” And at last I see the light - And it’s like the sky is new. “
I don’t think we talk about how the “Gordon” the science team knows and loves is technically not real. He’s a character played by a streamer. The most important person in their lives is someone they barely know, a facade for content. To the point where in the Half Life 2 act one stream he says he needs to “be Gordon so the AI will recognize him.” Is that not kind of terrifying. It makes the wall between Wayne (the guy in character playing hlvrai, not the real guy who writes the series) and his AI friends even larger. What happens when the gnome series comes into play and the identity of “Gordon” is forced on him and the lines start to blur. Why have I seen no one talking about this I feel like I’m losing my mind. Let’s not even START about it Alyx because that’s a whole other can of identity worms. The meta layers to this series gets so confusing it terrifies and intrigues me to no end.
Posting this even though I kinda hate it just for fun, these aren't my final designs but they're something.
you guys REALLY seemed to like my last addibubby post so uh… more. For you.
Welcome to my weird silly rarepair that makes me giggle with glee

THIS IS PURELY HYPOTHETICAL THIS IS NOT A COMMITMENT OR A TEASE THIS IS A POLL BORN OUT OF CURIOSITY OKAY.
with me being basically unable to do any sort of live-session hl2vrai ask blog shenanigans for a while due to the longer length of the game/gaps between acts, and a lack of a full picture, i was thinking: if i get in the mood to do something like that again, would people show up for a sort of “hlvrv redux”? basically an ask blog running through episode 1 of hlvrv all over again but with 2026 mothra’s style of writing and art and such? the cons would obviously be that there’d be no “new plot” to discover, i’d be keeping the structure and main plot basically the same, but the pros would be seeing how i tell the story again and also yknow. you as Askers would get to send in messages to that specific time period of hlvrv if you weren’t there for the original run! this would also be hosted on a separate sideblog from regular hlvrv and would use that classic tagging system that doesn’t clog up main tags
tell me your thoughts.
yes, i would enthusiastically participate in a hlvrv redux blog
no, i would not participate in a hlvrv redux blog
i would like to see you revisit hlvrv in the form of fanfics/writing
i would prefer to leave hlvrv alone and send my inquries to your main

Father Grigori from Half-Life 2 makes multiple appearances in Act 1. Only Gordon seems to acknowledge him.
Father Grigori’s appearances in Act 1 of HLVRAI have seemingly become canon, as he mentions having visions of Gordon and Black Mesa in Act 1 of HL2VRAI.

Adore his polite little pose here 🫶 and whatever that hev (food??) suit alert was on about.
Gordon, the Idea vs. Gordon, the Man
Thinking about Wayne's recent explanation of Gordon's... state of being, I suppose? which is summarized as "Wayne | -> player -> Gordon". Wayne explained that he himself is removed from the canon, but Gordon does have an actual "player" playing as him, an anonymous "real person" in this world that embodies Gordon Freeman for the sake of the NPCs.
Its unclear then how much of the personal details and expressed experiences apply to "the player" or to "Gordon".
Maybe "the player" is entirely removed, sharing no traits or feelings to "Gordon", and is simply an actor playing a character.
I've seen this interpretation before, and while its canon-compliant (and likely the view Wayne himself has), I feel it's boring. It leaves few stakes for "the player" and introduces this unknowable person into the story that hypothetically exists with a real name, personality, and life outside of the game, but we will never get any of this information.
Maybe— and this is the interpretation I prefer— "the player" is very much playing as himself, but still pretending to have sensory experiences in the world that he just doesn't have.
In an "expanding-on-canon" way, I interpret that the "player" does have some of these sensory experiences; phantom sensations of what he's seeing + hearing + experiencing psychologically but not physically. The player doesn't realize its happening as its a slow process, but he becomes enmeshed with the character he plays. Tetris effect to the extreme.
Specifically nowadays I prefer "'The player' was already psychologically fragile and had a tenuous connection with reality, therefore this highly immersive VR experience with sapient AI and long-term dynamic experiences shattered the barrier between fiction and reality in his mind. Now he doesn't know where 'the player' ends and 'Gordon' begins" over how I used to interpret it as "The game infests his mind like a parasite, either through sci-fi tech or alien shenanigans". Both can be cool though!
Back on the topic of personal details for "the player": I like to think "the player" did have his own name, but after becoming enmeshed with the game, he now considers Gordon Freeman to be his true name.
This idea is extra fun to me if "the player" originally thought he was a woman, but after experiencing manhood via this game, it cracked his egg. He can't go back now that he knows what he could have. Adds another emotionally significant reason for "the player" to prefer and embody his game self over his real-world self
Tl;dr: HLVRAI is about the paper-thin barrier between your real self and the fake persona you've been embodying being shred apart and you no longer know who you are or which experiences are reality/illusion
