"why is momma so bad at riding horses?" missy takes to a saddle like she was born on one. looking at willow a few stretches ahead, she appears like she might get bucked off any second. horse is skittish. willow is even more skittish. "don't she know they can tell when you're scared of 'em?"

⫘⫘  ♱  ⫘⫘       “  ‘mere  baby.  i  cut  up  some  peaches  for  the  both  of  us  to  share.  ”       kenny  doesn’t  think  himself  a  smart  man,  more  a  lucky  man  —  but  he  is  certainly  smart  enough  to  notice  when  his  baby’s  feeling  down.  @doehartd  ain’t  exactly  the  most  subtle  about  it,  though.  gets  that  from  her  daddy,  he  reckons.

 “  y’need  to  talk  ‘bout  it,  missy?  yer  face  is  all  screwed  up  like  you  ate  somethin’  nasty.  somethin’  got  you  down?  ”

her face is all scrunched up. even with the promise of peach slices, she can't seem to shake the gloom off her. little sigh, she stomps her feet toward him, eyes on the grass until she makes it all the way to papa's feet.

"buck didn't wanna play tea party with me. too busy following miss rosie around... and then when i asked anybody else-- they all had chores!"

˗ˏˋ ✮ ˎˊ˗      “ missy? missy! it’s not funny — come out! ”     did he do something to upset her? was she just playing and taking it too far? or worse… oh god, god — please don’t let it be “or worse”.

“ @doehartd ! mama’s been callin’ you! where the hell y’at? ” it's serious when buck swears. he never does that!

missy is up a tree. been sulking for a good couple hours now, hoping somebody would notice she'd been gone and come looking for her - nobody did! now that lil salem is finally calling out for her, she thinks -- no! she's not going to let him get off that easy after all.

there's a small huff. she folds her arms across her chest and huddles against the tree, pouting. silent.

⫘⫘ ♱ ⫘⫘ “ If that’s what you’d like, we can do that. ”

Kenny directs ‘lil’ Missy on how to clean up the spill, what to do with the broken glass and how to be careful — her and her brother are such great listeners when they want to be. Once the mess is clean and her hands are washed, he puts a gentle, comforting hand on her little shoulder.

“ I’ll take ya to my special flower garden, you can pick em from there, how about that? ”

once she's all cleaned up, her little pout has almost cleared up. there's still hint of one remaining, apprehensive of what her mother is going to say about the smashed cup and the last of the cherry jam going to waste. kenny's presence comforts her a little, but not really - she knows that if she gets in trouble for this, the punishment will be fair and willow never shouts. she's not going to get yelled at the way mrs cynthia yells when she isn't paying attention in school...

"i'd like that, papa. those flowers are real nice. she'll like 'em..."

⫘⫘ ♱ ⫘⫘ “ We don’t have to tell her anything. You do. ”

But he will be there for support. It’s important to teach her how to take responsibility, but he knows how scary it is, even if it’s just a cup, even if it’s just Willow she’s telling. He knows his wife, though — she may be upset but she will handle it with grace, won't she? Gentle and kind... he wishes he could have married her proper in a huge cathedral so God could see just how happy she makes him. Lord, she's the perfect woman.

“ It’s the right thing to do. She might be mad but she will understand. I’ll be there so you can hold my hand while you tell her. ”

"...okay daddy." but she is soooo unhappy about this decision. missy hops over the shattered glass and ceramics to get to kenny, so that he can show her what needs to be done. there's a lot of sticky substances everywhere, and lots of sharp thing she's liable to cut herself on without his careful guidance. "can we pick some flowers on the way? like a sorry present?"

⫘⫘ ♱ ⫘⫘ “ A’ight. That’s good. ”

He had always been worried he would have a temper like his father. He loved the man to pieces, but the rage he felt was as hot as the sun — unable to control all of that from bubbling up when Kenny or his sister did anything to frustrate him.

Once the initial frustration passes, though, it’s easy to be calm. In fact, if he were a worse parent he might cave and coddle. Give her what she wants and clean up the mess for her — it’s hard to stay mad at her when she’s got such a sweet look on her face like that.

“ I’ll show you how to clean up the glass, and when you’re done cleanin’, we are gonna go to mama and tell her 'bout her cup, a’ight? ”

"do we gotta tell mama?" she was reaaaally hoping they would just let her find out the cup was missing herself. that way, she might not get in so much trouble... she really liked that cup. dark blue, with stars all painted on the inside and outside. her 'cup of stars'. she'd miss it, for sure - but missy wouldn't be the one to break the sad, sad news.

her toes curl on the kitchen tile, she chews unhappily on her thumb. the taste of cherries doesn't feel right, any more. guilt has spoiled the sugar.

He stands in the kitchen doorway, leaning with a rather tight grip on the frame. his jaw is set, his eyes narrow — but he breathes. counts to ten. Lets his eyes shut as he takes a moment to center himself. He was a kid once too, he used to do shit way worse than this. Willow’s cup is in pieces on the floor, but it’s just a cup. He lets out a breath and opens his eyes again, this time his face is softer.

Kenny crosses his arms over his chest, leaning a shoulder against the door frame. “ You alright? Ain’t cut nowhere? ”

she counts in a similar fashion, not to calm down but to count down until he speaks. when daddy is quiet she really knows she's in trouble because he has to mind what he says - like both her parents always say, it's better to be calm before you speak, to make sure that nothing nasty comes out.

lil missy shakes her head. "n-no, the red stuff's all the cherry jam..."

“i’m — i’m real sorry, daddy… i didn’t mean to…” she damn well did, actually! but she is sorry to make him so cross. missy has been told time and time again not to mess around in the kitchen, trying to get at the treats mama keeps high up on the top shelf, and yet the moment the opportunity was right and miss rosie’s back was turned — she ran off and went and did it.

now, there’s jam all over the floor. and broken glass. and mama’s special tea-cup is in pieces. that was all accidental. she looks at @swallowrot all guilty and sad, hoping that frown on his face will fade into something softer soon.

“it wasn’t lil’ salem’s fault, so don’t trouble him none… i told him if he told on me i’d tell miss rosie ‘bout his crush on her… i was trying to clean it up before mama gets back from her quiet-time…”

˗ˏˋ ✮ ˎˊ˗      he knows what it will mean to get away with this, as much as he hates the idea of it — he’s gotta lie to get out oa serious grounding, that’s for sure. problem is ‘lil’ salem ain’t too good at lying since he hates the concept so much. 

he’ll figure it out. daddy promised a dance in a couple of days, he can’t be grounded for that! his life might as well be over if he misses it!

“ Yeah, all my peaches. promise. plums too if you want, just… don’t tell. ”     a grounding now means a possible missed opportunity to dance with one miss rosie brown. simply unacceptable!     “ please, please please pleeeeaaase don’t say anything. ”

missy isn't so precious about a fib or two - she runs circles around mrs cynthia and rosie all the time, spinning fable after fable - but lying to daddy is a whole 'nother story. he's her best friend (after salem!) and he knows just from looking at her when she's up to no good. her cheeks get all hot and her eyes get big as the moon, and if he asks, well --

"okay, salem... i won't tell no-one... but if daddy asks he's gon' know if i'm lyin'..." and her tear-streaked, red little face is going to be a dead giveaway. "an-and what if i have a nightmare? or -- or it follows us all the way home?"

she glances behind her suddenly, paranoid.
