Mira swung her axe in a wide downward arc, hearing it make contact with a dull thunk. One ogre down, two more to go.
Behind her, she could hear as Rumi continue to brandish spells at the ogre she was dealing with.
Truth be told, Mira had originally been reluctant to partner up with a sorcerer. She'd always thought of magic as flimsy nonsense - nothing compared to the solid reliability of a good weapon.
But time and time again, Rumi had saved her hide, so her resolve started to wear down enough that she tolerated the other woman's company.
And now, as they were ambushed by a trio of ogres, Mira knew she wouldn't have been able to take care of these brutes alone.
"I'll take the bigger one," Rumi had said as she launched a fireball at the big hulking creature, her tone brooking no room for argument.
Mira had huffed, but did as Rumi had suggested. And okay, by this point, Mira was more than aware that she had long surpassed just tolerating Rumi's company. She was actively nursing a little bit of a crush on the tiefling.
Now that one of the ogres had fallen, Mira was confident the other one would fall just as easily. With a decisive battle cry, Mira rushed forward to the ogre. He was smaller than the other two ogres in the pack, but unbeknownst to Mira, he was infinitely smarter than his companions.
He'd seen how Mira had taken his brother down, and when Mira began to swing her axe, he brought his arm up, armored brace catching the blade in such a way that her weapon got stuck in the leather.
Mira huffed as she tried to pry her weapon away, but it was no use.
And in her distraction, that left her perfectly open for the ogre to swing his spiked club right at Mira.
The impact wrenched her from her feet, and she felt her body go weightless for a moment before her head impacted with something—probably the ground if she had to guess. Her entire body followed, tumbling and rolling, making her wince and grunt.
"MIRA!" she faintly heard Rumi screech. She wanted to reassure her friend—were they friends?—that she was okay, but her body hurt too much.
When she finally felt herself settle, she tried to open her eyes, and immediately regretted it. Her vision swam, and Mira wasn't sure if it was from the impact, or the dirt she'd kicked up.
The ogre wasn't done though, and her began to pummel her with something. Judging by the impact and the lacerations, she was probably getting hammered with the spiky club.
Just as when Mira was about to lose all hope, she heard a guttural scream, and flashing purple light.
"GET AWAY FROM HER!" someone roared. It wasn't Rumi, was it? It didn't sound like her. Had she summoned something?
She tried to focus her bleary eyes, she really did, but she could barely see anything, just lights flashing in front of her, and suddenly, the menacing figure of the ogre was gone. She closed her eyes, breathing easier.
"Mira?!" she heard, as if the voice was far away and she was underwater. She felt someone shuffle next to her. "Mira? Please be okay...please please."
All Mira could manage was a groan. But then, she began to feel a warm sensation, as if someone was running a warm bath all over her wounds.
"This spell better heal you, you idiot," Mira heard Rumi tearfully say.
Oh Mira wanted nothing more to crack a joke to reassure Rumi. But her voice failed her still.
After a moment, where Rumi continued to ramble about something or other—Mira wasn't really paying attention, she just liked hearing Rumi's voice, it soothed her—Mira began to feel her strength come back to her. She opened her eyes, and was greeted by a beautiful sight.
Rumi's face was so close to hers, and there were some tears running down her cheeks.
Gingerly, Mira brought a hand up to wipe some of the tears away.
"Gods!" Rumi said with a shaky laugh, sniffing. "You hells-damned idiot."
Mira managed a breathy chuckle, before she inhaled and haltingly blurted, "'m your idiot though."
Rumi's hands moved to cup Mira's cheeks. She faintly heard as Rumi muttered, "You're alive, you're alive," as if in reverent prayer.
Mira was just about to make what was probably a distasteful joke, but then froze when Rumi brought them impossibly closer and uttered, "Do that again and I'll-"
The rest of the threat dissolved into a broken sob.
"Don't worry," Mira whispered against Rumi's lips. "I'm tougher than I look."
With a heavy exhale, Rumi brought their lips crashing together as if she needed Mira like air.
Mira's brain immediately shut down, hardly believing what was happening. She was kissing Rumi. Rumi was kissing her!
Was this real? Was she hallucinating? Or sleeping? If she was, she didn't want to wake up.
Snaking her arms around Rumi, Mira sat up and began to run her hands down Rumi's back, eliciting a delicious shudder from her.
Not one to be outdone, Rumi rolled her hips against Mira's core.
"Fuck me," Mira gasped.
"If you wish," Rumi playfully responded, wiggling her fingers to make their clothes disappear.
It was then that Mira noticed Rumi's hands. They were purple, and they had claws?
Maybe if she hadn't just been tossed around like a ragdoll and pummeled within an inch of her life, she'd have remarked this. But Mira was pretty sure her head wasn't all that there, and besides, she had a very hot and very naked Rumi straddling her hips. She'd be an idiot to ignore that.
And she was perfectly happy to let Rumi take the lead as she gently moved Mira to lie back down, her lips once again finding Mira's.
The kiss this time was slower, more sensual, a deeper connection that made Mira almost want to thank the ogre. Would she be getting this if he hadn't gone ham on her?
She faintly registered Rumi's claws digging into her shoulder blades, and she hissed into the kiss.
Well, one thing was for sure: Mira was definitely not dreaming.
