Sitting on the dining room table, Chulo was in the middle of his homework. Papers half hazardously scattered around him as he attempts to complete his history homework.
Next to him was a sketchbook open with ideas for a new invention while Georgina sat nearby, drawing with her new crayons.
“It must be embarrassing needing a babysitter in high school,” she said out of nowhere. “How do you feel about that?”
Chulo was about to snip something back at her, when Esperanza stepped into the dining room. She was wearing her usual work uniform: navy blue overalls, a gray work shirt and brown wedge sole boots. Her black curls were up into a short ponytail with some of the hair strands sticking out in some corners.
“How do I look?” Esperanza asked her kids. “Nothing out of place, right?”
Georgina gave her mom a thumbs up. “Perfect, very nice.”
“Exactly, you’re the best dressed person at your job,” Chulo added, standing by Esperanza’s side. “In fact, I’m sure you’re the ‘most hard working mom in town’ they’ve ever been— No! In the whole wide world.”
Georgina blinked at her brother’s strange behavior, wondering if he was possessed. While Esperanza sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose. Already knowing Chulo’s intentions.
“I know what you’re doing.”
“Doing what mama?”
“Leonardo Valdez, I’m not canceling the babysitter.”
Hearing that, Chulo pouted. “Come on, mom pleasee.” The teen held his hands together, pleading.
“No, the last time I trusted you and Emilio to watch Georgie: I found her on the street covered in dirt, scared and crying!” Esperanza recalled.
Chulo grimaced. He and Guapo were rightfully scolded for hours after Georgina was calmed down and sent to bed.
“Look, I’m sorry for letting Georgie leave the house. We were too focused on our thing and got caught off guard. But I learned my lesson, so can you at least cancel the babysitter. I’ll pay more attention to Georgie this time.”
Esperanza sighed and shook her head, “No te mentes. You could have been paying attention to your sister this whole time. Why does it have to be me getting mad at you for you to listen? Eh?”
“N-no, it’s no uhm–it’s not like that–” Chulo tried to defend himself, his throat becoming sore.
“Why couldn’t you just be responsible? How many times did we have this conversation?”
Chulo clenched his shirt. “I know. I’m sorry.”
Seeing his dejected face, Esperanza sighed. “You’re 15 years old, Chulo. I know you’re a smart boy, and I know you can be responsible. Until I can trust you to watch Georgie, Breisa will be watching over you two. You understand?” She said, crossing her arms.
Chulo shook his head, avoiding his mom’s stare. “I understand.”
With that Esperanza returned back to her bedroom muttering something about needing a headband. Both the kids were left alone in the dining room. The air reeked with anger, guilt and regret.
Wanting some space, Chulo began to pack his stuff and planned on locking himself in his room until the babysitter’s gone. Meanwhile, Georgina had gotten her hands on the remote and once again played Dusk on the tv.
Just then, the home phone’s ringtone echoed through the living room. Spooking the kids.
“Can someone answer the phone!” Esperanza called out from her room.
“Okay!” Georgina replied back before going, “Chulo, the phone!”
“Can’t you get it?” The older brother gestures to the table sitting near the couch. “You’re closer."
But the girl didn’t move an inch. “Sorry! Can’t hear you! Tv’s on!”
Scowling at his sister’s smug face, Chulo cursed underneath his breath while walking towards the persisting ringing phone. Chulo groaned and answered, saying, “What do you want?”
“Wow, such a hospitable customer you are.” An annoying teasing voice drew out.
Chulo, recognizing his brother, remarked “I’m gonna hang up on you.”
“No wait! I only got 5 minutes left on my break.” He hissed in a hushed voice. “Is mom still home? Can you let her know I’m heading over after my shift?”
Chulo paused, unsure if he should see his mom right now after the argument. Or if he wanted to really. “Yeah, I’ll.. I’ll let her know you’re coming over.”
“Sweet!” Guapo exclaimed, unaware of his brother's hesitance, “So… is Breisa there yet?”
Chulo rolled his eyes. Of course he’d ask that. “Are you seriously still stuck on her?” Chulo scrunched his nose. “Dude, she doesn’t even like you!”
“She hasn’t seen the real me!” Guapo said defensively. Probably pointing at thin air. “I can definitely melt her icy heart. You’ll see. Time and patience are the most important tools when wooing a lady.”
“What the fuck kind of fantasy are you living in? She basically rejected you when you tried to ask her out.” Chulo scoffed at his brother's high ego.
Guapo dismissally ignored his younger brother. “Details. Details. They don’t mean anything. Come on man, I need you to vouch for me.”
“Okay, what about the fact you embarrassed me in front of Mara? The literal girl of my dreams?” Chulo added. “Because of your terrible flirting tactic, I’m sure she thinks I’m a loser now and won’t talk to me again.”
“I don’t know. She seemed pretty interested in you.” Guapo had that teasing tilt in his voice. “Even remembered what you looked like.”
“Oh lucky me, they knew my face but not my name. That makes things so much better.” Chulo deadpanned, despite his blushing face.
“Oh yeah. I think I actually told her your name.” Guapo shrugged off handily. “Don’t know if she’ll even remember it–”
“WAIT SHE KNOWS MY NAME!?” Chulo cried out with a voice crack.
“Ow!” Guapo winced. “Ear to the phone, Chulo! Tone control, man! You still squeak like a mouse!”
“I do not!” He retorted, voice still squeaky sounding.
As Guapo and Chulo began to bicker for the umpteenth time today, Georgie drowned out their fight by turning up the volume of her movie. “You killed my bff!”
“Can you guys please be quiet!” Georgina huffed, turning to Abby. “Boys. Don’t they know it’s about to get good?”
Happy Birthday to my favorite character, Leo Valdez 🎉🎉🎉🥳

I feel like were missing some real. Dramatic. Bawling your eyes out worthy angst fic for when leos back alive after "dying"...
Like sure theres a lot but ong they dont feel realistic to me (NO HATE-]
I feel like the writers are definitely onto cooking but they just cant emphasize with that properly maybe??? I mean holy shit thats such an insane situation already.
Like seeing this guy you were very much sorta -kinda -almost -maybe- a little- in love with- die and come back like that...
I personally would go into severe shock after being in crazy denial all this time yknow. He was supposed to be dead, his funeral brought that realisation within us, and then we slowly are only beginning to understand that he's not fkin coming back
But suddenly hes here and that too with the girl that cursed Annabetg. Thats all we know about calypso firsthand.
Personally I would make my character not talk to him. Like ignore his ass. Its immature but thats the only way it makes sense- it would also make sense for piper n jason to be mad as fuck too.(repeat after me- Jason- Grace- is NOT dead. Jason Grace- is NOT dead- he's SO alive gng istg. HE'S THRiving. I dont fucking care what canon is. He's SO alive . PLEASE INCLUDE THAT. PLEASE)
Back to reader, i imagine that I personally would be more heartbroken and pissed than anything. Like my blood would boil if I see him. And its not even about calypso. Its just that he never fkin bothered to let any of us know just cause 'we wouldnt get it'. I'm pissed cause in my head this feels like the cruelest fucking prank ever- and forsho Leo is the typa guy to act like that like this shit is normal-he himself hasnt had the time or energy to process his emotions about escaping death like this- cause right after - hes thrown to ogygia. And from then on his thoughts are continuously 'Calypso Calypso Calypso Calypso-'
I feel like [forget about rick for a sec forget about trials of Apollo im sorry for the fans 🙏🏼] piper would sucker punch him n shit the way yk Annabeth threw percy over his ass lmfao. Shed do sum like that. And then yell his ears off. In front of everyone
Cause i genuinely need the bro sis relationship interaction bw these two like be fr. BE FR. My shaylas...
And like her voice would go hoarse n shit. And only then would Leo realise how much this has affected everyone.
Percy Jason and others however i think wouldnt have sucj an inte nse reaction..but they would jump his ass. Hug him so tight his air supply is blocked. And THEN starts the part where everyone lines up to slap him.
[Look, Valgrace shippers- yall can deffo switch Piper w Jason and have him fight Leo like hell, but in a romantic way.👀]
But cause im talking abt an x reader here, I would make my character ignore him. Cause if you sit there and realise how intense and insane this whole thing is, you're actually gonna end up feeling so frustrated and angry [I have cried multiple times thinking about just this. Like Leo as a character has so much potential with intense relationships but ahh..ya'll brush him off as the class clown. ]
I would have my chara ignore him and he would fkin suffer from it. Realistically again-to not be dramatic, again- this would be intense- I would have my character go up and congratulate him on making it out alive and rescuing Calypso, the way any normal camper would.
But the problem is of course, as the reader you're supposed to have had such a serious connection with him-you are NOT a nobody to him.- why are you acting as if you barely knew him?
He would suffer from it cause Leo is like the epitome of 'tell me whats wrong I'll fix it even if it ain't my fault'
Add that to Calypso being abusive and lowering his self confidence. On one hand hes being forced to admit that his first love might not last forever, on the other -his best friend is acting like a total fkin stranger. Hed suffer so much
You on the other hand suffering just as much but through anger and resentment, you hate him cause you're beginning to realise how heavily attached you are to him and its just not okay cause hes got a gf for one, for two you have no idea if he ever cared about you.
@rara-is-weird there is a Level of angst I am willing to go. That the horrors of it is so terribly good. @nyxdreamweaver as one of my mutuals and writing partners has bared the burn of this angst. This— your concept is beautiful, angsty, very much like using Leo as a squeaky toy.
(I.E:
But in my own writing i don’t want to spoil too much…cause I will get into it. I’m just gonna say from my twisted mind of my fanfic:
For Leo and his lover — reader/my oc— to have their happy ending. I make them go through their own tartarus of feelings, resentment, and acceptance before they get together. Like the bar is in hell and comes back. Their own painful decisions within the story is what builds this up. And without Calypso because I can not do my girl dirty like Rick did her. But She not innocent…she has her own thing.
Somehow they managed to fly through the day. Rewarding himself with a stolen juice box from the cafeteria, Guapo drank. Slurping almost obnoxiously. He flipped through his phone.
“Dude—“ Chulo grumbled, annoyed.
“Hey look, they found the remains of those two seniors.” Guapo held his phone out. Shoving the news article in his brother’s face. “Shriveled up like this juice box.” He clamped his fist around the juice box and squeezed. Eyes looking crazed. “How cool is that?”
But Chulo didn’t share his enthusiasm. Looking disturbed. “That's really creepy.” He shivered. Trying to keep his mind off the body bags on the phone. Chulo glanced to the side, catching pieces of an argument. A lethal squabbling between a pair of lovebirds. “Speaking of creepy. Looks like your ‘future wife’ is snuggling up with one of the drama club boys.”
Guapo, confused, tilted his head up and over. There stood Chris Rodriguez in the distance. His arm over Breisa. Looking smug as ever. She looked like she wanted the ground to swallow her whole. Maybe even cave underneath his feet.
Their conversation floated around.
“You’re trying to be sweet on me.” She might have said. “And I don’t know why you think that will work on me. I told you we were through. I never want to see you."
“Bree, Bree,” Chris pouted, arms coming to her sides.
She slapped his hand away. “I don’t want anything to do with you. We are over. So stop following me.” She walked away, hugging herself and rubbing her elbows.
“You know you can’t walk away from me.” Chris remarked, very sure of himself. “You think I don’t know you? You’re too easy, Bree. You get into one of your little moods. All hot and then cold. You just need my attention. An act, with crocodile tears. You always come running back to my side. Begging for me again. My loyal little girlfriend. If it barks, right Bree?!”
Their bickering had caught the attention of the goth posse and everyone else around them. Everyone was intrigued by the drama unfolding in front of their eyes. They’re even placing bets on what’ll happen next.
“Christopher—” Breisa was livid, ready to tear into him. But from the corner of her eye, Mara and Elina were skipping down to the open quad. More of Elina skipping than Mara’s who was pace waking.
“Bree. There you are!” Mara got in-between Breisa and Chris. She pulled Breisa behind her and whispered, “You okay? I could kick this pest in the groin.”
Chris scoffed. “Look, I’m in the middle of talking with Bree. So why don’t you fuck off somewhere and leave us be. You got that sweetheart?”
But Mara didn’t back down from Chris’s threats or his condensing tone. Even more irritated at the audacity.
“No. listen here dipshit. You better leave Bree alone or else I’ll break your stupid face.” She slid off her dark mesh cardigan and cracked her knuckles. “Is she serious?” Chris guffawed in disbelief. What was this freshman gonna do?
Breisa grabbed hold of her friend’s shoulder. “Mara. Let’s not waste anymore time on trash.”
“Can’t you guys work it out?” Elina innocently smiled. “Like Rochelle and Jakeward did in book 2.” Cause of course now was the time for her fangirl bullshit.
Hearing that, Chris turned his head. Very interested in Elina. “That Vampire movie, you’re a fan right?”
“Yes!” Elina squealed, stuck in her own little bubble. “I live, breathe, and drink Dusk. Do you like it too—“
“We’re leaving.” Breisa grabbed her friend's hands. Pulling with her. Desperate to get away before–
“Woah, woah, where are you going?” Fuck.
Luke suddenly spoke up, now appearing onto the scene with his gothlings in tow. The drama kids towered over the girls. Luke’s beady eyes zeroed in on Mara.
Breisa glared, fully guarded. “Away from you.”
“What?” Chris scoffed, crossing his arms. “Just when the conversation was just getting interesting?”
“You know that movie? So do I.” Luke added on. “I like drama. It’s something I can relate to.”
The other drama kids snickered at that. Some sort of inside joke? Who knows.
“You guys like Dusk too!?” Elina's eyes lit up like fireworks. “Yes! You should totally come for the fan screening. Not to hype it up so much but it's to die for.” Elina twirled her hair, enjoying the attention. Drowning in it.
“Of course,” Luke gave the brunette a charming smile. “We wouldn't miss it for the whole wide world.” His attention shifted towards Mara. “How about you? Do you like vampires?” The question sounded innocent…but the way he asked was so ominous.
“There's something off about those drama boys,” Chulo muttered mostly to himself. But Guapo nodded along, sipping on the last of his juice. “I just know it.”
“Hey Guapo!” Conner appeared behind the Valdez boys.
They jumped in unison, he spooked them like two alley cats. “You didn’t forget? You owe me a brand new comic~”
He scrunched his nose. “How could I forget that? You already reminded me seven times.”
“Just making sure I'm getting my end of the deal,” Conner replied. “Remember, chicken.” Then he cluck mockingly.
Guapo groaned. “You’re probably gonna pawn it and not even get the chance to appreciate true artistry.”
“Well now it's my comic now, and I can do whatever I want with it—“ Connor argued.
“Can you guys shut up!” Chulo huffed at their bickering. Looking back at his crush being talked to by Luke. “I’m trying to listen.”
Mara twiddled with their eccentric rings. Feeling uncomfortable from the intense staring, but rambling, “I mean–I do find them a bit fascinating. Their mythology is cool and interesting to read about. And pretty tragic in some cases.”
“That's great to hear because,” Luke stood way too close for comfort. “I’m quite knowledgeable in vampire folklore. An expert really. So how about we–”
“I'm sorry!" Breisa cut off. “But we have some plans now so excuse us.” Finally breaking free from the conversation, Breisa took her friends away from the creepy drama boys, much to Elina's annoyance.
“We'll see you around!" Elina yelled back. “Dusk forever!”
At the same time, Mara flipped off Chris. Still pissed at the jock.
Chris growled curses underneath at Breisa, but Luke merely smiled.
“Don’t worry boys,” he announced to his group. “There's always next time. Always a way to separate the chicks from the mother hen.” The guy then walked off, his coat seemingly blowing in the wind as he and the drama teens left the scene.
“Eugh!” Breisa gagged and shivered with disgust. “Promise me you’ll stay away from them. Those creeps are nothing but trouble.”
Elina rolled her eyes but with Mara jabbing her in the side, she stopped.
“We promise.” The two sophomores answered in unison.
Breisa was satisfied with that. “Good.”
She, Elina, and Mara walked past the geeks. Barely acknowledging them. A waft of jasmine and sugary coconut breezed past the boys.
Almost in a trance, Chulo and Guapo sighed like lovesick fools. Conner also sighed, but at his friends’ delusional behaviours.
“I’m so ditching the night shift for her.” Guapo's eyes followed the stomp of Breisa’s walk.
“Great, that means I'll be getting my pizza earlier.” Chulo grinned smugly at him.
“And my comic!” Connor added pushing up his glasses.
“No!” The brothers simultaneously snapped.
Out of nowhere a car engine reeved and swerved near them. The three jumped at the loud ass car horn.
“WATCH IT NERDS!” Chris Rodriguez cackled.
The three geeks stumbled back, falling off the curb, and landing on the grass. Coughing from the car’s engine exhaust as the bullies sped off.
“Those guys really suck.” Guapo groaned, letting his head thunk on the grass.
“You think if I hobble I can get insurance fraud?” Connor remarked.

Unlike Breisa's unfortunate demise of sloppy Joe, more people seemed to enjoy the lunch period.
A nerdy girl floated in daydream land, watching the movie Dusk on her phone. It was pretty obvious she was a Dusk fan. Or Dusker. It wasn’t on the account of her glasses or her wavy brunette hair. More on the fact where she was seated were numerous movie posters of the hottest vampire movie. A booth to sell tickets to the fanclub screening. Two weeks from the world wide theatrical release.
“I'm AB positive you will be mine.” The vampire guy whispered seductively while stroking the main lead’s cheek. ”Drinking your hemoglobin may be a crime… ...but our love will sparkle for all time.”
Her eyes were mostly glued to her phone— Until she recognized two familiar passers. “Mara! Breisa! Wait up!” She rushed from her table to catch up with them. “Where have you two been? I've been texting you all morning– Oh! What happened to your shirt? And your boots?”
“Ugh. Don't ask.” Breisa scowled, scrubbing a wet towel on her shirt. “Some dorky clutz caused this mess.”
“Never mind.” Elina fixed her glasses, sitting down with them at their usual lunch spot. “Guess what?”
“Is the school library finally getting new books!?” Mara asked, dropping their spoon into pudding. “I’ve been waiting for the fourth and fifth book of Amulet to arrive for AGES!”
“What, no. We finally sold over 200 tickets to the Dusk fan screening! Eeek!” Elina cheered, while Mara’s mood plummeted fifty stories.
“Oh. The new Dusk movie, right.” The goth said with a deadpan tone. “Of course.”
“Ughh, only seven more days left. I seriously think if I had to wait any longer, I’d go insane.” Elina continued on.
“Yeah. Me too…” Mara rolled their eyes and muttered, “I’m already going insane just listening to this crap...”
Elina turned around with a confused look. “What did you say?”
Panicking, Mara awkwardly waved her hands around. “Nothing! Nothing important.”
Elina raised an eyebrow from Mara's peculiar reaction, but didn’t press further. Breisa just sighed at the two’s oblivious nature.
“I still don’t understand why you like that trashy flick.” Breisa rolling her eyes. She was more of a Dusk book fan. If she read through the last book. It wasn’t too bad. Kind of absurd and ironic. “And I thought your club was a film club?”
Elina gave Breisa a side eye before saying, “It is! Well, a lot of new members that joined are fans of Dusk so now it’s a Dusker fan club. But I’m not complaining.”
Elina squealed, stuck in her usual fangirl fantasy twirling her hair and everything. “And so what? The Dusk movies is the best adaptation of Melody Reyers's work. I'm the #1 Jakeward fan! He’s so hot and I can’t wait to see if he’ll bite Rochelle in the third movie. I hope he does because–”
As the nerdy girl went on a rant on why Jakeward is awesome, Mara’s eyebrow twitched in annoyance from the conversation. She… isn't the biggest fan of that vampire franchise. You can even call her ‘a Dusk critic.’ They tried to like it, even reading the books but Mara couldn't muster a full chapter without being tempted to rip out its pages. Like the series is a total disservice to vampires as a whole and very creepy–like why is an ancient vampire preying on some high school girl!?
And it couldn't get any worse, since the whole school was riddled with Vamp-fever thanks to the announcement of the third movie. There were almost a thousand posters of that shitty glam movie plastered within the building. Hell–there were even posters in the bathroom! It's like the universe hates them or decided to punish Mara from a previous life.
“If they had any sense she would go for the werewolf. Like in the book.” Breisa stabbed her waxy mac n cheese. Picking at it but not really eating. “He’s way better for Rochelle than that blood sucking roach.”
Elina scoffs, setting aside her terrible lunch. “No way, Rochelle is totally picking Jakeward. He’s ten times cooler than that basic and weird Joseph. He's the reason Rochelle was safe from the council hunting her down and he promised to protect her and her only. Plus: Jakewards sparkles.”
“He sparkles? Wowww,” Mara remarked bitterly, eyes burning holes at her lunch so hard it might explode. “Totally the epitome of a man.”
“See! Mar-mar gets it!” The nerd cheered while all Mara wanted to do is punch the author that caused their misery in the first place.
‘The things I do for love,’ Mara stared at an animated Elina going on and on about their upcoming plans. There was something admirable and cute about the brunette's passion for her interests. Not to mention the way her glasses sat on her nose above her rosy lips.
Mara was so lost in thought, she was unaware that she was being ogled by a scrawny looking sophomore right across the cafeteria.
Chulo couldn’t take his eyes off of Mara. How could he not? Look at them! Their gothic style, that cute smile, and the way her curls cascade down their shoulders? She was drop dead gorgeous.
“Uh oh,” Conner spoke up. “Chulo’s stuck in ‘La la land’ again.”
“Don’t tell me he’s creeping on that girl again.” Guapo remarked, tweaking with his DNA goggles.
“Dude, look at him. He’s got giant heart eyes and everything.” Conner poked Chulo’s face repeatedly until he broke out of his love trance. “He lives!”
“Stop that!” Chulo swatted away Conner’s hands. “And I wasn’t ogling at Mara.”
Conner and Guapo shared a look that said, Yes you were.
Chulo sighed in defeat. “Fine. Are you happy now? She’s just so cool, smart and pretty. They kick ass and dress like a mistress of darkness. And she likes horror movies too. She’s my dream girl… the Princess Leia to my Hans Solo." During his sappy spiel, He splayed a dopey grin as his cheeks were burned red.
Both Conner and Guapo stared at him before bursting into a fit of laughter. Ticking off Chulo.
“Guys seriously?” The sophomore said. “I just poured out my heart and soul to you two and you just stomped all over it.”
“First off you ain’t no Han Solo.” Guapo snorted. “I’m Han Solo, you’re more like Jar-Jar binks.”
“Hey!” Chulo pouted offended.
“And second off, pour your heart and soul?” Guapo asked incredulously. “What're you in love with this girl?”
“Yes!... maybe…well.” Chulo pulled on his hoodie string to hide himself. “I'm not exactly sure but I know it isn’t just a crush. I just feel this connection with her, you know.”
Guapo tried not to laugh. He really tried not to. “Baby bro. You have no idea what love is. You see a pretty girl and swoon. You probably haven’t even talked to her. How do you know there is something more? Have you even tried to ask her out?”
Chulo deadpanned at his brother. “You’re the biggest hypocrite here. I don’t see you asking out that girl you were making goo-goo eyes at. Especially after you dumped sloppy Joe mush all over her. At least, I’ve talked with Mara before. At their aunt’s antique shop— we talked! Just haven't reached the ‘asking out’ phase yet.”
“Ahh, yes. The best way to wormed into a girl's heart is chatting about furniture and antiques.” Guapo made a loud snoring noise while Conner chuckled.
“Actually we talk more about books and jewelry.” Chulo corrected. Which didn’t help with his case.
“Oh so much better.” Connor snorted, wrapping his arms over Chulo’s shoulders. “Tell me, Chulo. You think talking about musty books and grandma jewelry is gonna get you far?”
Guapo scoffed, “You have no class, cochino.” Flicking Connor on the forehead.
“And you do?” Chulo rolled his eyes. “You may be older, bro. But you are just as bad as us. Tasteless, classless, and cochino.”
“For real.” Connor nodded. “How long has it been since you actually had a date?”
Guapo opened his mouth to answer—
“Bullshit,” Chulo snorted, “Since when do you date?!”
Guapo scratched his neck and oddly focused on the DNA goggles. “Is it so hard to believe your brother has game?”
“Yes.” Chulo and Conner spoke in unison.
Guapo raised the middle finger to them. And then flinching and shaking out his wrist. Shocking himself with his own creation.
“Go fuck yourselves.” Guapo grumbled. “I have game. Game recognizes game.”
“Oh really?” Conner cheekily asked with one brow raised. Anyone that’s hung around this prankster long enough would know his trademark I have an idea face. “Well let’s put that to the test then.”
Connor tilted his head towards the girl table. Breisa and Elina were getting into a heated debate about Dusk. All while Mara banged her head against the cafeteria table. Her face was as dead as a corpse.
“I dare you to go ask Breisa out right now. If she says yes, we’ll give you 20 bucks each,”
The odds of free money, Guapo grinned. The odds of his brother's luck, Chulo frowned.
Conner continued on, “But. If you fail or chicken out. You’ll have to… hand over your limited edition issue of X-Men #1 to moi. And whatever free pass Chulo wants as your baby brother.”
“Ha!” His brother laughed, “I agree to those terms. You know I've been craving a pizza. Considering you never bring us any from work.”
The wide grin on Guapo’s face wiped away in an instant. “Fuck you. I worked my ass off to get that copy– and you have eaten my left overs before. I ain’t doing it.”
But Conner rolled his eyes. “Well then. I guess you’re admitting that you get no play. And that you’re a big fat chicken.”
Connor smirked like the Cheshire Cat while the chickens' glare burned holes at him.
“Bwah–I am NOT a chicken.” He clucked defensively.
Conner dismissively waved his hand. “Yeah, yeah, whatever chicken. Bwak, bwak, bwak.” He squawked chicken noises and flapped his arms. Even Chulo also joined in on the shenanigans.
Trying to shove his own annoyance away, Guapo focused on his goggles. But they kept flapping his wings…getting louder and louder with the clucking sounds. The annoyance boiled in Guapo, until he snapped. “That’s it! You two better get your wallets ready cause Emilio ‘Guapo’ Valdez is about to score a date.” Cracking his knuckles and smoothing down his curls, Guapo made his way over to the girl’s table. With all the confidence he could muster.
“...And the way Jakeward protects Rochelle from his enemies by climbing onto the trees to escape them,” Elina went on about a scene from Dusk. “Aah! I almost died right then and there. What a guy…”
“Speaking of guys..” Mara cut in, focusing her attention on Breisa. “I heard what happened between you and Chris. You finally broke things off?”
“Yep.” Breisa bluntly said. “He tried to talk his way out of it. And I talked my way back to it. Even flipped him off.”
“Woof,” Mara said. “What a piece of work. Chris is such an asshole like he was treating you like shit and for what? At least you aren’t dating him anymore.”
Mara patted Breisa's shoulder, comforting her friend. “And there are plenty of fish out in the sea. Who needs him?”
“Man, I kinda wish I had a cute boyfriend now.” Elina sighed dreamily. “I'd totally have fun. Going out on dates, making out, and even skipping class to hang.”
Breisa and Mara gave her a look. Was that the best timing to bring that up?
“What? I would!” Elina said defensively.
“Elina it’s not about what you do,” Breisa said. “Boys are stupid, ungrateful, and pesky mocosos. I swear to god, if I gotta deal with another immature boy again.” She stabbed at her Mac n cheese.
“Hello ladies~” A boy smiled, teeth full of silver brackets. Curls ‘slicked’ back.
God wants to kill me. Breisa thought in her head. She glared at the geek in front of her.
He stood there, waiting for something.
Breisa, impatient as ever, asked. “You got a staring problem, dork?”
It seemed like his confidence was faltering. His curls sprung in front of his face, his smile became nervous, and he blushed from his ears up.
“Uh— well—“ He stammered. Losing track of his words.
Oh no he’s cute.
“Uh well. Speak, geek boy.” Breisa snared at him.
“He’s crashing and burning!” Connor ‘whispered’ to Chulo.
“I know. That pizza is mine.” He muttered back.
Just then, Mara intervened into the conversation, giving Guapo a tiny grin. “Hi there.” They held out their gloved hand towards Guapo–who hesitantly shook it. “The name's Mara. What's yours? You look… familiar.” They squinted her eyes to get a better look at the stranger.
“Oh yeah…I get compared to my brother all the time.” Guapo quickly latched onto that. Sitting down near Mara. “I actually came over… Because I think one of you ladies is babysitting my brother tonight. I wanted to be sure, cause I usually help out my mom. But you know, I got work tonight so I can’t. I wanted to make sure my siblings were in good hands?”
He looked around the table hoping they bought it.
“Awh, that's sweet of you," Mara cooed. “But I don’t have a babysitting gig tonight.”
“Me either. Got some plans.” Elina said.
Breisa stood quiet. Eying him up and down. “They wouldn’t happen to have the last name, Valdez.”
“…Your mom named you guys Leo and Leo?” Breisa asked incredulously.
Emilio laughed, “Ah well, technically yes. But I go by Milo or Guapo. And he goes by Leo or Chulo. He’s actually right over there.” He pointed out his brother. Not realizing he was pointing out his brother to his crush.
At the same side, Chulo grimaced at his questionable lunch and glanced up. His face paled when he locked eyes with the girl of his dreams. He ducked behind his hand. “Dude, why is Mara looking at me?” He whispered to Conner.
The freckled teen shrugged. “No clue.”
“Wait a minute….” Mara trailed off, staring at Chulo's hidden figure. “Isn't that Hoodie guy!? No way! I never knew you two were related.”
“Yeah he’s right there,” Guapo looked at his brother, avoiding their stares. “Well he’s a bit shy. But he’s a sweetheart.” He gave a glance at Breisa. “Like his older brother. If you give him a chance.”
Unimpressed, Breisa said, “Oh no yeah sure. Good thing that’s tonight. Not right now.”
“Yeah,” Guapo grit his teeth. Jeeze was this girl made of ice. “We’ll see you around.”
Struck out, he thought to himself as he walked back to the table. There waiting for Guapo was an embarrassed Chulo and a smug Conner.
“So….” Conner grinned. “When can I expect to receive my new comic?”
Guapo grind his teeth. “How's tonight?”
“Very suitable,” The trickster accepted the date. “How about you Chulo? Are you ready for your prize?”
“Yep.” Chulo replied, glaring daggers at his brother. “You so owe me a pizza for going through that torture. Now Mara knows I'm being babysitted at fifteen years old.” He dramatically collapsed onto the lunch table, groaning in pain.
“Big woop,” Guapo waved his hand. “But hey, at least she recognized you. You're her Hoodie guy.”
“Yay…” Chulo dejectedly did jazz hands. “They know me as not only ‘Hoodie Guy’ but as ‘The dork that still needs a babysitter’ So embarrassing…”
“I'm embarrassed for you. Especially since you're gonna be babysat by a Dusker fan.” Conner added on. “Diehard fans of Dusk are so lame.”
“Not as lame as those pajamas you wear to sleep,” Guapo retorted. “Really? Starship Enterprise jammies?”
“At least Starship is ten times cooler than that fairytale gunk everyone's obsessed over.”
Guapo nodded his head like he was a wise old sage. “True, true, but if fairytales are what gets me my future wife— then I’m getting my Prince Charming on!” He smiled, his determination reanimated.
“And he says I don't know what love is.” Chulo muttered to himself.
Letting lunch fly as Guapo schemed to melt the ice queen's heart.

It was an agonizing long morning period, until finally lunchtime. Where chaos of conformity, chisme, and angst reigned. Every student was in motion, chatting with friends, sneaking into the lunch line to avoid waiting, the usual.
Grabbing his plastic lunch tray, Chulo jumped into the lunch line behind Guapo. Grilling his older brother about his plans to shoot them up the social ladder.
“Milo, this is it,” He said. “Our whole social lives depend on how we behave for the next few days. So–” he turned to Guapo who was tinkering on a pair of goggles. Right in the middle of the freakin cafeteria.
“What do you think?” Guapo grinned, proudly showing off his latest invention. But Chulo wasn't impressed.
“Really?” He huffed, reaching for geeky goggles— but Guapo held them above his head.
“Don't break them! These bad boys are state of the art alien DNA detector goggles. Been wanting to test them out and what better place to do that than the school cafeteria.”
Chulo didn't know what he wanted to do: smack his face or his brother's. “Yeah, totally the perfect spot,” he sarcastically snipped, grabbing the sticky mac n’ cheese spoon and dumping it onto his tray. “And the perfect place to get us branded as dorks for another year!”
His complaints fell on deaf ears with Guapo putting the final touches on the geeky glasses.
“Just hand them over,” Chulo held out his hands.
But Guapo chose to wear it–strapping them to around in his curls–daring his brother to take it away. “No!”
Chulo frowned from his brother's stubbornness. Of course this asshole wouldn't make things easy.
“Look, you promise to be cool?” He asked.
“Okay, I will–”
“Hey guys!” Another voice chimed in.
Chulo internally groaned. Both brothers turned their heads to see Conner Stoll in the front of the line, paying for his meal.
“No way…” Chulo grumbled mumbled.
However, Guapo ecstatically waved at their friend. Dragging his brother over to Connor.
“Heyyy, there’s my favorite conman!” He greeted, fist bumping him. “How’ve you been? Haven't seen ya much ‘er the summer, what gives?”
“Oh you know–the usual. Opening business ventures, working on my new channel, filling Travis's socks with tooth paste,” The sophomore listed off things he did over the summer.
“And what’s with the glasses?” Chulo pointed to Connor. The black rimmed glasses on the freckled nose.
“Oh these? Apparently my eyesight has gotten ‘worse’ over the years so now I have to wear these.” Conner explained, frowning. “It’s such a pain. Keeps pinching my nose but it is what it is.”
“If it makes you feel better, you look cooler than this dork.” Chulo jabbed his thumb towards Guapo, who’s still wearing the goggles as a headband.
Conner grinned, his gap tooth showing. “Speaking of dorks. I'm kickstarting a new gig that'll totally make me a rich man. And I'm inviting you lucky fellows to join me.” Wrapping his arms over each of their shoulders. Guapo looked interested while Chulo tried to ignore it. Even so, he was a bit curious about what he was scheming.
Conner cleared his throat for dramatic effect. “I'm thinking: since you two are mega geniuses. We could hack into the teacher's computers for test answers, copy off onto a blank piece of paper and sell them to the student body by passing them off as ‘study guides’” He said, making air quotes. “We'll be set for life! What do you guys think?”
Connor was explaining how it was the best idea he had yet. There’s no way they would ever reject it–
“That's the worst idea you had yet.” Chulo said, breaking out from Conner's arms. “I'm out.”
“What? Traitor!” He exclaimed, then turned to Guapo's side. “You agree with my idea, right?”
But Guapo shook his head. “Sorry man, I ain't getting wrapped up in any trouble,” He explained, ignoring Conner's protests. “Every time you have these schemes–”
“Business ventures!” The ticked off sophomore corrected.
“Fine–‘business ventures’–something always goes wrong and you get detention. You almost got suspended from your last one.”
But Conner brushed away the concerns. “Pff, suspended, mended. I swear this time, this one is legit.”
“Yeah right, and you'll end up just like Jordan from chem who creeps around the town and sells rank ass weed.”
“Shut up, no I won't.”
“Yes you will.”
“No!”
“Yes!”
“No!”
“Yes!”
Soon, Guapo and Conner were petty squabbling.
Chulo wasn’t having it anymore. Don't these idiots understand his need to be respected here? Their social lives are at stake here!
“Ugh… Okay, that's it!” He interrupted the two boys bickering. Reaching his boiling point. “I need to get the hell away from you two or else I'm doomed to be wedgied forever.” Quick to ditch his friends, Chulo headed towards an empty table.
“Chulo wait up!” Guapo called out, chasing after his brother. His attention focused on the fuming Chulo, he hadn’t noticed two goths—
“Ack!” THWAP
He crashed into one of the girls. She wobbled for a minute. Until the other girl, the taller one, grabbed onto her arm and yanked her up.
But it didn’t save her from Guapo's sloppy Joe flying all over her new blouse and combat boots.
“Oh shit-” Guapo muttered.
She turned to face the catalyst of her ruined clothes.
“Thanks a lot, dork!” The girl spat out.
Mara asked, “Breisa, You okay?”
She sighed just waving her hand. “I'm fine, Mara. I’m fine. But my clothes are trashed. Let's go.”
Mara grimaced.
Breisa glared back at Guapo. Waiting for an apology or something. But he just gawked with chills down his spine.
“Pendejo.” She snapped. And walked off with Mara, leaving Guapo stunned and alone. Almost alone.
“Damn,” Conner suddenly appeared by his side. “What a gal, huh? The short one looked like she was six seconds away from tearing you into shreds.”
“Exactly,” Guapo whispered, dazed. You could see the tiny winged hearts floating around his head. He pushed up the goggles to glance at Breisa's shrinking figure. “What a woman…”
Conner raised his brow, glancing over to Chulo for help.
He only shrugged meekly.
“He's always like that,” Chulo replied, grabbing onto his brother's arm. He pulled the lovesick fool to the side. “Come on, let's hurry and save our remaining dignity before the teachers catch us. We’ll be scrubbing with toothbrushes.”
Realizing, Conner scrambled over to Chulo's side and followed his friends towards the lunch tables.

At school everyone seemed to be in a chipper mood. Despite Chulo’s misery. All of them raving and ranting over the hottest flick out right now. Dusk: A long time beloved vampire book series into a movie franchise about a high school girl navigating the supernatural world alongside her vampire boyfriend.
Hell, there's even a dozen students watching that very film while cluttering the already busy hallways, making things harder to walk through.
“Hey, watch it!” One girl yelled at Chulo when he accidentally bumped into her and her friends and almost made them drop their tablet when Jakeward was talking with Rochelle, shirtless and glittery.
“Sorry!” He said apologetically, and ran away from their icy stares. Once they were out of range, Chulo sighed out of relief. Then continued to air his grievances towards his brother. Hoping for some comfort.
Instead, Guapo cackled “A babysitter? For you?!”, as the two siblings walked down the south corridor hallway.
Who’d thought that his younger brother would still be babysat at the age of fifteen? Hilarious.
“Shh! Keep it down, man.” Chulo glanced around if anyone heard. Thankfully, no one spared a glance at their way–per usual. “This kind of info could totally ruin a guy's rep. And it's not for me, it's because of Georgie.”
“Don’t get why mom didn’t ask me to babysit?” Guapo raised an eyebrow. “I was supervising that night too.”
“She said something about you being the last resort if there were no adults around…or neighbors…” Chulo rebutted. “And did you hit your head or something? Georgie went outside under your watch.” He threw an accusative finger at Guapo's face.
“Well, on the positive side, one of these high school babes could totally be at Mama’s place tonight.” Guapo winked at a passing girl. “Hey, hot stuff.”
The random girl grimaced from his advance and walked away, muttering something that sounded like, ‘Mexican spock freak.’
“Dude!” Chulo grimaced at his brother's advances. “Gross.”
“What? Jealous of my charm?” Guapo smiled playfully.
“I'm so embarrassed to be related to you.” The younger brother shook his head. And without any warning, Guapo pulled Chulo into a headlock and noogied his hair. “Hey–stop that! It took me an hour to perfect it!”
“Aww, is baby Chulo here trying to act all grown up? Got his big boy pants on and everything.” Guapo cooed, now pinching Chulo's face.
“QUIT IT!” Chulo squirmed out of Guapo's grip and punched him in the arm.
“Say uncle!” He remarked.
The two boys began to rough house right in the middle of the hallway, earning weird stares from their classmates though none of them cared enough to stay. Maybe just to whisper or laugh, “Dorks!”
While in the middle of their fight, something in the corner of Guapo’s eyes caught something. Standing in front of the empty glass trophy case was Principal Campbell putting up two missing person posters up. Or at least he's trying to but one of his hands was occupied with keeping his cup of joe from spilling.
Before Guapo could comment on that, a newcomer arrived beside the principal's side.
“Here, let me help you with that,” The newcomer said, grabbing the coffee out of Principal Campbell’s hand.
Guapo scoffed, recognizing the voice. Standing there was Luke Castellan and his posse of yes men. The guy was considerably the most popular senior in Pine Hills High and a god amongst men. Good looks, charisma, money, the blond had it all.
But deep down, Guapo had always felt something was… off about that guy. Like how Luke always wore dark sunglasses even in class, didn’t show off any skin, or the fact that people always had this dazed look and slurred speech after talking with him.
Principal Campbell smiled, now able to hang the posters up. “Thank you young man-” He began to say right when Luke decided to take a sip of his coffee. Gross.
Principal Campbell was gonna reprimand the senior but Luke cut him off, “Ahh. French roast.” His eyes staring right into the adult's eyes.
“French roast..” Principal Campbell repeated. His speech all slurred as if he was in a trance.
“Good choice.” Luke added, handing it back to the staff and walked away with his posse trailing behind him like goth ducklings. Gothlings.
“Good choice….” Principal Campbell said before shaking his head.
Noticing the Valdez kids staring at him, Principal Campbell sheepishly chuckled. “Boys in the drama club.” He said. “Always making a scene.”
Fixing his suit, Principal Campbell walked away and towards his office sipping on whatever’s left in his drink. Double gross.
“Wow,” Chulo spoke up. “Those guys give me the creeps. How in the world does anyone worship him?”
“I have no clue dude…” Guapo didn't know why but a strange chill went down his spine whenever the creepy blond was close by. “Come on, let's forget those creeps and head to class.”
They passed through the hallway, minding their business. Nearly bumping into one of the jocks that hung around Luke. Chris Rodriguez.
He puffed his chest just to make them squirm.
They scrambled away, avoiding eye contact, and stumbling apologies. Chris grinned, enjoying the rush from the two boys afraid of him.
Laughing to himself. Chris sneered, “Nerds.”
There was a scoff of annoyance, “Why are you here?”
Chris turned his eye level lower to a girl with long curly hair scowling at him. She didn’t have that melodramatic gothling vibe. She was more brash if you didn’t know her. If you did know her, it was like an entirely flipped personality. She could be supernaturally perceptive of you. Like a bruja.
Right now, Chris couldn’t tell which Breisa he was going to get. So he turned on his suave voice, “To see you?”
Breisa just deadpanned, “You’ve ignored my calls for 3 months. And you still come up with excuses to see me? Now?”
“Bree baby, please.” Chris threw a ‘charming smile’. “Weren’t you talking about how we should build a better relationship and that we…” he blinked, trying to fill in the gaps.
Breisa’s brow twitched, “Should break up. I’m done wasting my time on you. I don’t want to be in a relationship— or whatever you call this.” She waved the space between them.
But he didn't even seem concerned or anything. Barely reacting to the threat of their relationship. “What? Come one, just one more chance. I mean I did take you out for dinner—“
“Dinner is going out and having some fun. It isn’t creeping in an alley to scope out the ‘menu’. Like some disgusting rat." She huffed, leaning close to him. “And you said you were cutting off. Do you know how dangerous that is? What could happen if you lose control? Or if someone caught you?”
Chris held her shoulders and dismissed her concerns. “You worry too much, Luke has it handled.”
“Oh right, totally.” Breisa waved like it was no big deal. “Being part of the clique is so much better than thinking for yourself. Forgive me for showing concern as your girlfriend. Oh wait sorry— ex-girlfriend.”
“Bree, Bree, Bree.” He said in a tsk tsk type of tone. “Look, we do this all the time. We fight, then I make it up to you, we make out, and the problem is solved. I mean if we're always going to do this thing. Why not do it for eternity?” He flashed his smile, two teeth canines gleaming and sticking out from the corner of his lips.
“Eres un cochino marrano.” Breisa slammed her locker. “I don’t know why I didn’t see it sooner. Spent so much of my time trying to help you! And for what?! For you to just run off and act like Luke’s little lap dog! I hope you have fun stuck in limbo forever!”
She walked away, ignoring the bystanders whispering and gawking at her and a pissed off Chris.
“Whatever, you’ll come running back to me anyways!” Chris shouted at her.
Breisa responds by throwing a middle finger over her shoulder.
Fuck him, She decided. I already feel lighter without him. I am not tethered to him anymore.
Chris' eyes still followed her figure. Jaw clenched. She wasn’t off his hook until he decided. He’ll make sure of it.
Thunder and lightning strikes in the sky. Raindrops begin to pour on the windowscreen as a couple intensely stare into each other's eyes. The tension in the air is thick as the trees in the forest.
"I love you." Rochelle whispered breathlessly.
"I'm not human." Jakeward replied, barring his teeth-two large fangs glistered in the car's light. But the girl didn't waver.
"I don't care." She got closer, breathing heavily. "Bite me. I'm begging you."
As we pull back from this movie, we see a young girl- Georgina chowing down on some popcorn. Jumping at the sudden shriek rippling from the clunky old box tv. She was enthralled by this popular teen movie. Clearly wasn't made for her age. You'd think that the people responsible for her would put a stop to it and she did have someone watching over but...
"Look at all of this!" Chulo exclaimed. His arms were full of marshmallow bags and tubs of ice cream, and throwing them down onto the wooden table. "What'd you do, rob an ice cream truck or something?"
Guapo shook his head, "Actually the ice cream guy truck busted, he was totally cool on letting me take all this. And for good reason to celebrate!
Tomorrow, you officially join the high school brethren!"
Chulo smiled at his brother. "Hell yeah! We are men. We must mark the moment."
"Let's make it the Sunday to end all Sundays!" Guapo said in his monster truck announcer voice.
"Remember grade five when you put 176 of these inside your mouth?"
Chulo recalled, pulling a seat back for him.
"Yeah, right! It was 186!" Guapo scoffed.
Chulo scowled. "No way. I did 172; you did 176."
"You barely hit 150!" The two siblings paused and lunged for the marshmallows, now in a tug of war for it.
"I got it." Chulo said but Guapo pulled the bag harder.
"No, mine."
"Mine!
"Mine."
Chulo gave up and shoved the bag to his brother's chest. He grabbed his own handful of gooey treats. "Remember to count them."
While the boys were occupied with their sugary feast and macho competition-
THUNK!
hit the side of the house. Near that area between the kitchen door and down below in the garage.
Georigina tried to ignore the THUNK THUNK THUNK! but the sound didn't go away, only getting louder by the second.
"Hey, Milo, Nadro," the eight year old called out. "Do you hear that?"
But her words fell upon deaf ears as Guapo and Chulo became engrossed in the marshmallows they're shoving into their mouths. Sighing, Georgina took it upon herself to investigate.
"Teenagers are really dumb." She remarked to her doll. Opening the creaky kitchen door and turning left, Georgina made her way down the fire escape.
The rusty metal creaked at the weight of Georgina climbed down the stairs and into a dark and empty alleyway. There wasn't much down there except for the rotting trash bins, rats scurrying around, and graffiti artwork spray painted on the sides of the bins and building.
Nothing out of the ordinary to her. Georgina turned to go back to her movie and popcorn.
THUNK THUNK noise returned.
Following the sound, Georgina walked out of the alleyway to find two giant teens messing around in front of their garage.
The first teenager-a burly and pale looking guy with a red hockey shirt-was hitting empty beer cans with his hockey stick towards the metal doors.
The second teenager-a tall guy with long blond locks and a purple jacket-was too engrossed on whatever's on his cell phone, taking a sip of his beer.
"Cal shoots," the hockey player announced. Then slammed another can towards the garage, leaving a dent in it. "Cal scores!"
"Yeah, yeah, whatever, the jacket guy scoffed. "Man, I'm so bored. Can we go now? There's barely any pretty girls around to play with."
"But Zane, you promised to hang!" Cal complained in a whiny voice that didn't quite fit with his appearance. Stomping his feet like a fussy toddler.
Zane groaned, regretting all of his life choices. "Look dude-"
"What are you two doing?" Stepping out of her hiding spot, Georgina wore a frown on her face.
"What's it look like we're doing?" Zane asked.
"Trepassing," Georgina rebutted. "And damaging private property. Not to mention littering." She glanced at their numerous booze cans thrown around the area.
Zane rolled his eyes. He's already dealing with a man child, he doesn't need another whiny brat, in bunny slippers no less. Getting up in front of the sidewalk, he glared down at Georgina.
"Why don't you scram, you twerp?" He snared at her. "Don't you know only big kids get to stay up late."
"If you two don't leave now, I'm gonna call my brothers right now and have them kick your butts!" Georgina pointed up at her apartment above the garage.
But Zane or Cal didn't get intimidated by the threat. If anything, the two began to laugh hysterically.
"I've seen your brothers. They're older but not that big or scary looking." Eyed the plush in Georgina's hands, Zane swiped it from her.
"Hey!" She exclaimed, jumping up and down to reach for her doll.
"What? You want it?" Zane sneered, waving it over her head. "Fetch!" He tossed the felt doll in front of Cal's feet.
Cal swung his stick so hard the doll flew, smacked the garage, and splashed into a dirty puddle.
"ABBEY!" Distraught, Georgina ran down and picked up her doll. Abbey was soaked from head to toe, full of stains. It would be impossible to clean it all out. Even with a busted old washing machine. But Georgina still swiped the grime now before it got worse. Even using her own pajamas as a cleaning cloth.
Wiping off the dust in his hands, Zane shoved them into his pockets and said, "Alright, let's go now. I had enough loser cooties for one night."
Cal whined but one glare from his friend shut up his complaints. The two grabbed their stuff to leave. Above the trees rustling in the wind, almost sounding like flapping wings.
Zane on his phone, scrolled through his contact list. Only thing on his mind
which girl he's calling tonight.
‘This one’s cute,’ He thought, dialing the number. Listening to the buzzing to stop.
Cal had managed to pack up his hockey sticks. He bent down to tie his shoe. Briefly glancing at the shadow over him.
“Hey Zane—“ WHOOSH
Cal had vanished without a trace. The only thing that stood in his place were his bags.
The phone clicked, “Hellooo?” A bubbly voice asked.
“Ugh finally,” Zane muttered. “Hey Sarah, how have you been? Listen, I'm free right now so I was thinking: how about you and I go–”
A dark figure standing over him. Zane stumbled, dropping his phone. Stumbling something unintelligible.
WHOOSH!
He disappeared.
“Helloo?” Sarah called out, still on the line. “Zane? Are you still there?”
No answer.
The girl huffed, “If this is a prank Zane! We are so over!”
Dial tone beeped.
The noise didn’t go unnoticed by Georgina. She looked up, the two bullies were nowhere to be found. Walking over to where the boys once stood, she only found the unattended hockey bags and a cracked flip phone in their place.
Above, she heard rustling up in the overgrown tree. When she looked up, she noticed red eyes glinting in the leaves. Two pearly fangs gleaming, sinking into a body.
The eight year old realized it was the bully who was taunting her, paralyzed. Frozen with wide eyes. And blood tripping down his throat.
Georgina did the only rational thing an eight year old could comprehend.
She shrieked in terror, “AHHHH!”
Headlights flashed at her form. Car wheels screeched to a stop as Esperanza pulled into their complex.
“GEORGINA!” Esperanza exclaimed. Without hesitation, she dashed out of her old work truck.
Panicking, the lady checked on her daughter for any signs of scraps or bruises.
“Mija, aguas aguas! Qué está pasando?” She asked, holding her face. “You're covered in dirt. Why are you out here by yourself? ¿Dónde están tus hermanos?”
Unable to explain why she was outside or even what she saw, Georgina clinged onto Esperanza for comfort, clenching her eyes shut. Tears streaming out of fear and shock.
Esperanza felt her protectiveness and anger rising. She screamed out, “EMILO SAMUEL VALDEZ! LEONARDO JOAQUIN VALDEZ! SÀCATE AQUÍ AHORA!”
There was silence, followed by chaos of chair screeching on the wooden floor. Then their sneakers stomping and squeaking. The metal door to the apartment slamming open.
Both brothers came rushing out, marshmallows stuffed in their cheeks. At the glare of his mother. Chulo spat, marshmallows tumbled out of his mouth.
“Mom, heyyyy?” He said awkwardly. “You’re home early. How was work?”
Guapo waved just as awkward, still holding the marshmallows in his mouth.
