So apparently Shauntal is 18 in the design documents for Black and White, and with Grimsley being 27, that means there's a 9-year age gap between them.

Considering how tall she's in Masters, however, almost as tall as him... I don't know if that made it past the very basic drafts for her character. At some point, her and Caitlin's ages and heights might've been swapped, because if I had to bet I'd always say that Caitlin was the youngest of the Unova E4 by a decently wide margin. She's the shortest in canon now, too, so I choose to cope.

Besides, I write a more "grounded" Pokémon world so I choose not to believe that a girl managed to become a published novelist and an E4 before finishing high-school. In my HC, and in Adult Diversion, Shauntal is around 25-26 and Grimsley is at least 29.

On that note, I feel like Shauntal is often infantilized / turned into this inexperienced childish person who needs A Man (you know who) to take the lead for her and be the Normal one in the relationship. I do not like that characterization for her, and the main reason I even like Rolandshipping so much is because if there's one man in her life she can be completely enamored by while still being a snarky smartass toward him, that's Grimsley.

I like them because they're on equal footing, which is also why I won't be taking the character design notes into consideration. I like them bantering, calling each other out, trying to constantly one-up each other in their weird version of romanticism.

If anything, Shauntal is more emotionally mature than Grimsley. He's just really really good at reading people.
