Battle of revenge in the wilderness: The Revenant
The Revenant won 3 Golden Globes for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio). We will take a closer look at this movie.
The most intense thing to see in this movie is when the urge to survive meets motivation. Attacked by a bear, Hugh Glass is fighting a real battle to survive. Thanks to his drive for revenge, he tries to live hungry, thirsty, without shelter and protection. What keeps him alive is the feeling of avenging his son. There is no classic good character in the movie. Although Hugh Glass is the character we can empathize with and feel close to, we don't come across one good or the only bad guy. The handling of each character is pretty good. All of them have a background and we can understand them separately. DiCaprio skillfully demonstrates maximum efficiency with minimal dialogue. I think he deserve the Oscar completely. His body language and gaze make all his feelings pass to the audience.
There is actually a good subject and message behind DiCaprio's good acting. This makes the movie unforgettable. In the first half hour from the opening scene of the film, we witness the dialogues about the animal trade made by Europeans in the American continent. In the rest of the film, we see the European states, such as France, the war for domination over the American continent and in this context the persecution of the Native Americans. In this context, the film also takes its background from the events that took place in the historical process. At this point, since Glass works in the company where the animal trade is carried out, we cannot call this character just good or just bad, the character has its own contradictions.
In the movie, we see people going wild while trying to adapt to the wild. We completely feel the integration with nature, being a part of it. In fact, we see that the war is within the human being and that the war with nature takes place only by the rules of nature. Another problem covered in the film is whether the wild nature or human beings are more dangerous.
The scene that I am most impressed with is Hugh Glass being attacked by a bear. I think it is very successful in terms of CGI. Especially the movements of the bear created with the visual effect look very realistic. Although this film won the Oscar to DiCaprio for the first time, it gained its memorability with this scene. In this scene, the audience was afraid of the reality created with the visual effect and was able to enter the scene.
The director of the film, Iñárritu, is already a well-known director and this work is memorable. Actually, Iñárritu reflects a known concept back to the screen, but while doing so, he explains the characters very well and ensures that the script keeps its pace in the best way. This shows us that even the most classic script can actually be very successful when it is processed well and values its characters. He shows us the battle of survival in the wild, believing and feeling.
