to me, the cruelest thing that eva stratt does is not the kidnappig itself. it's that she tells grace that he does not even have a dog. dr ryland grace, a man who dedicated his life to the greater good, first to science and then to teaching, does indeed not have a dog. and because of this, he has to spend his last precious moments on his home planet with the full knowledge that while he might be smart enough to save the world, he is not loved enough by anyone on it to be worth saving
I think people who interpret it this way are projecting some personal feelings a bit. To me it sounded more like she was saying Grace has no ties to his life on Earth. There’s no one here he would miss or feel like he abandoned. The book even proves this when Grace complains about having to save Earth because it gets in the way of his hobbies aka studying Eridina biology. He thinks that before he knows he was kidnapped so it’s not because he has soured on humanity, Eva was just right. He doesn’t miss anyone on Earth. He just didn’t want to go because he was a coward.
