The Japanese convenience store chain Lawson is collaborating with Yuri on Ice this August to bring you some new original merchandise!
And the boys in traditional Russian outfits, apparently haha.
Also, in a wild twist, the rings finally make an appearance in a non-Mappa merchandise set:

This new strap set with Makkachin is so cute ☺️💕
Jeffrey Buttle might be involved in choreographing for the YOI movie??
(along with Kenji Miyamoto of course)
Jeffrey tweeted: Shooting a movie on the ice tonight in 🗾. Lobby call was at 19:30 and my drop off time is 29:50 aka 6am. #needmorecoffee
According to twitter user kobutane1129: Tonight Jeff Buttle was recording from 7:30 pm to 6:00 am in the morning at the Chiba Aquarink, which they chartered for use that night. They were filming choreography for two dimensional characters.
Kenji was reported to have been filmed working on YOI at the same rink recently.
For reference, Kenji Miyamoto’s choreography for the original anime was filmed in early spring (March-April) of 2016, and the show itself premiered in October 2016. Judging by that, we’re probably looking at a release date of this coming winter, but it could be longer because film animation is more time consuming (and unlike tv animation, which is done episode by episode, it has to be entirely complete upon release).
Hoo boy, I was skeptical at first but more info is flowing in and this might actually be huge news.
Note the tape on his arm - in the official footage from recording the choreography for the yoi TV anime (which came with the Japanese DVDs), Miyamoto (the original choreographer) was wearing this:
They’re both taped up on one side of the body (I think this is to make it easier for the animators who use them as references to tell which arm/leg is left and which is right, but I don’t have a confirmation for this).
And here’s some more thoughts from Jeffrey himself:
Oh, and here are the drawings and signatures by Kubo and Yamamoto, which can be found near the entrance of Chiba Aquarink - dated for the beginning of May 2018, likely when they began filming Miyamoto’s choreography. What else could they be doing there?
For those who don’t know (which included me until a moment ago lol), Jeffrey choreographed programs for all of these real life skaters:
A lot of big names there. Not to mention he choreographed Yuzuru’s Parisian Walkways - probably my favorite SP ever.
So yeah. Once again it looks like yoi is attempting to do one of the greatest collabs ever and it’s exciting stuff. (Infinity War who)
As for predicted release dates: I think accio makes a good point, but it’s also important to consider that the movie will likely have less skating and less programs overall than the TV anime, so no more of the “animating 20+ different skating programs for a 12 episode anime” madness, hopefully.
At the same time, animating the Stammi Vicino program from episode 1 apparently took them like 3 months, so less programs doesn’t necessarily equal faster release/less work.
Anyway, with this, official movie news being announced at Yuri on Concert in Osaka on July 1st sound more likely than before. Don’t get your hopes up too high, but if they’re already recording choreography then they’re pretty far in the production process. The original anime was officially announced March 2016, when they were still shooting the choreography, like accio mentioned.
So yeah, surprisingly big news out of nowhere!
I don’t necessarily have an update to the situation but I did find some interesting info about something relevant!
Okay, so let’s go back to Jeff’s photo.
Initially, I assumed the “xsens” on his clothes was just some sports brand I didn’t know.
Well, it’s not.
I didn’t notice until the recent ANN article mentioned it, but it is indeed motion-capture gear. I know this was mentioned in the original tweet by denki but now I actually went out and found the exact sort of gear this is and boy, it’s cool stuff.
As far as I can tell, this is the “Xsens MVN - Optimized for use in gaming, film, animations and live entertainment.”
And specifically the MVN link - the lycra suit version, based on the pattern of the clothes, the gloves and the headband.
Okay, so what does this all mean?
Well, this form of motion capture allows for some really cool results, as you can see in the video below.
In terms of the production of the yoi movie, I think this is giving animators an additional tool - one which they can pause and rotate in any given direction and get all the anatomical details right.
But don’t worry - it doesn’t seem like they’ll be relying only on that. Jeff also has the tape on his arm, which means they were also recording his movements with standard cameras (assuming that the tape really is used as a way to help animators tell left limb from right limb - I mean what other use could it have?).
In short, it seems that the yoi team now has access to new tools and they are trying to make the most of them, while still utilizing more classic methods of reference gathering.

I’m loving this new official art!!! Look at their faces!!! Yuuri looks so proud of his medal and Viktor has his heart smile like he’s enjoying too much the fact that he’s holding his fiance from the waist 💕💕 proud coach!!!!
And of course this picture was taken after Yuuri said to Viktor that he’ll skate for one more season!!! That’s why Viktor is so so happy here!!! 💕💕💕
Guys Phichit was at the Cup of China.
So like that lovely decision Victor made to kiss Yuuri after his free skate?
Phichit was there. He was watching. He saw the whole thing happen.
He’d known Yuuri for ages, of course. He’s listened to Yuuri geek out about Victor and quad flips on multiple occasions. He knew what Yuuri’s theme was for the year.
So the minute Yuuri changed that jump, Phichit just knew.
“Ciao Ciao, did you see that? That was a flip. That was a quad flip. That was Victor’s quad flip, oh my God. Ciao Ciao, do you know what that means??? VICTOR NIKIFOROV MOVE YOUR HANDS SO I CAN SEE YOUR FACE. Oh my God it’s official, it has to be official. It’s official and he didn’t tell me, Yuuri Katuski I’m going to to- No. No. No no no no no. Did he just- Ciao Ciao did you see that? DID YOU SEE THAT YUURI KATSUKI WHAT THE HELL???”
At that point, Phichit goes off towards the kiss and cry. Yuuri’s still there, of course. So Phichit waits. He stands there, aggressively foot-tapping, trying to look pissed and intimidating, but failing because goddammit why are they so cute??
Phichit grabs Yuuri by the arm the minute he’s out of the kiss and cry and just screams.
Yuuri is unfazed by this.
Victor, on the other hand, is more than a little terrified.

“Why look at your phone when I’m right here?!”
Finally a new post! Sorry it’s been a while ^^ I’m gonna start it off with some Victuuri! I miss them :”) when will they come back?
THIS MAN CRIES CRYSTAL TEARS THAT COULD STAR A WAR IN A FANTASTIC KINGDOM
Could you do 69 with Victuuri?
69. “Why the hell are you bleeding!?”
Viktor is climbing the stairs to his apartment—giddy from another grocery store trip spent audibly deliberating whether his husband would prefer granny smith apples or honeycrisp and showing off his and Yuuri’s Britney and Justin circa 2001 matching denim ensemble couple’s Halloween costumes to the cashiers— when his phone rings.
“I have good news and bad news,” Yuuri’s voice echoes through the earpiece—soft and oddly out of breath.
Viktor wonders if Yuuri’s finally decided to listen to his pleas and experiment with phone sex. He starts taking the stairs two at a time. “Okay?” He prompts, distantly hoping the good news is that he’s horny and the bad news is that he doesn’t have any handsome husbands around to share the good news with.
“The good news is I fixed the blender,” Yuuri says. Viktor is only mildly disappointed. It’s not phone sex, but it’s been a struggle to start the day without his favorite fruit smoothies, and, as Yuuri had pointed out before Viktor left for the store, the mornings were hard enough without both of them being cranky toast stealers. He digs in his pocket for his keys. “The bad news is—” Yuuri starts as Viktor swings the door open.
“You’re bleeding?” Viktor drops the grocery bags on the floor. A rogue honeycrisp apple rolls across the hardwood and Yuuri catches it under his foot, looks up at Viktor with a self-deprecating smile.
“Yeah, that.”
Yuuri is disconcertingly calm for someone with blood smeared over his shirt, vivid blooms of carmine dampening a previously-white kitchen towel held protectively against his chest. “And I might’ve thrown up in the sink.”
“You—?” Viktor trips over his own feet in his rush to reach Yuuri’s side. He guides a pale, unblinking Yuuri to a kitchen stool and starts to unwrap the injury before changing his mind, shaking his head as if to fling the mental image from his brain. “We’re going to the hospital.”
“I’m fine,” Yuuri probably means to say, but Viktor has already scooped him up for a dramatic exit and the words sound more like “mm frrn” from his face pressed against Viktor’s chest.
Turns out, to the surprise of only one person who is definitely not Viktor, Yuuri is not fine. Seven stitches worth of not fine.
Viktor tries to open the car door for Yuuri when they get home from the hospital, then tries to insist upon carrying Yuuri up the stairs when Yuuri so rudely opens the door for himself. “I can walk,” Yuuri says, climbing the stairs with his good hand grazing the wall for balance.
“Seven stitches,” Viktor reminds, trailing at Yuuri’s heels like a nervous puppy. It’s been the only rebuttal slipping off his tongue since finally witnessing the terror that lay behind the now-ruined towel at the hospital.
“On my hand.” Yuuri leans against the wall, waiting for Viktor to let them into the apartment.
Viktor does so quickly, before Yuuri can change his mind and do something crazy like touch the doorknob and find out Viktor had forgotten to lock the apartment in his previous panic. There’s melted ice cream in the entryway and Viktor spins around to warn Yuuri about it but he’s already halfway across the room, heading towards the bathroom.
“Angel—” Viktor hops around what was supposed to be part one of his and Yuuri’s after dinner treat—“where you headed?”
Yuuri sits on the closed toilet and works on pulling his shirt over his head with one hand. “Just wanted to take a quick shower,” he says, barely managing to hold back a grimace when the hem of his sleeve catches his bandage. Viktor kneels in front of him and rolls the sleeve off the rest of the way. “I smell like a hospital.”
Viktor nuzzles his nose into the intersection of Yuuri’s neck and shoulder and inhales loudly. “You smell amazing, as always,” he declares when he pulls away, “but a shower’s probably not a bad idea.”
Yuuri flits his eyes to the side with a crooked smile and takes Viktor’s hand when he offers it, then laughs when he stands and Viktor immediately takes his spot on the toilet. “You’re staying?” He asks, wiggling out of his pants.
“I have to make sure you don’t pass out.”
Yuuri’s pants puddle at his feet and his shoulders wilt with a gentle smile. “Vitya,” he says, clearly and intentionally because he knows Viktor loves it, “I’m not going to pass out.”
“But I might,” Viktor points out, “so we should stay together. Just in case.”
Yuuri leans down to kiss the crown of Viktor’s head. “Fine.”
“No, you are.” Viktor stands, unbuttoning his top. He climbs in the shower stall after Yuuri, and Yuuri shakes his head but doesn’t argue it.
He gave Viktor his hand years ago, after all. It’s nothing he isn’t used to.
