He moved to hold her in his arms. The tea could wait. “Look, not that I’m agreeing with any of this, but what do you think I’m doing? As much as I care about your sister, once we’re married, I was planning on the two of us spending a little time together without our families. I want to get to know you as my wife without the in-laws, both yours and mine.” He sighed and added through gritted teeth. “Besides, I suppose one day when things have cooled down, you’d probably be able to visit her and any spawn they might have created.”
"Alright, alright, don’t get carried away, I see your point. And I don’t expect you to understand, it’s not your fault you’re an only child. I’m just going to take a little longer to get over it than you did, alright?" She took his hand, which rested on her shoulder and held it, trying to reassure him that what he was doing was comforting, though she could see it was a little forced, even for her.Â
"I know... I wish I knew what to say, but I don't... You're right, I wouldn't understand." He sighed and stroked her hair lightly, closing his eyes and listening to her breathing.
