Currently reading: a book which was recently featured on our local public radio station and which was praised for its writing and which I am gradually discovering contains such gems as:

This is really exciting, linguistically speaking.
Because it’s not true that Tumblr never uses punctuation. But it is true that lack of punctuation has become, itself, a form of punctuation. On Tumblr the lack of punctuation in multisentence-long posts creates the function of rhetorical speech, or speech that is not intended to have an answer, usually in the form of a question. Consider the following two potential posts. Each individual line should be taken as a post:

In your head, those two potential posts sound totally different. In the first one I’m ranting about work, and this requires no answer. The second may actually engage you to give an answer about hoarding sauce packets. And if you answer the first post, you will likely do so in the same style.
Here’s what makes this exciting: the English language has no actual punctuation for rhetorical speech–that is, there are no special marks that specifically indicate “this speech is in the abstract, and requires no answer.” Not only that, it never has. The first written record of English (actually proto-English, predating even Old English) dates to the 400s CE, so we’re talking about 1600 years of having absolutely no marker whatsoever for rhetorical speech.
A group of teens and young adults on a blogging website literally reshaped a deficit a millennium and a half old in our language to fit their language needs. More! This group has agreed on a more or less universal standard for these new rules, which fits the definition of “language.” Which is to say Tumblr English is its own actual, real, separate dialect of the English language, and because it is spoken by people worldwide who have introduced concepts from their own languages into it, it may qualify as a written form of pidgin.
Tumblr English should literally be treated as its own language, because it does not follow the rules of any form of formal written English, and yet it does have its own consistent internal rules. If you don’t think that’s cool as fuck then I don’t even know what to tell you.

I know I’m not the only woman out there who thinks that when I find my “signature scent” I’ll suddenly gain like seventy sophistication points. I’ll glide instead of walk, slipping around hard edges of furniture. My grandchildren will tell me I smell like beautiful things on fire. I will smell like the kind of woman who wears a fitted silk and lace dressing gown with all of her good jewelry.
Thus far in my life, despite the vapid promises of every single bottle of everything I’ve ever purchased, ever, I’ve managed to smell like any number of skinned fruits, scented toilet paper, and Macy’s.
So it was with a heavy heart and heavier side-eye that I deigned to try some solid perfume samples from an independent scent maker on Etsy. The descriptions I read were more fantastic than Elizabeth Arden yet less fantastic than Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab which seemed like a good safe zone. (Every time I order anything from BPAL I half expect it to be delivered to my window at midnight gripped in the curled fist of a Gryphon. It never does, it comes in the mail in the daytime eight weeks later and smells like someone poured Avon Skin So Soft over a cantaloupe.)
These samples that I ordered… I’m not even going to try to explain how incredible they are, I’m just going to tell you that I’m sitting here in a bias-skirted satin magenta gown and I’m not convinced I’m actually touching the sofa with any part of my body.

Or four. Or twenty, you can order twenty. I ordered three; one I really like, one I fucking love, and one I now carry around with me in my mouth.
Seriously. I don’t even know whose pearls these are. Just go.
Coincidental timing, reading this; I opened Tumblr just now to say how I'd had a moment of nostalgia last week that resulted in impulse-buying a small bottle of CKone and had it shipped to my parents' house. The package arrived two days ago, I arrived this morning and now I'm wearing it for the first time in like 13 years? And I want to like it again because it's such a light, clean sort of scent but my original CKone years were a pretty conflicting time and I only found out about this scent in the first place because it's what the cruise director who wooed me in the Bahamas when I was 16 was wearing.
I've been wearing Givenchy since college and have always gotten positive remarks on it, but it'd be nice to have something lighter, less night-on-the-town and more museums-and-picnics. Which I guess CKone could be were it not for all the mindfuckery. All this to say, I'll probably be ordering some Etsy perfume samples later today.
The nicest
There are some people who begin the Zoo at the beginning, called WAY IN, and walk as quickly as they can past every cage until they get to the one called WAY OUT, but the nicest people say, “Shall we just wander about?” and then after two hours of walking-- when you’ve reached the fork that goes to either the polar bears or the pandas and you ask, could we save the red pandas for the end of the day? because you feel there’s a better chance of seeing them up and about once the sun starts to go down-- say, “Of course!” so agreeably, and then they proceed to loop up and down and around the Zoo with you for *another* two hours before finally returning to this exact spot, whereupon you go straight to the animal you love the most** and stay there, bouncing with mesmerized delight, and even though they are about to collapse from hunger because of course you haven’t stopped for food all day, they never say a word that might initiate your separation from this moment that they know is giving you so much joy.
