I really, honestly thought I was being nice and doing a favor when I volunteered to help on this case. After all, I was doing my thesis on the exact topic of the rituals used by the serial killer currently rampaging near my hometown.

It was convenient, considering I was already a suspect, and I wanted to explain why I would know way better than to fuck with the curses this person was messing with.

I now realize my mistake.

“You’re completely full of shit!” I shout, rubbing my temples as I continue to walk quickly away from Dr. Reid, who has been following me around asking me questions for the past ten minutes.

At first, we seemed to get along well enough. He recognized that my STEM degrees meant we could talk about somewhat complex topics without having to explain simple concepts.

Then we got on the subject of witchcraft, and everything went to hell. That was three days ago, and he was still mad. To be fair, the first time our conversation got pretty heated. I may have called him some nasty words and threatened to curse him.

I don’t know. He was rude. I didn’t actually do it!

“How am I full of shit?” He barked back, following me into my room, upon which I immediately approached my altar.

“You’re just so… so… transparent!” I gestured to him and then turned my attention back to the objects on the table, pulling out a red candle and propping it on the holder before quickly lighting it.

“If anything, you should be lighting yellow or purple, to salvage whatever of your intelligence hasn’t been corrupted at this point.”

I took a deep breath before turning around, clapping my hands together and sweetly replying, “I need the red for the strength to put up with your bullshit.”

Another one of his coworkers entered, thankfully distracting him for a couple of minutes while I rearranged the objects in front of me.

“Alright. I need to go check on JJ. I’ll come back to get you as soon as I can. Take a look around the surrounding area if you can. And Reid, please, for the love of god, leave the woman alone.”

I snickered as the person began to leave, but I called out to them before they could disappear. “Wait! When’s his birthday?”

“DON’T tell he-!”

“He’s a Scorpio!” They called back. Score.

I couldn’t help but laugh, that devilish chuckle that meant I was armed with knowledge I was ready to wield. “Of course you’re a Scorpio!”

He looked perplexed, throwing his hands to the side as he exclaimed, “What does that even mean?!”

“It means I know everything there is to know about you, Spencer.” I said in the most condescending tone I could muster, recalling his name from a previous conversation. He did not look enthused.

“I highly doubt that.”

I always loved the atmosphere to Spencer’s apartment. It was mature and scholarly, fitting for the Doctor who owned it. It was a shocking juxtaposition to the relationships I maintained in college. Back then all I knew was grungy dorm rooms and college boys who tasted like alcohol, which also fit perfectly for each other.

It had low lighting and sophisticated artwork on the walls. A lovely vintage record player sat by the wall under his plaques and degrees, along with a collection of music under it. Of course, he always preferred Mozart but I’ve slowly started to introduce him by more recent music. And by “Recent”, I mean the 70’s at the absolute latest. He was a man of refined taste, and who was I to judge him for that? But relationships were all about compromise. And his music choice just so happened to bring back back traumatic memories of my middle school violin lessons. So we decided to incorporate some Queen and David Bowie as well.

I scanned through the collection we had assembled with my fingers running over the labels as I read. Finally I settled on an old Paul Anka record I got from my grandmother. Honestly, I didn’t know it was salvageable until a few weeks ago, and since then I haven’t been able to stop playing it. I pushed it into the player and put the needle down onto my favorite track. The song echoed through the area of his large apartment. I smiled gently to myself as I stood up, swaying gently along to the sounds coming from the machine. Listening to the gentle words of love and lust, I couldn’t help but connect it to my own experience.

Spencer and I haven’t had sex in over two weeks. That may not seem like that long, but it feels like i’m in the parched desert, searching for an oasis. Which is ironic, because everything that he does makes me so wet. I would see him lick his fingers before turning a page, and I would think, God, do I wish I was that copy of… The Magical Mathematics of Quantum Physics. Then I would see him fidgeting with the belt synched around his waist and imagined how it would go if he were to pull it off and bind my hands with it, or maybe how the leather would feel whipped against my skin. Then the vicious cycle continues.

Since the first day I stepped in the bau, I knew Dr.Spencer Reid would not like me one bit.

I didn’t ask for it; I didn’t want it (no matter how much I actually wanted the position, but by my earning it on my own merits), but I completely understood something like this was likely to happen. I knew it the moment I moved back home and decided that the only thing worthwhile I really wanted to do was join the FBI. My dad was a good guy who was just trying to help me, his intentions were just a little misguided. It happens.

What doesn’t ‘just’ happen is that my dad is the deputy director of the FBI. His helping me was ‘making calls’ and ‘pulling strings’, which instantly gives my peers every reason to doubt every achievement I have.

But I was completely ready for it.  

What I wasn’t ready for is for everyone on the team to be normal and so welcoming to me, like I was any other agent. It was everything I wanted.

Well, everyone did that except him. I couldn’t figure it out why, but from the first minute he turned those eyes towards me, looking me up and down but never quite reaching my eyes, I could feel the scrutiny under the stare. Almost like he was saying “Really? This is it?”.

But with a blink it was gone, and he turned away from me and put his attention to the book in his hand so fast I almost thought I imagined the whole thing.

But I knew, I knew I saw it. And I knew that even if I didn’t want it, my body and brain would spend days trying to make him acknowledge me again, to look me up and down again, to try and prove to him what I’ve been trying to prove to everyone:

I deserved to be there. I could earn it by myself. I just need the chance to do it.

And so, my journey to try to not only be useful but a valuable agent, someone he would have to notice began.

 And it was shit.

Everyone was so willing not only to teach me, but to listen to my input.

Luke always had my back, both of us being the newbies in the team. JJ and Tara were always open to listening to theories, doubts and rambling, besides being totally badass inspirations. Penelope always had a eager and friendly attitude that could comfort me immediately, and she welcomed me with open arms. Emily and Rossi were patient, while also pushing me to be so much better, and being the best mentors they could be.

None of them even seemed to have even a passing thought of giving me special treatment or harsher judgment. It was almost perfect.

If it wasn’t for Special Fucking Agent Doctor Reid. He wouldn’t even be an asshole towards me, oh no, It was much, much worse. He ignored me.

He was almost happy to pretend I didn’t even exist. Of course there were situations that he couldn’t avoid socializing, as minimal as it was, but it was like he was talking to a wall. He looked at me like he was surprised that I was even there. He wouldn’t acknowledge me unless he was made to. He wouldn’t even correct me when I was wrong. At this point I was sure that I could be screaming bloody murder at him and he wouldn’t take his eyes off whatever he was doing.

It was the most frustrating and irritating thing that has ever happened to me. It made my blood boil over. It made me cry with sorrow.

And I couldn’t even figure out why. I didn’t know what it was that made me crazy because Spencer Reid wouldn’t look my way.

So I did what every angry and frustrated normal young adult does.

I went to a sex dungeon to drink my mixed feelings away and watch BDSM scenes. Duh.

Survivors guilt, Spencer had assured me multiple times, isn’t only a product of situations where someone else dies. And that was clear, because my roommate had lived, and I still felt terrible. Terrible that she had been the target of most of the monster’s rage.

I was the one who had called 911, and was surprised when I heard the sound of swiftly approaching sirens. I didn’t stay on the floor. Painfully and slowly, I tried to crawl through my concussed delirium to my friend.

Luckily, the FBI made it there first. A voice loudly announced their arrival, and I felt a wave of immense relief rush through me. The first person to make it through the door, however, wasn’t what I was expecting.

The first thing I noticed was that he wearing red converse high tops with mismatching socks. The second thing I noticed was how soft his hands were when they pushed my hair out of my face, helping me off the ground.

Maybe it was my damaged brain, or simply the adrenaline coursing through my veins, but this stranger wrapping his arms around me felt like home. The way he picked me up and carried me out of the building gave me the strength to breathe as he gently instructed me to.

Spencer had since then told me about transference, that I only liked him as a person now because he had been there to help me when I was in danger. But I didn’t remember anyone else from that night. I didn’t talk to any of them.

It was just him.

It was no surprise to me that (y/n) is flexible. I figured that fact out pretty quickly after she showed up at my door one night after the rest of the team fell asleep.

I learned a lot about her that night. Like how loud she screams my name when she squirms on my fingers, or how tightly she pulls my hair and how hard she digs her manicured fingers into my scalp when my face is buried between her thighs.

I loved these things about her. I just didn’t love the rest of the team learning about that side of her.

So when I heard the overjoyed, playful screaming from all the girls except my girlfriend, I was not excited to come back to the room. Call it intuition or just regular logic, it didn’t matter, because I knew what I would see.

Sure enough, after I found the courage to turn the corner I saw her straddling Garcia as the music blared in the background. I’d heard the song before, it was on the playlist (y/n) usually played when she was getting ready for a night out.

Except now, instead of dancing a private show for me in the bathroom or bedroom, she was grinding in a familiar pattern over our coworker. I hated myself for feeling both turned on and furious, because even if it wasn’t me under her, I couldn’t deny the way it made me feel.

“If you don’t know what I mean, you’re either blind or ungrateful.”

Fuck, she had to stop. He had to stop. I know he was drunk, but that was my fucking girlfriend.

Luckily, Rossi had caught on to what was happening from a few feet away, and he put an arm in front of me as I started to approach the women.

“Easy, kid. Let her live a little.”

The nonchalant manner he said it only pissed me off more. He just shrugged, like it was an inevitability that I should let a bunch of other people ogle my girlfriend. She was practically lighting a fucking “open for business” sign over her head.

“It’s humiliating.” I finally ground out, but the older man just chuckled, taking a drink of water as he turned around to leave.

“She’s not hurting anybody. As long as she’s still going home with you, just be glad you’re a very lucky man.”

Well, that certainly made it significantly worse.

He pat my back as he left, and I found myself stewing in the rage building in every atom of my being. Why the fuck did she think that was a good idea?

Was she thinking at all about me? I mean, fuck, I get she wanted to have fun, but she wasn’t the only person that was impacted by her stupid ass decisions.

This thing we had was relatively new, and I didn’t want to show her this side of me yet. But there I was, ready to drag her off Garcia and out the door to tell her exactly how I felt about it.

I wanted to slam her against the wall and remind her that I want her enough that she’ll never need to even look at another man again.  I needed to calm down, but all I could see was that look of feigned ecstasy on her face as she finally looked at me.

And that bitch fucking smiled. She thought it was so funny watching me struggling to remain composed while she played her body like a siren’s lyre. At that point all I knew that was that she better hope that I’ve calmed down by the time I get her alone.

Because I was not feeling nice.

Once Upon a Time…

That’s how these stories are supposed to start, right? It’s the stereotypical cautionary tale about little girls who get in over their heads. But for as long as I could remember, I’d prided myself on my ability to stay far away from danger. Not to say that I’m not like other girls - I’ve also always found that comparison juvenile.

All of this is just to say that normally, I wouldn’t concern myself with the traditional folklore about how little girls just can’t help but get in trouble. But this week it was Spirit Week at River Hill Elementary, and it was apparently my duty to teach the tale of Little Red Riding Hood. I mean, I guess it made sense, considering our mascot was a wolf. And to be fair, it was a much cuter costume than the three little pigs or Hansel and Gretel.

After the initial concern of having to find a Little Red Riding Hood costume that wasn’t intended for a college Halloween Party, I had actually started to get excited about the idea of dressing up and reading the fluffy, innocent rendition of Little Red that the school librarian could find.

That was, until the FBI showed up at my classroom door and I was literally dressed like a goddamn story time character. The initial embarrassment had quickly passed thanks to the comforting words of Agent Jareau, who was obviously a mother herself.

It was clear from the start that something very serious was going on, and I had my suspicions about which child it might concern. This was a heavy military family area, and many of my kids had parents who worked in defense. I wasn’t going to ask any questions; I didn’t want to know.

The only question I needed answered was whether or not we were safe. Agent Jareau had assured me that we were, and that we would have another agent assigned to my classroom for the time being. She had immediately sensed my hesitance, and once again attempted me to comfort me.

‘Dr. Reid is very good with kids. At least, my kids love him. He can even do magic.’

If she hadn’t seemed so genuine, I might’ve likened the way she talked about him to a used cars salesman giving an earnest pitch. But it was obvious that she trusted him, so I let the paranoid thoughts go. Before she’d left, she’d given me two very specific warnings: (1) He does not go by Agent, he goes by Doctor, and (2) do not let him hijack my class.

I’d laughed when she told me the second one, only to realize that she was decidedly not joking. If anything, though, that had actually comforted me more. I myself have a tendency to go on inappropriate rants, and so to know that someone else could be long winded and goofy was a relief.

Maybe he wouldn’t judge me as much, I’d thought. Maybe I could just go along with my normal daily routine and barely notice him in the back. Then in a few days, everything would go back to normal and I wouldn’t ever have to worry about how federal agents had seen me dressed up like Little Red Riding Hood and doing funny voices for a cartoon wolf.

At least, that was the hope. But as soon as Dr. Reid stepped through the door, I realized that I was utterly and completely fucked.

Spencer Reid was almost never late. For as long as Derek could remember, Reid had been on time nearly every day. But lately, he noticed his friend had been coming in five to ten minutes later than usual.

Today, however, Reid came into work thirty minutes late. That wasn’t all that was off about him today, though. In fact, it wasn’t even the most interesting thing.

He rushed into the conference room, practically falling over in his chair as he tried (and failed) to act like he hadn’t just burst into the room in the middle of JJ’s sentence.

Whatever she had to say was long forgotten now, though, as Emily leaned forward across the table, squinting at Reid who shifted uncomfortably in his seat.

“Hey, sorry I’m late.” He muttered, immediately recognizing that it wasn’t the real reason they were staring. Everyone’s eyes were flickering back and forth from his eyes to his neck until Emily finally voiced the question on everyone’s mind.

“Reid… Is that… a hickey?”

Spencer’s hand flew up to his neck, covering the mark on his neck with such remarkable precision that the action basically answered her question. He knew exactly where the mark was.

“Uh… No?”

“Hello, my name is (y/n)(y/l/n) and I’m calling from the Bank of America on K St. Northwest to report shots fired. The shots sounded like burst-fire from multiple semiautomatics.”

When adrenaline kicks in, there are a lot of things that don’t feel real. Time seems to warp into some ominous presence weighing down on you, but your body has never felt lighter.

“Ma’am, where are you?”

Her voice sounded so far away. My own just felt foreign, like it belonged to someone else entirely.

“I’m inside the bathroom. Listen, I might not have a lot of time. There’s a federal agent inside the bank. His name is SSA Dr. Spencer Reid with the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit. Call…”

My mouth blanked on the names of the two men Spencer talked about the most. I’d met them both, why couldn’t I remember?

Several more shots rang through the building as an answer. It was enough to shake loose the names, which flowed from me before I could even comprehend where they came from.

“Call SSA Aaron Hotchner and… Derek Morgan.”

“Can you remain on the line?” She sounded insistent — which is against their protocol by the way. My eyes were glued to the bathroom door’s hinges.

“Only until the door opens.”

The sentence conveyed my thoughts without actually forming the words. Once that door opens, I’m probably going to die. It wasn’t a completely irrational fear.

“Okay. I need you to remain calm. Did you see any of the gunmen?”

Jesus, it was like everything I’d just told her had gone completely over her head. “No, I’m in the bathroom.”

“Does the agent have his service weapon?”

“No.”

If she didn’t ask me a question I could say yes to soon, I was going to lose my fucking mind.

I tried not to think about Spencer outside, but I couldn’t help it. All of my thoughts were on him, even before the commotion.

Was he even still alive?

“Help is on the way, Ms. (Y/l/n).”

“Please hurry.”

My entire body shook from the hormones, my instincts telling me to do anything besides sit crouched on a toilet in a bathroom stall. I don’t even know why I bothered hiding. They would definitely kick them in, or just shoot straight through the doors.

“We’ve contacted Agent Hotchner and he’s also on his way.”

Finally, some good fucking news. I released my breath as quietly as I could, closing my eyes for just a moment to compensate for the fact I hadn’t blinked in several minutes.

“Thank you,” I whispered, clutching the phone like it could actually do something for me past this point. But it couldn’t. No amount of breathing exercises would help me through this one.

Suddenly, there was movement outside the door. A crowd of people were shuffling past the door, and I heard the distinct sound of a toddler wailing.

“I have to go.”

“Wait, don’t hang up—“

I couldn’t wait, though. With trembling hands, I erased the evidence that I’d ever called them in the first place. And then I resumed my position as a sitting duck; quietly and as ready as I ever could be.

I listened for his voice, but I never heard it.

— Spencer POV —

Although I’d been inside (Y/n)’s apartment several times now, I couldn’t say I’d ever actually looked much at my surroundings. It felt strange to admit that, mostly because I felt like I was doing something wrong; like I was a traitor to my job.

But then again, it felt worse to try to profile her. The few times I had made it obvious, she had made it very clear it was unappreciated. I could understand why.

So, before we even got to her door, I tried to quiet the voices screaming in my head, telling me to look for clues to all the unknowns about her. It wasn’t because I was expecting her to be hiding anything; I just wanted to know everything about her.

I could simply wait for her to tell me, though. We had all the time in the world, right?

“Laura, I’m home!” She called out immediately after breaching the entrance, following the exclamation with a very hurried request. “Spencer is here so please don’t be weird!”

The response was a calm, steady series of footfalls down the hall. The girl stuck her head around the corner, peeking at the two of us with a devilish grin.

“Pleasure to finally meet you, Dr. Reid.”

I told myself I probably shouldn’t be this nervous. If she was friends with (y/n), she was most likely a decent person. But let’s just say women around that age had never been particularly kind to me. They brought to the surface a lot of memories I’d tried very hard to bury.

She didn’t put her hand out to shake, which told me they’d already probably talked about me more than I’d have liked. ‘Wait,’ I thought to myself, ‘Is it okay to profile her roommate?’

“I’m going to go get a basket together. Wait in the living room, my kitchen is a disaster.”

Before I could argue, she had already disappeared, leaving me stranded in the hallway with her roommate who looked ready to cause trouble. I just hoped it wouldn’t the kind that revolved around me.

She waved a hand in front of her, motioning for me to make my way into the living room. Once we were there, she immediately took a seat, but I remained standing. Felt better to be able to escape.

The silence was awkward and suffocating. I could feel her staring at me, but she wasn’t saying anything. It felt wrong to look back.

“She says you read people for a living.” Her voice had a hint of skepticism in it I’d grown used to. “Sounds kind of like what psychics say.”

“Yeah, we use a lot of the same strategies, too. They just aren’t as honest about it as we are.”

“What do you see here?”

Biting the inside of my cheek, I realized he was in one of his stubborn moods. But that was fine.  I could deal with stubborn.

“Please?” I asked, only to receive another immediate “No.”

This time I put both of my hands in front of me, pressing my breasts together while I leaned over the table as I asked, “… Pretty please?”

That was enough to get him to finally lower his book, peeking across the table to see me staring at him with wide doe eyes and a coy smile.

“You’re very cute,” he said with an extremely brief smile, returning back to his book when he concluded, “Still no.”

“Come on!” I cried with a groan, “I promise I’ll behave.”

He laughed at that, idly flipping a page before speaking. “Oh, you do? You promise?”

“Yes!”

“Fine. Bring your homework,” he instructed, gesturing to me to come over without ever putting down his book.

I scrambled to collect everything, happily padding over to him and dumping my book, notepad, and pencils in front of him. Once I was there, though, he suddenly raised his hand to stop me.

“Take off your pants.”

With a raised eyebrow, I shifted my hip to the side to inspect his suspiciously calm, vague demeanor.

“Why?”

“Because I said so.”
