Kris Dagger

Dated: 20th century

Geography: Indonesia/Malaysia

Medium: steel, gold, ebony, gems, gilded silver

Measurements: overall length 69 cm; blade length 50 cm

The dagger has a double edged, waved and grooved blade in “grass-mineral”, with a beautiful pamor or pattern known as “watermelon”. It is decorated with high-relief chiselling on the base with floral motifs and gold covered foliage, which happens as well in the ganja a mount applied at the base of the blade.

The hulu, hilt, in rhinoceros horn is sculpted in the shape of a sitting temple guard. The seult or ring which finishes it off is made of gilded silver ornamented with a ring filled with incrusted cabochon cut gems. Between this and the blade’s base there is the mendak, fitting ring, made of the same metal and also incrusted with gems.

The gandar or scabbard made of darkened wood is covered with gilded silver foil with a chiselled high-relief decoration with vegetal motifs. It shows at the mouth’s area a Bonaspati mask, which allows us to give to the Kris the designation of Topengan. The ensemble is enriched with incrusted cabochon cut gems.
