RECAP: Shadowhunters Interviews at New York Comic Con!
ABC Family’s highly anticipated new original series “Shadowhunters” made its debut last week at New York Comic Con (Javits Center). You can find ALL the pictures and videos from the event on our Twitter or Instagram.
The “Shadowhunters” cast went straight to the press room after the panel ended to answer questions from media outlets such as The Workprint, PopWrapped and Yael.TV.
Here are the links followed by a few important quotes from those interviews, we decided not to put too many quotes because the cast was left to answer the same questions over and over again, leading to the same answers.
[Katherine and Dom] “Clary was always taught that love makes you stronger and Jace was always taught that emotions make you weak and so that kinda becomes a debate between the two of them as the season progresses.” (Katherine McNamara)
[Matthew and Harry] “I don’t think they can possibly expect how cool, how intense it’s gonna be over the course of the season.“ (Matthew Daddario)
[Emeraude and Alberto] “Isabelle is very similar to the books. She loves her brother, she’s willing to die for her brother, she’s selfless.” (Emeraude Toubia)
[Isaiah and Ed Decter] “Luke is led by his heart. […] Luke is all about Jocelyn and he’s all about Clary and I think that kinda leads him to where he wants to go.“ (Isaiah Mustafa)
[Katherine and Dominic] Kat is too easy to prank. Dom taped her to her trailer and Matthew had to come with scissors and cut her out. Matthew, however, is hard to prank.
[Matthew and Harry] ”[Malec] allows people just to be themselves and have some kind of representation that they can, maybe relate to or something; give them maybe some sort of advice on how to move forward with the feelings.“ (Harry Shum Jr.)
”Dom causes troubles, I put fires out.” (Matthew Daddario)
[Emeraude and Alberto] “She is the best Shadowhunter because she fights in heels. She’s better than Jace and she’s better than Alec.” (Emeraude Toubia)
FUN FACT: Emeraude didn’t know she got the role until 5 minutes before the announcement and her managers first pranked her by saying she didn’t get the role.
[Cassandra Clare and McG] The pilot episode is not yet finished: “That’s the beauty of television, that it evolves.“ (McG)
[Isaiah and Ed Decter] Isaiah studied lots of books on police procedures, etc for his role as Luke because he’s always wanted to play a cop/detective.
If the cast could come to Comic Con cosplayed as something:
Jace would cosplay as Alec and Clary would cosplay as a Marvel character, probably Black Widow.
Alec would not enjoy cosplaying at all: “He would put on a hat to say I’m somebody else.” (Matthew Daddario)
Magnus would cosplay 4 different characters at one time.
On describing “Shadowhunters” in a few words:

FUN FACT: The cast is planning on livetweeting the show when it airs and release more pictures of the set they can only reveal once the episodes are out.

[Interview] "We keep true to most of [the books]. It’s not like Jace hooks up with Simon in this. The relationships are still there. It’s still how they were in the books.” (Dominic Sherwood)
[K&D] “I can read like a hundred comments and if one of them is negative, that’s my day ruined. I’m gonna have a horrible day. […] It’s almost always something to do with physical appearance and to me, Jace is so much more than that.” (Dominic Sherwood)
[M&H] “A lot happens. It’s intense.” (Matthew Daddario)
[E&A] “You see [Emeraude] [use her whip] and you see what it does and you’re like “I never want to be on the end of that.”“ (Alberto Rosende)
[I&E] ”[…] the core relationships of what makes Cassandra Clare’s work so successful are absolutely honored and are there.“ (Ed Decter)
[C&M] "We needed a great everybody. We wanted to take chance with ethnicity and we wanted to break down doors and kick out stereotypes.” (McG)
FUN FACT: The cast has been on a very strict diet during the filming.
[K&D] “Clary is strong, vulnerable, selfish, loving and stubborn.” (Katherine McNamara)
[E&A] Isabelle cooks for Simon in the show and it doesn’t go really well. She and Simon have their first encounter in a very intimidating place, where Simon isn’t comfortable in and “boys shouldn’t be in”.
Isabelle’s relationship with her mom is different in the show than in the books.
Simon’s family is brought right away: “When Simon starts to go through those changes we all kinda know about, I’m interested to see how that’s going to affect him. He’s very much of a family person.” (Alberto Rosende)
[I&E] Luke’s history is explained in episode 6: “We have to introduce the series to people who absolutely have never read the books and don’t know about them all so we’re hoping we’re giving surprises and little side tricks that the fans have never seen.” (Ed Decter)
The show in 5 words: “Sexy, dark, romantic, mysterious, exciting.” (Ed Decter)
[M&H] Matthew would be Magnus or Valentine if he could be any other character. And Harry would be Camille.
On describing their characters in 5 words:

FUN FACT: Kat is faster than anyone on the cast and she runs in heels.
Matthew was shaking when he got the phone call announcing his casting as Alec.
Meliorn is a lot more important in the show.
McG’s favorite episode is the 11th one.
Matthew made up a theme song for the show between takes.
Emeraude got confused while reading the first book and filming so she stopped reading.
Alberto’s favorite book is City of Heavenly Fire: "It’s just so filled with so many twists and turns and Sizzy and places.”
Dom has read the first book only.
[K&D] “If we were using the books as scripts, everyone would know exactly what happens, when it happens, why it happens, who Jace was, who Clary is and who the characters are and their relationships…” (Dominic Sherwood)
[E&A] Dom is the prankster on set: “He wanted me to go to my trailer once and I didn’t understand why but I got a call to set so I went to set, we worked for like 2 hours and then I got back to my trailer and I saw he ducktaped my door closed so I couldn’t get in. By the time I got all the tape off, I finally got in and there was a smelly trashcan inside my trailer. And he felt bad because he only intended it to be there for like 5 minutes.” (Alberto Rosende)
FUN FACT: Alberto put nutella on the back of Dom’s door hanger.
[M&H] Alec is 20 on the show: “He’s really interesting because he doesn’t really know how to relate to people properly but he understands what needs to be done and he understands how to keep people safe.” (Matthew Daddario)
“He’s playing with people’s head all the time and that’s his way of getting what he wants. […] He always needs to be stimulated because he’s bored…” (Harry Shum Jr.)
“There are some really exciting things.. […] some good fights.” (Matthew Daddario)
FUN FACT: Harry and Matthew auditioned for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.
[I&E] They are not doing one book per season: “We borrow from all the books and we’ll be tracking along with the major giant story points.” (Ed Decter)
The cast went to dinner every time a new cast member came in town to make sure they felt part of the group and got to know each other: “We bonded just from the minutes we met each other.” (Isaiah Mustafa)
[K&D] Dom would pick Matt as his parabatai in real life and Kat would choose Alberto.
FUN FACT: Kat got the call for her casting announcement at the gym and she had to go to the ABC Family’s office to take pictures so she didn’t have time to shower or do anything, she went straight from the gym.
While training, Dom had some fun time with Alec’s weapons.
[E&A] Emeraude would pick Matt as her parabatai in real life.
Matt laughed at Emeraude’s dress at NYCC: "He’s always making fun of me.“ (Emeraude Toubia)
FUN FACT: Alberto has always shipped Clace.
[M&H] Harry’s first fitting lasted 3 hours.
[I&E] "We just put Maureen in the band so we could get to know that character better, […] know her a little better than having just been a fan that was introduced.” (Ed Decter)
[C&M] McG called Cassandra for pieces of advices and she gave him the idea to include the “other 10%” scene.

On top of those interviews, some sites such as KSiteTV and the Televixen visited the cast on set in Toronto (Canada) and released teasers on the same days NYCC took place.
[Interview] "We’ve kept everyone fairly close. The story’s very similar but we’re changing how we get to places so the journey is a little different.” (Dominic Sherwood)
“She’s headstrong, she’s confident. She knows her stuff, she knows what she wants to do.” (Katherine McNamara)
“Clary is an interloper. She comes in and she ruins everything. Alec has his stuff figured it out. He’s got his world figured it out. He likes it that way because if you add a new factor, it starts to mess with his ability to push things out of his head, out of mind. And Clary is just trouble for Alec from day one and he knows it.” (Matthew Daddario)
“He’s lived through a lot. Kinda grew in to being from a demon to a human.” (Harry Shum Jr.)
“We don’t know where he’s coming from. You see him with Clary and Jocelyn and then from there, it kinda goes a different direction. […] You get hints of him but you’re not sure about who he is until a few episodes later and you still may not know because a couple of secrets come out as we go along.” (Isaiah Mustafa)
[Katherine McNamara] “She would be a perfectly fine individual if she were just left to her mundane life.”
[Dominic Sherwood] His two phones stopped working because of the “social media explosion” after his cast announcement.
[Alberto Rosende] “I think Clary and Simon both love each other, they’re best friends. And there’s something about the familiarity and the trust that they have in one another that definitely leaves that opportunity always kinda flotting around. […] We get to explore in a new way. […] We get to go a little deeper than the books sometimes.“
[Emeraude Toubia] ”[Isabelle]’s beautiful, she’s intelligent, she’s a fighter. She’s as much as a fighter as she is a lover. […] Being Latina, it’s really nice to portray a strong character like Isabelle.”
[Matthew Daddario] “I think Alec is confused about his feelings for Jace. […] Alec is confused about his sexuality, not confused as much as just simply ignoring the feelings he has for whomever. It becomes difficult for him to differenciate between the love that he feels for his, essentially, brother and the love he might feel for someone else.”
[Harry Shum Jr.] “[Magnus]’s finally opening up.”
[Isaiah Mustafa] “[Jocelyn] is [Luke’s] friend. One of his bestfriends in the world but there’s a little bit more there.”
