it's a game absolutely lousy with flaws such as "pokemon was almost completely unplayable before the physical/special split" and "the difficulty curve in this game was designed by an actual chimpanzee" but it's hard Not to appreciate the way the game intentionally engaged with nostalgia for its predecessors that were only a few years old at that point in a way that has only become more potent over time

super mario 64 is absolutely hysterical to me because like. in most other mario games, the plumber has some sort of whimsical method of fighting his enemies. he has power-ups, and a magic water jetpack, and a star child that makes him spin around, and a ghost hat that possesses various other critters. in mario 64, though? the guy just punches the shit out of everything and throws them around with his bare ass hands. like, he's not even jumping on them for the most part! he's just whaling on them!

there was this air of optimism in american culture that bled through it's art in the 90s and y2k era stuff. people were genuinely looking toward the future with bright eyes. then of course 9/11 happened and it went terrible. this is known.

but the second wave of optimism that came with the first term of obama and during the housing market crash and ensuing recession, that felt less like hope and more "let's all just die. let's die. fuck it. let's die." genuine hits of music all about how shits fucked forever. everyone was aware things sucks. no hope anymore for anything. and that wave was more enjoyable tbh
