antishippers are so stupid imo. They'll come under someone's darkship post and say "y-y-you can't ship that!!!1!1!11!!1 i-i-i-it's BAD!!!!!!!" but they never give any explanation as to why people shouldn't ship it other than "it's gross." Okay, it's immoral irl, and we know that. But why should that stop people? Does it hurt anyone? Does it give you mental disorders? Will it corrupt you? They never answer these questions and their only justification to their harassment of darkshippers and proshippers is "this dynamic is weird to me."
Literally what I try to tell them but I'm always still the bad one😭 I've been trying to avoid pro/anti discourse as of late but its really difficult because, well I'm a hetalia fan and 90% of the fans are staunch antishippers. The sane fans are usually older and have been in the fandom for a long time which is cool but it makes me feel kinda idk liek I dont fit in with any of them since im a newgen. They are genuinely quite stupid because how can you think consuming problematic media makes you a bad person and it will affect your real life values. Like you guys LITERALLY like hetalia, but its not going to turn you into a nazi sympathizer or fascist or whatever, so why would consuming abusive ship tropes make you support the same abuse irl...? Some of the proship trolls also give us a bad name, like the ones on tiktok who use the obnoxious typing quirks and act like 12 year olds

The Hetalia fandom loves to say they hate fictional incest because its 'weird' or 'problematic' or 'illegal,' but why do these terms suddenly not apply when its a ship that they personally enjoy?
Colonizer x colonized: Sweden x Finland, Denmark x Norway, Russia x Finland etc. Both very popular ships in the Hetalia fandom, but is it not 'weird' to ship a country who oppressed the other for years?
Sexual harasser x victim: Lithuania x Poland, France x UK, etc. Isn't sexual harassment 'illegal'?
Abuser x victim: Russia x literally anyone, but most notably Lithuania. Abuse is illegal.
Stalker x victim: Russia x China. Stalking is a crime.
Abuser x abuser: Russia x America. Though canonically they are not too abusive with each other, the fandom likes to portray them in a 'toxic yaoi' way, which makes the dynamic abusive, which, abuse is 'problematic.'
Fascist x fascist: Germany x Italy, Germany x Japan, etc. Fascism is pretty bad, isn't it? I would say that's 'problematic.'

for context im an OLDDDD hetalia fan. im getting back into hetalia again after like 12 years of not being in it and. yeah. it's pretty hard to try to get into the fandom now because of all the shipping discourse rebranded as moral purity that straight up just did not exist back then. tbh coming back it just doesnt feel like the same fun online community it once was bc of the weird puriteen cherry picked witch hunting. it makes me wish I had a time machine so I could go back and just enjoy the old fandom once again as it was before pro ship and anti ship terms suddenly became the standard.
now back to hetalia. (old man voice) back in my day, all of the popular ships were "incest." like let's be so real... they're land masses. they dont have real parents they're blood related to. they were spawned pretty much into existence. with the popular ships, there's not really such thing as them being truly Blood Related. They exist in proximity and have similar cultures so Himaruya will consider them 'related' but what these fans have to know is that it's all fictional, they cannot be physically related at all.
Now. Here is what I don't understand at all.
If we are now focusing on moral compasses- how does Hetalia have any new fans at all? Aren't they aware the source material itself is harmful and racist? I constantly see art of Germany with the iron cross and nobody seems to bat an eye. People are fine pretending the WWII anime isn't racist and isn't set in world war II following the fascists who committed one of the largest genocides in history that we still talk about today. In one of your posts you point out all of the other popular ships with their toxic historical contexts and you are completely right! Why is colonization fine, but young people are drawing the line at pseudocest? It just leaves me scratching my head.
I am assuming they will all grow out of it after they hit age 24~25 because that's typically what happens tbh. if they could replace their current energy for witch hunting online to protect imaginary land masses from an anime, into getting involved in their irl community then I think it would be good for them to realize that theres actual real issues they can focus on instead. lol. okay rant over ty if you made it this far.
I'm a dumb newgen fan (2024) so unfortunately I was never able to experience the fandom without all the harassment and judgement. I agree with all of them being land masses and, you know. Not actually related. Anyone can headcanon what they want, but it's insufferable when they try to shove these headcanons down everyone's throat. Personally, I do consider Germany and Prussia + Italy and Romano actually siblings because they are part of the same country, but that's really it. I don't care if someone ships them (i ship them too🤫).
I got into Hetalia because I love learning abkut history and different countries and cultures. Sure it isn't a great representation, but that's what headcanons and fanfic are for. I don't understand the 12-13 year olds who joined the fandom 2 months ago who are complaining about the source material being 'problematic.' Yes it's problematic, but why do you enjoy it so much if you hate what it represents? I don't like the stereotypes and some of the bad portrayals but I'm still able to enjoy the anime/manga because I know it is fictional media I am consuming, not something that will actively turn me into a racist.
I'm just gonna rant about this really quick, Hetalia was what made ne comfortable in the 'proship' label. Kind of ironic considering how evil the fans have become. Starting at a very young age I enjoyed reading/writing/looking at fanart of media that portrayed incest or noncon and just overall toxic things. It was wrong, obviously, because I was a child, but I guess I was a freak at a young age (also mostly unrestricted interneg access led me to this). This persisted to my early teenage years where I had to see my friends around me saying how much they hated proshippers and saying how they're disgusting and weird, and I would have to pretend to go along with it while I was secretly consuming this content. I was also a hypocrite, though, because I would still consider proshippers 'weird' even if I liked all the same stuff as them😭 anyway in current times, or circa April 2025, I started liking UsUk, which I didn't think should be problematic because they aren't even related. I didn't consider myself a proshipper here, either, but I was totally anti-harassment and thought it was dumb when people were harassed over characters.
I think I fully became comfortable with the label in August. Part of what made me comfortable was how many fans liked these same tropes as me, even if the majority of them were from 10 years ago. The problem before was that every single fandom I was in before Hetalia had only very few proship fans, and the ones that were proship would get harassed off of the internet. Hetalia made me more comfortable because of all the fanart and fanfic that existed. And no I don't only like the 'weird' or 'problematic' pairings, my favorite ships are literally GerIta and RusAme lol. Anyway idk what that rant is about I just wanted to say that Hetalia made me more comfortable with myself. The newer fans don't affect me too much because they all talk like children.
I hate when the newgens try to make excuses to make their ships/characters seem less 'weird.' I seriously hate when they try to say 'Germany and Prussia aren't Nazis, they were against it!!' no they were not. And that's okay, you can like characters who are Nazis, it's not going to make you start liking Nazis in real life. Literally nothing indicates that Germany was against Nazis except for when he expresses dislike for his boss like, one time. I just don't know how these people are capable of enjoying this fandom when they take out all the spice and refuse to ship anything beyond boiled chicken. What I enjoy the MOST about Hetalia is that I can explore very dark themes quite easily.
I do hope they grow out of it, but I've unfortunately seen some very real 25+ antis and it makes me lose hope in humanity😭
