i keep seeing AWFUL skintone ranges in art and picrews so here's some advice
skintone darkness is not a light to dark slider. the skin cloud is a good place to start:
notice how there are different undertones- yellow, pink, red, orange. and there's actually a good range of darkness. the skin cloud isn't perfect but it's a really good example!
i want to mention one specific example- there's not enough mixed race skintones represented in art. now obviously i can't speak for other races, but in my experience, i rarely see a good range of latino skintones (which sucks because i am a mixed race latino!!) not every latino person looks like this:
there are afro-latinos, white latinos, asian latinos, and so much more!! we are not represented by one single skin tone. there are different undertones, different darkness, etc.
and of course, this extends to other races. so please make sure you are representing as many people as possible. if you are not willing to put the effort in, help in other ways. people of color want to be represented.
here are some helpful charts i have found:
yes, i will admit, none of these are perfect resources. but they do help you see past that simple light to dark slider- there are so many unique skin tones!!
please, represent more people of color in your artwork.
white people may reblog, in fact i encourage reblogging, but do not add anything. do not clown in the notes. people of color are more than welcome to add on! <3 reblogging appreciated from anyone.
I forgot I have to be active here so here’s my Twitter tutorial on how to draw folds I made a while back to help a friend!
very quick tutorial on how to draw glasses from a side profile
Checklist for character development.
Created by myself, compiled from questions gleaned from several sources, and some of my own additions.
See it in action: HERE
It should be noted, that not every character will check every one of these things off. It is not REQUIRED to have all this information, but this checklist is, rather, a guideline for helping you think of your character as an entire, three dimentional being with thoughts, feelings, possessions, contradictions and background.
A character is 20% revealed to the reader, 80% writer/author/Mun knowledge. What the Reader sees is just the tip of the iceburg, but without the other 80% the character can’t help but come off feeling shallow. There’s nothing beneath the surface - KNOWING as much bout your character as possible, instrinsicly, in detail, intimately, can do nothing but help build believability and dimension to your character.
Use only the things on this list that you feel are important, but I would like to remind you that the reader learns a lot about a character NOT through exposition (that’s kind of a cheat, and always feels , to me, like a rather clunky way of conveying knowlege), but through their actions, quirks, thoughts, and even through the things they own and carry with them. What kind of food they eat and how they eat it. What they wear. What they carry in their wallets. I encourage you, as writers, to consider these things when creating a character, and encourage you MORE to leave the exposition out and tell us about your character through these other means!
If nothing else, this will give you a LOT to work with when writing with your character. Maybe it’ll spur you to write about the character’s parents. Or the relationship between them and their family. Maybe you’ll find yourself inspired to write something about how they lost everything in a fire - and the importance each remembered lost item held.
There is certainly no rule that says you HAVE to do it this way, but invariably, the most memorable characters are the ones that we as readers can relate with. It’s hard to relate with just words - but people - with beliefs and dreams and fears - that’s something we can get behind.
I certainly hope you find this useful, and since so many have been inclined to reblog and like this, I shall endeavor to add more character creation and writing tips, lists and excercises up on this blog!
Edit: Because there were requests for a Medieval and Fantasy version of this list, I have created one HERE.
I hope you find it as useful as this one!
Hey guys, you know about the Same Energy website right? has someone made a post about that? Cuz otherwise im gonna sing its praises to high heaven for its artistic references
Okay so I'm just gonna talk about it even if someone's already made a post, someone's gotta spread the word of this incredible website
So you go to the main page, and you like the vibes of one of these pictures
Lets click skull face lady.
It then gives you BUNCHES of images with similar vibes. Want to tweak it a little and narrow it down further? What if you like the vibe of thatt purple one more? Well u click that one and TADA
And you can just keep narrowing down from there, and if you make an account you can even save images you like :D
I know it sounds like i'm advertising for them but honestly i would GLADLY take money to advertise for these guys, their website is still only in beta mode but already I use this (or try to) for my art warmups because I get to try to do something a little different each time. (I would give money to support them but I am broke AF so that's why I'm just spreading the word instead ;A; )
And on the front page there's even an option to search with your own images I think! (Though, I tried to do that but I kept getting an Error, so I don't know if that's a Me With Bad Internet issue or a Website issue. Again, website is in beta, so if it is a problem on their end it will hopefully be fixed soon).
and i just love this website cuz its GREAT for collecting asthetics and vibes (i mean, hence the name "same energy")
It's like Pinterest on crack :0
So yeah :D Definitely go check out Same Energy, it is a GREAT resource for artists and those trying to collect specific vibes.
Head Model Studio (Android and iOS)
Useful app for rotating a head around with customizable lights, focal length, and some degree of facial feature customization.
Has full free functionality, premium (subscription and lifetime access) unlocks fancier models. Pictured are the only two free models, but they’ve got a higher-poly planar head and Asaro heads, as well as other classical sculptures.
Someone recently was asking how I draw the digitigrade legs for some demon characters I drew recently. They have cloven hooves. I compiled a nice lil ref for them to use and figured I would share here as well. Ref images are a mix of goat and cow anatomy. My personal style also incorporates more of an equine shape to the fetlock and pastern, but everyone's rendition will be (and should be) a little different as to fit their own style of work.
enjoy!
(I know I usually say not to repost, but please feel free to save and use this image as needed)
