Digitizing & 2 Pumpkins
I almost hate to say it but my home studio is…..going digital. It's happening for multiple reasons, mainly spacial, so i had to make some consolations. I don't hate digital, I just feel more at home with knobs and faders and buttons and gauges and dials. You'll hear this a lot but digital to me is just so sterile and perfect sounding. I think the beauty of analog recordings is that things are not always perfect and its those imperfections that make great music. Well hey, this whole digitalization may open my eyes and embrace my new robot masters. I still wish i had knobs to turn.
Fall beer season is upon us and i have two to share with you. First the not so good. I was picking something up to take to a friends BBQ and stopped in a store by their house. My options were limited, but i did manage to see a pumpkin headed label and thought the night was saved. It turned out to be Shock Top's Pumpkin wheat.
Now i thought that it was going to be an actual pumpkin beer, what i got was Shock Top with a last minute splash of something that might of had pumpkin flavoring at one time, the melted wax of a scented candle perhaps. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't what they say it is. You may notice on the bottom of the bottle it says brewed with pumpkin and spices. It didn't even have the aroma that would indicate this brewing took place. It worked in a pinch and i guess points for the pumpkin cutout sunglasses on the label.
Next the good. I found Magic Hat's seasonal Night of the Living Dead pack and picked one up. Included in it is their pumpkin brew called the Wilhelm Scream.
If you don't know what the Wilhelm Scream is then there is no hope for you. OK, i'm sure you've at least heard it. It's in countless movies. It's that almost ridiculous scream you hear when someone gets shot and then falls off a cliff. Watch any Indiana Jones or Star Wars movie and you'll hear it.
Back to the beer. It's got that great fall ale color, the aroma, everything. It's smooth with no real after taste and just the right amount of pumpkin and spices. The artwork is spot on as well. I didn't know what it was going to look like because i had bought the seasonal pack, but if i were walking down the aisle and saw that on the shelf it's definitely an eye catcher worth checking out.
So how do they rate against PumpkinHead? The Shock Top is not even a challenger but the Wilhelm Scream I would get again. If it was between the two though, PumpkinHead still comes out on top.
Hardcore Tom Petty Fans?
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers new album opened at number one on the charts recently and this got me thinking, who bought all of those albums? I only ask because I have this theory: Look through anyone's music collection and chances are they have Tom Petty's Greatest Hits, but no one has any other albums. Where are the hardcore fans?
In Halifax apparently:
This is Mike Campbell (no not that one), TPatHBs SUPER FAN!! Photo courtesy of http://thechronicleherald.ca/artslife/101816-halifax-s-heartbreakers-kid where you can read his full story.
Ask anyone else and sure they know of Tom Petty and sure they know a few hits, but no one emphatically says YES!! and then goes into their quaint idiosyncrasies without even mentioning a radio hit. I only have this theory because I am one of the hardcore Heartbreakers and always find myself asking others of their catalog only to get a passing "oh yeah" followed by a blank stare. Although I'm already used to it being a Rush fan (a whole other story).
They still continue to sell out arenas across the country year after year. Where are these fans coming from, or are they just there to hear the hits (which to be fair there are a lot) calling out "Free Fallin' "? Or have I yet to find the right circles where Petty is part of the musical vernacular? Whatever the reason for this strange occurrence, they are to me a piece of Americana, their tone is something to die for, and are just really nice guys who love what they do. If all you've ever experienced is the greatest hits, try going a little deeper and see what you might find.
More Random Thrift Store Finds
After finishing up our actual business at a local strip center, we ventured in to a fairly new thrift store in the same plaza. Oh what magical and amazing finds could be had. Here are a few that caught our eye:
Look at that beautiful piece of machinery. The knobs, the buttons, the gauges. For those of you wondering what it is you're looking at, this is an 8 Track player. Back before the time of MP3's, CD's, and even cassette tapes there were 8 tracks and this is what you used to play them on in your house. Of course you would also need a speaker system hooked up as well, or at the very least a giant set of cans (old lingo for headphones) over your head. Heres a close up of those gauges:
The last few items were all found in the frame section. I don't normally look through the pile of frames falling everywhere, but walking by we spotted one we couldn't believe.
Someone's wedding photo. So many different scenarios ran through my head as to why this wedding photo ended up in the mass grave of frames. I'll let you come up with your own and decide which one is true.
Next there were a series of pictures possibly from someones vacation or professional mementos.
You too can have the Surfing Series in your house. At $1 a piece how can you pass it up? Well we did. And don't think these are just come with the frame pictures. We opened them up and checked that they are actual photos.
Finally the funniest yet most disturbing of the bunch. You may want to look away:
I'll wait a few moments while you, as the kids say, LOL. Ok…you done? No? Now? Ok. Yes someone had a portrait taken of their pet hamster in a basket, or maybe had their dead pet hamster stuffed and memorialized in this now macabre display.
That's all for this edition of Random Thrift Store Finds. Next time Amber tries on old wigs and starts her thrift store church hymnal collection.
It's got a logo now, it has to be a thing
Coming Soon.....Beer & Gear!!
It's a new segment I'd like to try and keep a somewhat regular posting of. You've already seen my foray into quirky reviews and anecdotes of my adventures in strange brews so I thought I'd add to it another passion...gear. Musical gear to be exact. I am a gear junkie. I have a problem. And I love it. Special guests and I will be bringing you reviews and demos of some of my favorite gear, others favorite gear and maybe even famous peoples gear...and beer.
I just noticed Oktoberfest beers are out....Pumpkinhead is not far behind!!
Officially finished. Made a name plate and new cream controls. #defectiveaudio #tubeamp
It's my birthday and we're going out to get free stuff for Amber...
Bert wins Comic-Con.
The mailman must have known today is Batman Day and got me these ahead of schedule. #batmandayiseveryday
While our salesman was out doing stuff I moonlighted in his place for a bit. I made no sales.
Someone went to Downtown Disney without me but she came through in the end.
When Pumpiknhead Goes On Summer Vacation
Strolling through the aisles of my local spirits store, I came across a familiar image.....only not. If you remember my review of Shipyards Pumpkinhead you'll see what I mean.
That is the same label image as Pumpkinhead only in Summer Melon form. I had to get this. I had to know if his summer off season job was just as good as his fall classic. I will say i was a little skeptical of a fruity beer and just bought a single bottle, not committing to the full six pack.
I was already surprised upon the initial pour. Half expecting a pink colored bubbling liquid, I instead see a normal light colored ale. I gave a swirling sniff and did not even receive a hint of melon aroma. Intrigued, I downed a quick quaff. It was very light and smooth with a nice little bit of melon on the back. Not at all sweet like some fruit based beers and no unsettling after taste at all. This could easily be had after a hot day on the porch. It was crisp and refreshing. i wish i had gotten the whole six pack. Only a few short months until the fall classic is back, but for now I'll gladly settle for the summer job.
