Josh shook his head, “No, not yet. He didn’t start too long ago and then this happened,” he explained and gave her hand a squeeze. “I know it is. Everything has just happened so fast and we were in this blissful bubble that we didn’t want to burst it yet with reality and decisions.” Josh blushed when he realized what Chloe had just explained, “I’m so sorry, I didn’t get that. My mind is still confused and tired,” he apologized. “You could come with me to the Davidson and we can see how far or close the rental is, Miss.”

“It’s okay, sweetheart.I had a feeling you weren’t following which is why I reiterated.” Chloe asked the waitress for a check and waited for it to arrive before leaving cash on the table. “Let’s go ahead and do that now. Sam’s at the house with our dog. I wish to say he’ll cook dinner for us but he never did get a hang of the kitchen.” Chloe slipped the strap of her purse over her shoulder and stood up. “Will his family be okay with me coming by the house? Will Matt? I haven’t talked to him, really talked to him, in awhile. And I do want to give him a hug because I know how scary all of this must have felt.”

“I know what it means to us, but deep down, I still feel like this is not what he would want to do for the rest of his life,” Josh shrugged, worried slightly about what life would have in their future. “I would love to. As soon as we go back to Toronto I will give you a call and we can go together if you want. I can’t wait to meet your dog,” his smile got a little brighter. Chloe’s words didn’t surprise him, he knew how protective his friend was of her sub, especially with everything -Sam had gone through, but he understood Sam’s point of view as well, “I understand why you don’t like the idea of him in a place like that, but perhaps after all he went through, this place helps him get some of his confidence back.”

“Have you tried to have a serious talk with him about what you’re feeling because it seems like you have a legitimate worry, sweetheart.” A hand reached out to take his. “I know it’s not easy to have those types of talks but when it’s serious...” she didn’t finish her thought because she felt she got the point across. Then again, she wasn’t one to say much considering what she just shared about Sam’s job. But they’ve talked about it a few times and in the end she chose to just let it be. “I meant the rental we’re staying in here. We didn’t stay at a hotel and got an actual house! Maybe it’s not too far from Matty’s parent’s house?” Chloe smiled in hopes he’ll say yes.

Josh let out a soft chuckle when Chloe stopped herself from cursing, “It should be but fortunately there are people like you, like Matt, like Master Bradley. You are the kind of Dominants who are helping to make a change for us,” he smiled. There was a hint of a blush upon Josh’s cheeks at the memory, “Yes, that is how we met. I suppose somehow photography always will have a special place in our hearts,” he sighed, remembering that first kiss.

The good news about Sam brought a brighter smile on Josh’s face, “I’m glad to hear things are getting better for him. I love how much you had supported each other. Made each other stronger.” He tilted his head, a curious glim in his eyes, “Why don’t you like his job?”

“That’s why I thought he went with it, because of the tie it has when it comes to you and how it makes him feel.” Chloe went on a limb with that guess, she knew it, but it wasn’t unlike her to make such assumptions. “Sam and I are staying at the cutest house a couple neighborhoods over. You should come with me to look at it. Not like we plan to move into it but we can hang out there and you can play with our dog. He goes everywhere with us. Maybe Matty can meet us there, too.” Chloe’s words slowed to a stop and she chewed her lower lip and closed her eyes while taking a deep breath. “He works at a strip club. He’s not a dancer but he’s around that world all the time. The pay brings in a lot. A lot more than I ever did when I worked at the dance studio. But it’s still a shady job to me.”

“I know. Thinking about not being able to do what we enjoy doing it’s heartbreaking,” Josh admitted. It was something he never said out loud in Matt’s presence. “I think it’s enough to keep him focused on something positive and not dwelling on what he has lost. For now, his job and mine are enough for both of us to have a comfortable life. Nothing too ostentatious, but neither of us is drawn to that kind of life.” Josh has finished his coffee by now and offered Chloe a warm smile, “How has everything been for Sam?”

“It really, really is and I always have to remind myself that not everybody has the same level of privilege that I have. Sam’s usually the one who has to keep me grounded when it comes to that because I get so f-” she caught her near swear and continued, “I get frustrated with how different the world is for me compared to you. It should be the same. And there are people out there who agree with me but they get laughed at by the politicians.” This wasn’t what they were supposed to be doing and Chloe needed to reel her passionate tirade back. “That’s good it’s positive. When you’re hit with something out of your control it can get hard to see the good in things. But I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised he went with photography. Isn’t that how you got to know each other?”

Chloe pushed her plate to the side and brought her mostly melted milkshake back in front of her. “He’s great. He’s been working hard at this club and brings in a lot of money. I’m not thrilled about this job but he says it’s one he wants to keep because he got it himself and the pay is decent.” Chloe didn’t think think she would ever be fine with this but they reached a point that the only way he’d leave was if she forbade it and she couldn’t think of ever doing that to her claim.

Chloe nodded her head while he talked and frowned, “I remember when you took care of him but I didn’t realize the injury was that bad.” She ate more fries and sucked the salt off her thumb before the sandwich returned to her hands. “I want to teach both. I will start with adults and work my way to kids. I just need to figure out the best way to make it work.” She said and, “I know I need to come up with a business plan and get serious when I finally have my studio.”

Josh’s expression got sad, “We hoped the surgery had fixed it but it didn’t. Even to this day, he has some pain from time to time. It was a hard blow for him not being able to do what he dreamt of.” He knew Matt didn’t talk about it often, or at all, but it was clear for Josh whenever his Dom had that longing expression whenever they were watching a game or the kids playing in the park nearby. “I am sure you are going to be an amazing teacher,” Josh assured. “I have no doubt you will be able to find some kind of financial aid if you look for it in banks or associations.”

“I can’t imagine losing the ability to dance.” She said after Josh spoke, the linger in her voice carried as her blue eyes went to the mostly eaten sandwich on her plate. “I’ve done it all my life and to go without? It’s like not even something I can think about.” Her hand went to the side of her arm and Chloe rubbed it slowly. “Do you think photography helps?” Chloe ate the last of her fries, which lost most of its heat by now.

Chloe brought her phone out and did a search on her maps to see how far it is from the academy. “Oh my god, Joshy. You’re not far from me. This is so happening. And I’m sorry about what Matt’s family is going through but I’m happy to be back in your life.” Chloe then set her sandwich down and said, “Hey! It’s okay. There are things that have made me not want to be there anymore but I’m still a student and there’s no way I’m leaving before I graduate. I real want to start my dance studio but I need to get my degree and then focus on making that happen!” She was rambling and bouncing around with the topics. “What is Matt doing now? Did he try anything with sports?”

Josh smiled, “You know you are always welcome at our place, Miss. We could make it a week dinner thing,” he proposed. “Thank you, Miss. I’m happy to have you back. I missed you a lot,” he confessed out loud. “I am sure you will do amazing with your own school. Are you planning to teach kids or only adults?”The question about Matt and sports caused him to sigh and look down, “No, not anymore. He busted his shoulder when we were in the academy. He’s pursuing photography at the moment. He is very good at it, but I’m not sure if he is going to take a different path when we get back home.”

“That’s because the government here is run by a bunch of old people who don’t change their ways no matter how wrong it is. You know why? Money. Power. It’s always those two things though I think they go hand in hand.” She was saying this louder than she meant to and calmed herself before she had someone say something. “Which bakery is it? Do you live close to it?” 

She set her milkshake down and went ahead and picked up her sandwich. “When was the last time you went to the academy? You should come by and hang out with me in my room. Just like how we used to.” She offered before biting into her food.

“I know. And it’s something I’m hoping and praying one day it will change,” Josh sighed. He smiled when she asked about his workplace, “The Dufflet Pastries. I think you would love it there. And you would like my boss. He is a great Dom. I live a few blocks from there,” he smiled.

Josh blushed slightly at the question, feeling guilty, “I haven’t been there since I graduated and moved to my apartment. I had bittersweet memories and I didn’t want to go there after Matt left,” he admitted, “I’m sorry I stopped visiting you.”

“It could be that or an older and unclaimed submissive taking advantage of a vulnerable Dom who just went through a stressful and traumatic situation. Submissives are the ones to blame here, Miss,” Josh said feeling a bitter taste in his mouth at the simple idea of someone thinking he would take advantage of the man he loved. “I will make sure you are the first one to know,” he promised with a smile. “Yes, I do. After my parents got me the apartment, I decided I would stay there and wait in case Master Matt would decide to come back. We certainly should. I would love to see you and Sam more often.”

“You’d think after everything I’ve been through my mind would go to that but I just...don’t. Not on my own.” She said as she ate a few fries and sat back, eyes on him while she chewed. “I don’t see that. I think when it comes to it everyone is of equal blame. If anything more Dominants are in the wrong because they are in charge of most situations. Besides, you’ve been claimed by the government, right? Or is it the restaurant or bakery...or hotel you’re with? I just realized I don’t know where you work!” she admitted and laughed, embarrassed. “Well, then! Looks like we’ve got a lot of future dates together. That way we will always be up to date with what’s happening in our lives. Sam and I in the middle of a house hunt. So far nothing’s really stood out for me.”

It’s almost as if a black cloud follows Sam and me around, ready to rain terrible things. The only thing I can take away from this, where it’s viewed in a positive is that it makes us stronger. But fuck, Joshy. It’s so much.” Chloe remembered how how Matt was for Josh, the Domme talked to him a few times about her friend. There was even that one party they disappeared and she was convinced they fucked in the closet. “Because of his dad?” She asked, voice serious. “Is he doing better? I hope so. I want to send something to the family. Maybe order a nice dinner for all of them.”

Joah nodded, “I understand that it must feel like too much, but I also know you can do this. You and Sam can move past this the best way possible.” He wished he could take her pain away and do something to help them, but he also knew it was something they probably would never get completely over with. “Yes. His dad is doing better, but we will stay here for a little while. And I don’t think it is the best moment to announce a claim. And if we do it here we will be questioned. They will want to know if we are not doing it out of vulnerability with the situation,” Josh finally said out loud one of his fears. Being back in the States wasn’t something he was entirely comfortable with.  He knew things were not the same and he was not so openly accepted as an unclaimed submissive as he was in Canada. “I am very sure his family would appreciate that gesture, Miss.”

Chloe listened and sipped on her milkshake as soon as she waitress dropped it off with her food. The straw moved around and she laughed. “Okay. I can see why people will think your announcement will be to bring happiness to a family that’s been through something scary. But you better tell me as soon as the announcement is made because I’m so helping you plan your ceremony!” She said with such a smile you’d think she was the one about to get into an informal claim. “Do you still live in Toronto? Because we need to make this a regular thing.”

That was beautiful and Chloe looked at Josh with such sad eyes but an understanding smile replaced her frown, “God. You have no idea how much I’ve missed you, Joshy.” she said and reached across the table to take his hand. “You always have such a wonderful way of looking at the world and Sam helps me with seeing how there’s always more to what’s out there but you have a way of making it beautiful. In it’s own way.”

The waitress couldn’t leave soon enough and Chloe laughed. “I knew it! Just by looking at him he came across as one of those guys who’s cocky but he has a reason to be.” She grinned, moving to pull her legs up on the booth and to get comfy. “So. Great sex. Happy life. Think I’ll be getting invitation to a claiming ceremony in the near future?”

“Probably as much as I missed you,” Josh said with a soft smile as he listened to his best friend, “I try my best not to let the ugly of the world overshadow all the wonderful things we have. It’s not easy and it does not work all the time, but I try to remind other people too. It makes bad things hurt a little less.”

Josh laughed too, “I kind of knew it too. The things we did when we were at Cavendish gave me a clear idea of how intense and passionate he was.” He couldn’t believe he was talking to someone about this. Especially because he hadnt told anyone what happened and how his relationship with Matt changed. “I think so, but I’m not so sure how soon. Things are still complicated with his family.”

“I cannot even fathom how terrible it must be. I don’t think there will be an amount of time that would make you feel like it’s not a fresh wound,” he sighed.

There was another blush on Josh’s face, “We are. It’s not weird at all. It feels natural and perfect,” he chuckled. “We are in love. I finally told him how I felt for him and why I waited for him. He told me he loved me and that he wanted me back and,” he sighed, “you were right, we always worked and we only needed to be honest with each other.” He looked down shyly and smiled, “I’m not a virginal submissive anymore” he confessed to her, knowing she might squeal in excitement to the news.

There was so much truth with what he said and Chloe’s big blue eyes looked at him, softening her smile and nodding. “That’s what I keep reading. There will always be that part of us that will wonder how little Jacob would have been if he were alive. He would have been close to one by now.”

The waitress came over just as Josh confessed what he did and she looked up to see if the woman picked up what was said but she just asked for their order. Chloe went for a chocolate shake and french fries, deciding to enjoy some comfort food while with her friend. When she went away Chloe leaned forward, grinning from ear to ear. “And?” She asked, very enthusiastic to hear about this. “Was it worth the wait?”

“I think you both will know when is the best moment to try again. I cannot imagine him not wanting the same,” Josh offered a smile. “Perhaps he is scared to tell you he wants the same because he wants to take care of you.” It hurt him to see her crying, but he was proud of her for how much she had grown. “It is,” his smile got brighter.  “We are living together. Everything happened too fast and it felt right. The night he arrived in Canada I offered my place for him to stay,” Josh’s cheeks colored softly, “A lot happened and I want to believe we are happy together.”

She nodded, hand still on he stomach and not even aware of it until that moment. Chloe moved it to her thigh and she said, “It’s been a year. Since it happened. I can’t believe how something like that, so horrible, can feel as long ago but still so very fresh on my mind.” She’d wanted to talk to someone about this and everyone at the academy looked at her with such sad eyes. It was hard to want to open up to people who viewed her as somewhat damaged.

“You’re living together? That’s huge, Joshy! How’s that? Was it weird? Are you in love? I need to know all the happy details so I can awww and then want to hug you and say that I knew things would work out in some way.” She kept going on and on because this was terrific news, something bright and sunny.

I still have days I wake up and look to see if it was a bad dream and his crib is next to our bed.” She didn’t talk to many people about what happened, mostly Sam and her therapist. “Sam is fine. He’s been working and bringing in most of the money while I finish the last of school. We’re looking for a house to move into. We decided to stick to Toronto.” She shared with him. “What about you? I know things with Matt were rough but before that what have you been doing?”

Josh noticed Chloe’s reaction and squeezed her shoulder, “I can imagine. I wanted to be there for you, but I didn’t want to intrude. I knew it would cause Sam stress to have another sub around when he felt the need to comfort you,” he sighed. “I am glad to hear he is doing well. I never doubted he would make you happy and take good care of you,” Josh smiled reached for her hand, “That is great, it is a lot better to stay there. Things here are not that great for submissives, Sam will have better chances there. You both will.” He couldn’t help to beam at the question about Matt, “Things were rough but before this happened, we were focused on reconnecting with each other. I was very lucky that he came back and wanted me back.”

Chloe knew Josh to be one of the most sincere people she’d ever met and when he spoke it was from a place of love and understanding. She nodded and sniffled a little because she did miss the way they would talk and how he was constantly honest even with the s on his wrist. “We’ve started to talk about trying again. I’m not sure if it’s too soon but I really want a family with him.” She shared and picked up the napkin to dab away the small tears which gathered at the corners of her eyes. “Reconnecting is nice. Are you living together or does he have his own place?” She didn’t know much about what they were up to as this was the most they’ve talked in a long, long time.

Chloe was in the middle of drinking her water when she spotted a very familiar face. “Joshy!!!” she said, loud enough to make the people around her look at them with surprise. She went up to the submissive and gave him the biggest hug imaginable. It’d been so long and she couldn’t believe they were finally here together. “I have fucking missed you.” she said into his chest and looked up at him with wet eyes as she shed a few tears. “Are you okay? How’s Matt? His dad?” She let go of him eventually and went to sit back down, motioning for him to join her. “Get anything you’re craving. It probably isn’t as good as what you make but at least you get a break from cooking.” 

Josh wasn’t able to stop the huge smile on his face when he heard that nickname. She was the only one calling him that and he realized then how much he has missed it. He returned the hug and pressed a soft kiss on the top of her head, “I’ve missed you too. I’m so sorry for not being able to be there with you,” he cut himself before ending the sentence and only hugged her tighter. “I’m okay, so is Matt and his father is recovering well. It will take a while for him to be back to his normal life, but we will help as much as we can. Josh sat in front of Chloe and offered another smile, “A coffee is more than okay for now. I am sure everything is delicious but I would rather listen to how you have been. How are things with Sam?”

Josh was excited to get to see Chloe after so long. Especially after everything she had gone through. He wished he could have been there for them, but he knew Sam and Chloe needed that time for themselves.

He felt emotionally exhausted after everything that happened with Matt’s dad. It hasn’t been an easy situation for anyone at the Davidson’s, but thankfully, everything was getting better, slowly, but better.

Taking a deep breath, Josh got into the diner, beaming when he finally spotted his best friends. He walked towards the table and sighed, grinning at her,“Hello, Miss Chloe!”
