Video- Home Sweet Home
In most cases, domestic violence is an internal conflict that can go unnoticed to those not involved in the situation. The best way to end the violence is to seek help and get out of the relationship before things become fatal.
"Only the strong survive."- Darwin
WHAT'S THE ISSUE.
do-mes-tic vi-o-lence Noun Violent or aggressive behavior within the home, typically involving the violent abuse of a spouse or partner. -dictionary
"Domestic violence can be defined as a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner."-evefoundation
The abusive behavior can come in many forms; the most common, physical, mental, sexual, verbal, emotional, or economic. The physical abuse can be identified through actions such as hitting, pushing, or neglecting to provide medical attention when needed. Mental abuse is when fear is caused by intimidation or threats to the victim. Sexual abuse is when sexual behavior is being forced upon a partner or child without consent. Verbal abuse is done when words or phrases are thrown out to belittle another. This ties in with emotional abuse.
Domestic violence is a crime that commonly goes unreported. This act is typically subjected to violence upon women, but is not limited to men and children.
25% of women have experience domestic violence within their lifetime.
women account for 85% of domestic assault, 15% of men (Bureau of Justice Statistics Crime Data Brief)
women ages 20-24 are the subjects of nonfatal domestic violence (Bureau of Justice Statistics Crime Data Brief
Between 600,000 and 6 million women are victims of domestic violence each year, and
between 100,000 and 6 million men (Rennison, C. (2003, Feb).
1,181 females and 329 males were killed by their intimate partners in 2005 (office of justice programs)
WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?
One of the main causes of domestic violence stems from a prolonged conflict either within oneself or within a family. The abuse can start of subtle, going seemingly unnoticed as verbal assaults or mental attacks. Violence within families is also commonly substance related, due to mental health issues, or done out of spite. It could later escalate to sexual assaults or physical abuse. No matter the extent of the abuse, it is abuse none the less. "More than % of dv situations go unrepported a year."-
“What counts in making a happy marriage is not so much how compatible you are, but how you deal with incompatibility.”
Leo Tolstoy
“It is important for people to know that no matter what lies in theri past, they can overcome the dark side and press on the a brighter world.”
― Dave Pelzer, A Child Called "It"
Safe Horizon is a victim assistance agency that provides support, prevents violence, and promotes justice for victims of crime and abuse, their families and communities.
The Victims
One in 4 women will experience domestic violence during her lifetime.
Women experience more than 4 million physical assaults and rapes because of their partners, and men are victims of nearly 3 million physical assaults.
Women are more likely to be killed by an intimate partner than men
Women ages 20 to 24 are at greatest risk of becoming victims of domestic violence.
Every year, 1 in 3 women who is a victim of homicide is murdered by her current or former partner.
The Families
Every year, more than 3 million children witness domestic violence in their homes.
Children who live in homes where there is domestic violence also suffer abuse or neglect at high rates (30% to 60%).
A 2005 Michigan study found that children exposed to domestic violence at home are more likely to have health problems, including becoming sick more often, having frequent headaches or stomachaches, and being more tired and lethargic.
A 2003 study found that children are more likely to intervene when they witness severe violence against a parent – which can place a child at great risk for injury or even death.
The Circumstances
Domestic violence is most likely to occur between 6 pm and 6 am.
More than 60% of domestic violence incidents happen at home.
The Consequences
According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, domestic violence is the third leading cause of homelessness among families.
In New York City, 25% of homeless heads of household became homeless due to domestic violence.
Survivors of domestic violence face high rates of depression, sleep disturbances, anxiety, flashbacks, and other emotional distress.
Domestic violence contributes to poor health for many survivors. For example, chronic conditions like heart disease or gastrointestinal disorders can become more serious due to domestic violence.
Among women brought to emergency rooms due to domestic violence, most were socially isolated and had fewer social and financial resources than other women not injured because of domestic violence.
Without help, girls who witness domestic violence are more vulnerable to abuse as teens and adults.
Without help, boys who witness domestic violence are far more likely to become abusers of their partners and/or children as adults, thus continuing the cycle of violence in the next generation.
Domestic violence costs more than $37 billion a year in law enforcement involvement, legal work, medical and mental health treatment, and lost productivity at companies.

I'm just gonna assume.
From collecting research, it can be implied that out of all types of abuse, physical abuse in domestic situations goes unreported due to lingering feelings in relationships. Many children who are subjected to violence in their homes grow up to suffer the consequences-- they are likely to become substance abusers, carry on the abuse, or live with a life time of regret. Families who are a part of domestic violence situations will carry on their lives in fear. Their self respect will be crushed and they are subjected to become depressed.
Out of 18 surveyed more than half of teens in AHS thought that mental abuse was worse than physical abuse. Mental abuse attacks the mind. It makes you doubt your self worth and can deteriorate your sense of being.
14/18 people know someone who has been abused. Out of those 18 only 3 of them have actually reached out to the victim of abuse. Surprisingly, a lot of people did not know about the dangers domestic violence takes on in their communities. And more people than none were not sure if there will ever be a way to successfully stop domestic violence.

Seek Help
"Even apparently mild cases of DV can become severe quickly, and in most cases does not get better without outside intervention and some very direct action by the recipient of the violence, such as police intervention or leaving the relationship."- goodtherapy.org
GET OUT of the relationship if at all possible. in most cases, leaving the relationship when things become too extreme is the best possible solution. Getting out of a violent situation could be the one thing that saves your life.
"It Starts Where it Begins" Despite this scenario, the roles could be reversed; the male is not always the aggressor. Take a step back and realize domestic violence of any kind is not okay. "We all know how it starts, now change how it ends." Violence is not the solution to the problem, it is the problem.

Pelzer, David J. A Child Called 'It' London: Orion, 2001. Print.
Domestic violence
A Child Called it reviews in detail the horror, author Dave Pelzer faced as a child. It covers the events that happened from the time he was a child up until his teenage years in which he was able to escape his abuse. As a child, Dave was abused by the person who is supposed to love you most, his mother. This was a more serious situation than the previous novel I read, but in the end the character still overcame his conflict.
This book was a decent source for my research paper. The detail of events that took place during the childhood of the author helped make the situations more real which bought light to the fact that domestic violence is real. The conflict in this book contrasts the differences in some family relationships. In this case, the exact conflict the author faced was within his family but strived to overcome them. The information in this novel was based on true events which happened to the author, making it biased.

Domestic Violence
The Joyful Heart Foundation is an organization started by Mariska Hargitay to bring awareness to sexual assault, child abuse, and domestic violence. Joyful Heart seeks to end domestic violence in all communities while making attempts to heal, educate and empower survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse, and to shed light into the darkness that surrounds these issues. This is done through Healing & Wellness, Education & Awareness and Policy & Advocacy.
I chose to reflect on the Joyful Heart organization because it is a contrast to my research that shows that there are actions being taken to promote and stop domestic violence and child abuse. Being that this organization is founded by a reliable representative, it is valid.
"Children and Domestic Violence - Fact Sheet." Children and Domestic Violence - Fact Sheet. N.p., n.d. Web
Domestic violence
The website Children and Domestic Violence is a private fact based website that gives details and statistics on children and domestic violence. 15.5 million children in the US live in homes where domestic violence occurs. In a single day in 2007, 13,485 children were living in a domestic violence shelter or transitional housing facility. Another 5,526 sought services at a non-residential program. More than 3 women per day are murdered by their partners. The list of statistics goes on and on. This website enlightens viewers on the real facts of violence within the home which is why I chose it.
The organization Formerly Family Violence Prevention Fund stands behind the information presented here. Their mission is to take public action to prevent violence against women, children and families around the world. I retained a lot of good information from this source that will assist me in conducting my research.
"Family & Relationships." Http://www.apa.org. N.p., n.d. Web.
Family relationships
In this webpage the American Psychological Association discusses different ways to deal with and view problems that can impact a family; divorce, illness, abuse, etc. The different traumas that can impact peoples life all have an effect on a family. “At every stage of life, our relationships and families present us with both joys and challenges. Learning to manage stress, to understand our own emotions and behaviors, and to communicate effectively can help strengthen our own emotional health, as well as our connections to the important people in our lives.”
This article adds to the idea that family relationships play an important role in the development of children. In destructive family relationships, such as those dealing with domestic violence, the long term impact it has on members of the family could be damaging. The way an individual chooses to deal with crisis can be used in all arenas of an individual’s life, including intimate relationships, friendships, family relationships, single life, workplace relationships, international relationships, and your relationship with yourself. This source was very usable in conducting my research. It shows how to deal with these types of crisis’.
"Counseling Center » Understanding Dysfunctional Relationship Patterns in Your Family."Counseling Center » Understanding Dysfunctional Relationship Patterns in Your Family. N.p., n.d. Web.
Family Relationships
This article discusses dysfunctional family relationships. It details the different types of dysfunctional families dealing with addiction, threats, neglect, and inferiority. It also goes through how to understand these problems and how to resolve them.
This article brings light to the idea that families do deal with violence and internal conflict like domestic abuse and child abuse. It is spear headed by a counseling center located in Illinois. This webpage gives connections in order for people to seek out help as they embark on their journey to recovering from abuse or as they deal with it. I don’t really rely on this source for a lot of my research for the simple fact that it isn’t really fact based. The counseling center bases their standards on how they best see fit coping with a situation.
