A soft sigh, there. Ken’s too polite (right now) to sass someone he still has respect for, despite knowing they can be irresponsible, but the meaning behind that sigh’s probably too obvious. 

“O-oh…! Oh, wait, I just realized something. If Shinichi-san is your superior, that kinda makes me like an assistant to you too, though we’re not in the same division? …So, does that mean bringing you…uhm…st-stuff…would be irresponsible?”

He means to say ‘can I give you some Featherman comics I think you’d like them but I don’t know if it’s okay or if I should wait until after work’. Dorky justice child.

Hm... It appeared this boy had been familiar with Shinichi Kudou for at least some time before her arrival in Toshi. He seemed hesitant to criticize his “boss” even constructively, and was quick to change the subject to something unrelated to the head of the force at the first opportunity. Miyako supposed it was to be expected from one so young and inexperienced, but--

“O-oh…! Oh, wait, I just realized something. If Shinichi-san is your superior, that kinda makes me like an assistant to you too, though we’re not in the same division? …So, does that mean bringing you…uhm…st-stuff…would be irresponsible?”

“An assistant...? Given the difference in our divisions, I am unsure whether that is the case...but please know that you are free to come to my office with inquiries and the like regardless.”

Miyako smiled.

“You may not work directly under me, but as Superintendent, I consider it my duty to assist and guide all of my juniors in finding and fulfilling their true potential. So if you come to my office with questions or uncertainties regarding your tasks, I would not interpret it as irresponsibility in the least.

“Rather, I would consider it the opposite.”

No, you didn’t have Chie’s understanding. Heck protocol. (And considering Chie was, like, the only person in contact with Art for a while, yeah, she kind of was an emergency contact. In a way.)

But Chie did realize she’d be doing nothing good for herself if she kept chasing this line of thought, so she relented. …Actually, Miyako wasn’t smiling about it anymore. Maybe she really did want to tell her…?

“Alright, I understand.”

And now we’re back where we started. What to say…

“So, uh… are you getting used to your new job?”

She could not be sure if Chie was wholly satisfied by the response she’d received (frankly, Miyako doubted it), but her calm acceptance of it was certainly appreciated. If she was being honest, the young Superintendent did not tolerate insubordination or disobedience very well...

“Ah...yes, I believe I’ve adjusted quite well.” The faint traces of a smile returned to her lips as she spoke, calm and cool as ever. “I must admit, I was not initially accustomed to this type of workspace...but I believe I am acclimating sufficiently, both to my position and this city.

“Heh... It is all rather different from what I was used to in Sapporo, or even Tokyo.”

As they were in agreement, Arturia allowed herself to give consideration to the details that she had forestalled giving decisive judgement. Often, it was a natural process that she never truly examined it in steps, but it appeared that there were a few advantages to the diffident state of her recent thoughts. Primarily, she thought of transportation and scheduling, wondering at the best way to fit everything together.

Before she could become too absorbed in those finer points, Miyako addressed her in a manner that nearly returned her to earlier fondness that had been almost embarrassing.

Despite her objections on the basis of composure, she couldn’t help herself from answering with downy words. ❝As am I.❞ In stark contrast to her demeanor at the beginning of their conversation, she suddenly found herself wishing she could say more on the subject, to offer more than those few words.

Nonetheless, the severe hands of the clock were merciless in their reminder that she had already taken up far too much time with questions that pertained little to the matters of the TCDF. ❝I shall leave you to your work, then… unless there is anything else you would like to discuss?❞

For all intents and purposes, it seemed they were in accord. The date had been set for their cinematic excursion; all that remained was to choose a film and time. As much of her work for the day was completed, she could probably tend to those details immediately once she arrived back home...

Before that, though--

“Ah--a moment, if you please.” Miyako straightened up in her seat somewhat, expression turning inquisitive. “You had something you wished to speak with me about as well, did you not? I fear I may have inadvertently monopolized the conversation...”

Was she… starting to smile? Oh wow. Her opinion of Chie probably wasn’t too high right now. Great start, thumbs up.

So Art wasn’t in any definite danger… or, in other words, this was an official-sounding ‘no news is good news’. Well, at least there was a little truth in the saying, but it wouldn’t stop Chie from continuing her ‘diligence’– rather, her worrying.

But there was something a little off here.

“Sorry, I don’t really… understand. Art’s former right hand isn’t allowed the details of his disappearance? Seems a little… well…”

She could understand why Chie might be frustrated with the situation at present: Prior to Miyako’s instatement as Superintendent, Satonaka Chie and former-Superintendent Art had supposedly been quite friendly with one another. It was only natural that his second-in-command should worry about his sudden ‘disappearance’... However--

“It is merely protocol, Satonaka-san. I apologize, but I can tell you no more than what I have already. It might be a different story if you were a blood relative or registered emergency contact, but as things are...”

Miyako shook her head, smile fading.

“I hope I have your understanding in this matter.”

On Ms. Hotsuin’s response, Chie entered the Superintendent’s office for the first time in a long while. It was… different. Not obviously, of course– all her papers and such were as neat and orderly as Art used to keep them, maybe even a little more so, and the lack of particular decoration seemed to be another shared trait between the two. But there were still little things– their posture in the chair, the position of the pencil carrier on the desk, the inbox being a little less full, her name card being much longer than his– and Chie couldn’t help but linger on them.

“Oh, uh, likewise.” Miyako-san had only heard her name through documents? Chie hadn’t been that distant… had she? This introduction probably should have happened weeks ago, now that Chie honestly thought about it. …How fucked up is TCDF’s system???

So here she is, in the office like she wanted to be, talking to Miyako-san like she wanted to, and…

Well. Uh.

There was a notable pause as Chie tried to formulate something to talk about… then she remembered something.

“Uh, well, I filed a request for an update on the Art situation a while back, but I never got a response. I thought I’d check on it because… well…”

Well, Chie? Are you going to share your reasons for constantly worrying about Art? Sharing is caring.

Miyako waited patiently for Chie to compose herself and formulate her response, lips quirking slightly upward in a faint smile. This seemed to be a recurring trait in a small handful of her subordinates: Always so nervous to stand before her, and often unsure of what to say once they’d stated their reasons for coming, if not before that. It was a curious thing...--

However, it would not do to press them. They’d find their voices soon enough, just as Satonaka Chie had just now.

“’The Art situation’... Ah, you refer to the investigation of former-Superintendent Art’s whereabouts.” Miyako clasped her hands atop her desk and fell silent a moment, contemplative, before going on. “I respect your diligence in the matter...though, unfortunately, I am not at liberty to discuss any details.”

It wasn’t a lie...but she doubted that answer alone would satisfy the woman before her. So--

“... I will tell you that nothing we have found thus far indicates Art-san is in any danger. Please be patient with us a while longer; the moment we conclude this search, you will be notified.”

Some Things Never Change

It had been quite some time since Alcor had set foot back into Toshi City, and the first course of action was to visit one of his favourite spot. A beautiful park; an expanse of green and a wondrous example of the harmony between nature and civilization. In the months Alcor had been gone, the place had not changed.

Unfortunately…neither had its inhabitants. And he could only imagine the serenity the park offered him before a familiar, hair-raising honking raised every single hair on the back of his neck.

And he was running again, tearing his way through the park with a flock of angry geese at his heels.

With every survival instinct firing, Alcor knew first he must find a place to hide. Taking hold of the person closest to him, he ducked behind…before realizing that the figure he had chosen as his human shield was very much familiar.

“Oh…”

“Miyako Hotsuin…?”

No… He hadn’t meant to involve a dear friend in this skirmish. He tugged on her arm, an urgency in his voice as he glanced at the approaching flock.

“We must flee this place immediately!”

Over the past several weeks, the park had become something of a regular place for Miyako to enjoy her lunch. It was hardly difficult to understand her choice in location; the space was typically quiet and free of the babble often heard in the more urbanized sections of the city, and very rarely was she called or disturbed here. Workaholic though she was (according to a few subordinates), even Miyako Hotsuin could appreciate a short reprieve to clear her mind; and this park was most often the perfect place to find it.

That was why she was startled when a flash of red and white all but flew by her as she made her way across the park grounds--and then ducked behind her, of all absurd things. What was...--?

“Wh--? Alcor...?”

It when she turned to face the cowering man that she recognized him. That was most definitely Alcor--and he seemed to recognize her as well, but...

“We must flee this place immediately!”

“Flee? Why?” Her brow furrowed in confusion as he tugged on her arm, and she quickly turned her head to survey the surrounding area. There were very few places for a pursuer to hide here, so what could have Alcor so frazzled...?

“Besides us, the only others here are the geese. What happened?”

THE BROTHER RETURNS.

❝I see.❞ It was true that it was occasionally remarked that the superintendent had a notoriously solemn disposition, though she had not come across it in earnest. Perhaps her fellow TCDF members were more playful than first expected? 

― At this thought, she remembered the crash of at least one window.

Alternative suggestions were posed, having their merits and generally following the blonde’s thoughts. ❝I would not mind.❞ It had been her first instinct to make a suggestion along those lines, possessing a slight preference for the adventure and the fantastical realms depicted therein in comparison to movies based more strongly in the everyday. Yet essentially, as outlined in the decision she had earlier recollected, regardless of the type of movie to which Miyako was predisposed, Arturia would find some enjoyment in it from that fact alone.

In order to succinctly convey this and simplify matters, she made a small statement with a sincere smile that came more from her eyes than her lips. ❝Think of your choice as my own. I would be happy to watch anything.❞

“I see... You have my gratitude.”

It was a gracious gesture to be sure, and one Miyako didn’t believe to have been made solely for the sake of humoring her. From what she had observed, after all, Arturia was a fairly straightforward person; if she was truly opposed to Miyako’s suggestion of which film to see, the latter trusted that her subordinate would speak up and advise against it. 

She’d be ‘happy to watch anything’... Arturia was quite kind, and very patient. Miyako truly did appreciate that, embarrassing though the need for it was.

“An action film, then. I will take time tonight to see which movies of that genre are currently playing in theaters.”

Her first movie... Her first casual get-together... Hah, if she was being honest--

“I’m quite looking forward to this.”

Small it may have been, the gentle joy at her acceptance ignited a ball of warmth that nestled close to her heart. All the doubts that had held her back at the office door seemed all the more foolish now that their apparitions were cast in that metaphorical light. Everything had gone better than she had even dared to hope.

On the more technical matters now, she did her best to dismiss her sentimentality. It would be an important consideration, as in an arrangement such as this, the quality of the movie would be key. ❝I have not paid much attention to recent theatrical releases, but there are a number of trends that appear.❞ Spring was, she had found, a more relaxed period of time, as it served as the lull before the usual host of summer blockbusters. ❝There will likely be a romantic comedy, though most of the trailers I have seen were for action movies.❞

Despite all that she had said and the research she had not mentioned in her answer, a concrete plan had not truly been formed. The prior night she had decided that, as long as Miyako was the one with whom she was watching, the genre was not of great concern.  ❝We could simply chose based on which poster catches the eye.❞

A...romantic comedy? Hm. She’d heard the term before, but the subject matter had never truly piqued Miyako’s interest. She was given to understand that films of this genre were mostly intended for a female audience, and usually followed a certain narrative formula. Supposedly, they were fairly popular amongst civilians, but especially because half of that formula included jokes--

“Would you be opposed to seeing an action movie?” Miyako asked after a moment. “I would certainly be willing to wait until we’re actually at the theater to decide, but I’m afraid I may not comprehend the humor of a comedy-based film...”

A sense of humor had not exactly been encouraged, after all, while she was growing up. There had always been other, more important lessons to learn--lessons more relevant to the duties she may assume later on--and she had been expected to take them seriously. There had been no time for frivolities...

(That, and...it would not be fair if Arturia had to spend the movie explaining the gags to her, either. She wanted her companion to enjoy the outing as well, especially given that Miyako had been the one to invite her out.)

“Ah, but--there are other genres as well, are there not?”

    Well this certainly wasn’t going as planned. Had he said that she needed to pay for it? Didn’t he just… offer it? Oh, she must be misinterpreting… Jae-ha shook his head, and didn’t move the cake from where he held it to her. “Ah, you’re mistaking me, sweetheart. I’m not asking you to pay for it.” And held it forward, insisting, almost. 

    “It’s just an act of kindness.” He almost wanted to add, please take it so I don’t make a complete fool out of myself– but he still had some pride left in him. But seeing her initial reaction, he could guess that he was probably going to get painfully rejected. Oh well. Let’s hope nothing too bad happens.

... Sweetheart? That was a common term of endearment, was it not? She didn’t know this man, though--why would he call her by a name typically reserved for those with a closer relationship?

She didn’t quite understand...and frankly, it felt just unnatural. No one had ever referred to her in such an informal manner before. It was...slightly embarrassing...

Before she could begin to protest, though, the stranger continued in an attempt to clarify his intentions. An act of kindness, he said...? Were exchanges such as this common amongst civilians? Whether it was or not, she had no reason to reject his offer, but...--

“Ah...thank you, then. I will enjoy it.”

Miyako accepted the box, and offered the man a small smile.

“I truly do wish I could repay your kindness, though. From what I have heard, this brand is a bit more expensive than most others...”
