to kiss you for a good long time

Thanks love! Iâve got MANY more chapters in the works. Look out for one tomorrow! (Hopefully)
Two Lines Chapter Two
Jo knew good and well that pregnancy tests give false positives all the time. She could have a chemical imbalance or the test could have been faulty. Pregnancy tests were sometimes wrong but blood tests, blood tests never were. When she had asked for Jane Doeâs labs to be put in an envelope the lab tech had given her a strange look but she needed to know.
Clutching the off white photo in her right hand she hooked her thumb under the seal. Before she had even realized what she was doing the paper was unfolded in her lab the envelope cast away on the floor. The anticipation was driving her insane, she hated not knowing. But something was keeping her from reading the results. What did she want to be on that paper? She wasnât really sure.
Taking a shaky, uneven breath Jo cast her eyes down towards the paper. She scanned over the lines of tests that she didnât care about right now until she found what she was searching for. About halfway down the page, her suspicions were confirmed. Pregnant, approximately four weeks.
She rubbed her thumb over that line over and over again. It was real it was very, very real. A giant smile spread across her face. She was pregnant. Jo was pregnant. She wanted to call Alex, tell him the news, about how their lives were just about to change. But how strange would it be to find out youâre a father over the phone? That was definitely news that should be delivered in person.
Rising from the edge of the bed, Jo looked around at her and Alexâs loft. When the two of them had been forced to install hardwood floors they had chosen whatever was cheapest and their kitchen table was a gift from Owen and Amelia. It was fine for two newlyweds with busy careers and the occasional friend crashing on their couch but it wasnât anywhere you could raise a child.
She pushed that idea out of her head. They had eight months to figure all that out. Eight long months to move out of the loft or at least fix it up. Eight months to decorate a nursery and buy baby clothes, and make a birthing plan, and do all the other terrifying, seemingly simple things that come with having a baby. Eight very short months.
Jo folded the piece of paper and set it down on her nightstand beside her acceptance letter to Mass Gen. Feeling her phone vibrate in her pocket Jo reached and read it. âOn my way with pizza. Iâll be home soon.â She read. Suddenly the palms of her hands got sweaty as she searched for a way to tell her husband the news.
She could do one of those cute Instagram type announcements. She could ask Meredith how she told Derek but Alex would be home in about ten minutes. If Alex wasnât bringing home pizza she could have made him a nice dinner and told him then. Maybe she could show him one of the five pregnancy tests that she had taken that day before she finally had the nerve to look at her labs. She could do a thousand things but none of them felt right. None of them felt like Jo and Alex.
So Jo just sat there on the couch facing the door counting down minutes until Alex got back. She really didnât like being alone with this secret, this life-changing secret. She wrung her hands anxiously and tapped her toes against the floor in an inconsistent rhythm. For the second time in two days she let a silence fall over her as she waited. And waited.
She nearly jumped from her seat when she heard her husband slide the door open balancing a box of pizza in one hand and a bottle of wine in the other. âHey Babe,â He greeted her. âMer gave me this, itâs some fancy brand that a patient gifted her. She thought you might like it.â He said.
Jo nearly laughed when he said that. Of course, Meredith said that. She knew Jo would need help telling him. Meredith knew Jo all too well. âWeâll have to try it later.â She said. âHow was your shift?â
Alex set the pizza box on the counter and flipped open the top. He grabbed a slice and folded it in half. âNo one died.â He said proudly as he stuffed the slice in his mouth. âThere was this little girl who came in today to see Amelia about a Glioma and she was adorable. She kept asking for hugs from all the nurses. You would have loved her.â
Jo dropped her paper plate on the counter, wrapped her arms around Alex, and kissed him. He softened as he realized what was going on and wrapped his arms around her too. âWhat was that for?â He asked as she pulled away.
She took a breath. âI... we⊠Iâm pregnant. Four weeks.â She said.
âPregnant?â He asked.
âPregnant,â She nodded.
He stared at her for a moment before pulling her into a hug, his eyes lit up and a smile spread across his face. Pregnant.
Two Lines Chapter One
Jo stared blankly at the pink plastic stick in her hand. Shut away behind a narrow bathroom stall, a test that Jo stole from the second floor supply closet, turned her entire world upside down.
Frozen, she stared at the pregnancy test that she held between both of her hands. Slowly she watched as the two little straight lines developed. Suddenly her breath caught in her throat and her body went completely numb. Tears welled in her eyes, although she wasn't exactly sure why. Were they happy tears? Was her life crumbling apart right in front of her eyes? Honestly, she didn't know.
The empty bathroom echoed as she unlocked the stall door as it swung open Jo was met with her own reflection in the mirror. She was a mess. Her hair was pulled back into a sloppy bun on the back of her head. She looked pale and sick which wasn't shocking considering just a few minutes ago she was hunched over the toilet. Mascara smudged under her eyes.
As she rubbed at the mascara under her eyes one name popped into her head, Meredith. Meredith always knew what to do or at least pretended like she did. She debated paging her but that seemed far too formal. What would Meredith think when she got paged to a bathroom and she doubted that Grey would respond to a text while she was with patients. So, as if she was on auto-pilot, Jo scrolled through her contacts and found Meredith Grey.
The phone rang about three times and Jo was met with her friend's slightly concerned voice. "Are you okay?" Was the first thing out of her mouth.
Jo was taken aback by her immediate concern. "Huh⊠er, yeah I'm fine. IâŠ" Her voice wavered for a moment. "Do you have a minute to talk?" She asked her friend when she regained her composure.
"Yeah, where are you?" Grey asked her. She could hear the shuffling of papers over the phone, probably from Meredith handing over charts to an intern or two by her side.
"Third-floor bathroom," Karev said. "Look if you're busy-"
"Hang on, I'm on my way." She said cutting her off. "Stay there." The phone went silent and Jo was faced with her reflection again. Guilt nagged at her stomach, why did Meredith's name come to her mind before her own husband? What would Alex think if he found her sobbing over her likely pregnancy?
After a few minutes of near silence, Meredith cautiously pushed open the bathroom door. "What's wrong? Is someone dead? Do we need to kill someone?" She asked.
How was the Meredith Grey standing in front of her the same person that drove Jo to tears intern year? Four years ago Meredith wouldn't give her the time of day if Jo had begged her but now she was dropping everything because of one slightly worried phone call.
"Jo, what's wrong?" She said grabbing Jo's attention again.
Jo closed her eyes and fished into her pocket producing a positive pregnancy test.
Grey nodded in realization, "Okay, I see." She said. "And how do we feel about this?" She asked.
"I don't know," She admitted. "I don't know." She mumbled again.
"Look, if you're elated, or unhappy, or pissed, or anything else, I am going to back you up." She promised. "I'll make you an appointment at OB, or Planned Parenthood, or even your therapist."
Jo leaned against the sink's counter, "I seriously don't know."
Meredith moved beside her, "You don't have to know. Not yet anyway." The silence settled back in but with someone else there the emptiness didn't feel so vast and heavy. She didn't push for Jo to talk about her feelings she just stood there beside her in the cold, empty bathroom.
"Terrified?"
"Yes," She said with realization, "Terrified."
Meredith nodded, "Motherhood is pretty terrifying. I didn't stop worrying about Bailey until he was born and then I started worrying all over again." She took friends hand. "It's terrifying but it's amazing, and rewarding too."
She felt part of the tension she had been holding in her shoulders melt away and she could breathe just a little easier than before. "Thank you, Mer," Jo said. "Just, will you do me a favor?" She asked her.
"Did I not just pass my appendectomy off to a resident so I could come and comfort you in the bathroom?" She half asked half laughed.
"Don't tell Alex about it. Not yet."
"Of course not. I won't do anything until you're ready." She promised. Jo let her head rest on her friend's shoulder much more at ease than she was just 20 minutes ago.
She just got happyâŠ
