Running with a Rescue
Recently I went running with my pup, Dusty. He was a rescue from a township and we don’t know how many weeks/months he spent fighting for his life with nothing to eat or drink.
We also don’t know how many people chased him out, shouted at him. We don’t know if he was scared running down roads etc.
Fast forward to today. I took Dust for a run recently and we were running on a pathway that is next to a road. We were perfectly safe on the pathway but the constant stream of cars coming towards us completely freaked Dusty out. He had an absolute panic and tried to pull himself away from the road at every possible moment. Luckily we were running quite close to a park with fields, so we could reroute and go through the park.
But this got me thinking hard about the trauma rescue dogs face. This is my first rescue, and I see the trauma in a lot of places.
When we sweep (was he chased by a broom?)
When we run (was he stuck on a road?)
When we eat (how many days was he starving?)
When we vacuum or dry our hair (where did he live where there was a loud noise?)
I’m so glad I can learn from Dusty and walk this journey with him. But it devastates me that these beautiful animals carry such trauma in their souls. They’re so pure. They love so hard. They don’t derserve this.
A morning in bed with the pups. Bliss.
It’s a bad pic but my 5 year old took it without asking, so that’s a win 😋
Nope Mom. Find somewhere else to sleep.
