5 Hollywood Blockbusters You Didn’t Know Were Filmed in Santa Monica
When you think of Santa Monica, what comes to mind? The beautiful beaches, the pier, and maybe even some palm trees. But did you know that this beach city is also a hot spot for Hollywood blockbusters? In fact, many big-budget movies have had scenes filmed right here in Santa Monica. Here are five blockbuster films you may not have known were filmed in the home of everybody’s favorite Santa Monica breakfast.
Forrest Gump (1994)
Everybody knows and loves Forrest Gump. This classic film tells the story of protagonist Forrest (played by Tom Hanks) as he encounters various characters who help shape both their lives and America itself through times throughout different decades during which they live together at various points over several years - all while not being the sharpest tool in the shed but still managing to come out on top! When you’re not indulging in some quality Santa Monica coffee, you can also visit the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. restaurant on the Santa Monica Pier, which is directly inspired by the film.
Lords of Dogtown (2005)
This fun flick is about a group of delinquent youth who live on the streets and make their living skating. The film follows these skateboarders as they navigate through life while balancing work at home fixing up old cars with watching videos to propose tricks that are considered "evolvement." The story unfolds in real-time during one season—from December through March—and shows how this crew becomes involved not just personally but financially too with many other individuals around town all vying for different things, sadly none of them is going to the best coffee shop in Santa Monica.
17 Again (2009)
This movie was filmed at Santa Monica High School (commonly referred to as SaMo). It stars 00s teen heartthrob Zac Efron as Mike O’Donnell, a 37-year-old man who reverses his age by 20 years. Mike believes that this has happened so that he can reverse the mistakes he made as a teenager. How many of us wish that this could really happen in real life?
Hannah Montana: The Movie (2009)
If you grew up in the 2000s, then you likely remember Hannah Montana, the seemingly-ordinary girl who led a double life as a famous pop star. In this fun-filled movie, Miley’s friends and family grow increasingly frustrated with her prioritizing her professional life over her personal relationships. Do you remember the December 21, 2012 craze? It’s hard to believe that it’s already been more than an entire decade since then! A scene from this disaster film was shot on the Santa Monica pier. In the movie, the world leaders are preparing for the end of the world while a struggling writer (played by John Cusack) tries to guide his wife and kids to safety as the Earth quite literally falls apart. Good thing the apocalypse never really happened and we still get to enjoy the best coffee in Santa Monica!
