https://ahan-analytics.drduru.com/2023/08/27/convoluted-california-carpool-lane/
Carpool lanes started as a simple energy-conservation and pollution-reducing incentive: multiple people riding in a car get access to a special lane that typically moves faster than other lanes of traffic. Over time, transportation agencies and regional governments have piled on a range of goodies into these lanes. Electric vehicles and hybrids got special access to carpool lanes. Next, money got special access where you could pay to play no matter your car or occupancy. These goodies provided the rich with ways to move faster than everyone else. These goodies also priced out and thus excluded the poor.

Last week, the founder of my mental health charity - ROSES, Inc. (https://www.rosescharity.com/) - asked us on social media to share what we appreciate because "what we focus on, we get more of." Well, my vignette of appreciation is about the simple pleasures in life that can make a big personal impact.

In recent years, I discovered dark chocolate covered grahams at Starbucks. If I ever found myself in a store, I would look for a pack or two of the delicious treat (note I am not a coffee drinker). There was even a serendipitous evening when I was hanging out late with a cousin at a family reunion, and a nearby Starbucks loaded me up with their remaining stash right before closing time...for free! But, over the past year or so, these grahamas got harder and harder to find.
I wrote to Starbucks and got a non-answer about what was going on. Things got so bad that one day I decided to call all the Starbucks within about a 5 mile radius. Not a single location had them. Two of the locations "admitted" what I had feared - Starbucks had decided to stop selling the grahams.
One day, my daughter did a search on the internet and found a Reddit post from someone who revealed the original maker of these grahams, Jo's Candies. (It NEVER occurred to me that Starbucks was distributing someone else’s product!). I wrote to Jo’s to confirm stores for buying the grahams and got a quick response: TJMaxx and Marshalls. Yet, still, I was only able to find the grahams in two local stores and both had just one or two packages (yes, anytime I went out, I'd check to see whether one of these stores was nearby!).
FINALLY, on a trip, I found a TJMaxx with a cornucopia. Jackpot! I was tempted to snatch everything they had, but I "only" took 5. I visited a different day, and, much to my delight, they had already restocked the shelf. So of course I grabbed a bunch more. (Don't worry, I was in collection mode, NOT over-indulgent mode).
Anyway, this story is one of appreciation FIRST for my daughter. I consider her small gesture to be a BIG demonstration of her care and concern for Daddy. She's actually looking out for me. 🙂 Second, I appreciate these dark chocolate covered grahams for enabling me to enjoy a guilty pleasure without weighing me down (so to speak). As I get older, my list of dietary no-nos grows larger and larger. But these treats easily fit within my limits of modesty, and I hope to appreciate them for many years to come...because it is one simple pleasure that brings much joy.
It may sound trite and cliche by now, but finding ways to appreciate and to show gratitude even for the small stuff are key components for mental health in a world that offers so many toxic traps. "What we focus on, we get more of."

Latest commentary on the stock market with a chartapalooza
Carpool lanes started as a simple energy-conservation and pollution-reducing incentive: multiple people riding in a car get access to a special lane that typically moves faster than other lanes of traffic. Over time, transportation agencies and regional governments have piled on a range of goodies into these lanes. Electric vehicles and hybrids got special access to carpool lanes. Next, money got special access where you could pay to play no matter your car or occupancy. These goodies allowed the rich ways to move faster than everyone else and specifically excluded the poor.
Now, it seems there is some recognition of the inequality and unfairness built into these goodie schemes. The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is experimenting with "Express Lanes Start" that offers access to the carpool lane (now called Express Lanes) at a 50% discount for those who meet maximum income requirements. The starting premise on the website (https://www.expresslanesstart.org) made me laugh outright: "Do you need to travel in the I-880 Express Lanes?" Uh, yeah. I SURE DO! I want to get from A to B faster than everyone else!
The carpool lanes are a classic example of how a simple concept has become overly complicated by layer upon layer of government policies and programs either offering goodies to certain constituencies or fixing one problem with new problems. If the idea of high occupancy lanes is to reduce cars on the road and reduce pollution, then, please oh please, let's get back to the "good ol' days." The rich and poor alike can find like-minded people to share a ride!
My bewilderment with these schemes is compounded by the eye-bleed prices often charged to travel even just a few miles. For those who know Highway 880, you have a direct sense of the expense involved: Going north on Interstate 880 on May 23, 2023 (distances from Google maps)...
Fremont Cushing (where Tesla is) to Mowry is 4.7 miles and costs $7
Fremont Cushing to Decoto is 7.5 miles and costs $11.75
Just before Alvarado to Whipple is 2.5 miles and costs $7
Just before Alvarado to Esperian/238 is 9.2 miles and costs $14
Someone PLEASE explain this pricing to me! My youngest brother explains that the prices are set to keep traffic moving at the speed limit. But these prices are SO high that surely only the very rich and very rushed will be willing to pay? An express lane for the elite. Not even a 50% discount strikes me as worth it. This scheme strikes me more as a way to scare up revenues than to save energy or reduce pollution.

Making A Left Turn in California? Understand Right-Of-Way!
In recent years, I have informally observed a disturbing increase in the number of drivers who appear not to understand the rules of the road. One particularly dangerous misunderstanding deals with the right-of-way, especially when a driver is making a left turn. For example, in my neighborhood, I frequently witness drivers racing into their left turns in an effort to beat opposing traffic trying to make right turns. This rush can become so intense that these drivers lose track of approaching traffic that is coming straight through the intersection. I even see drivers rushing to beat pedestrians who are entering the crosswalk.
The basic rule for making left turns: yield to ALL on-coming traffic AND pedestrians. If you are making a left turn, you DO NOT have the right-of-way in the intersection unless the traffic signal or other signs specifically grant you the right-of-way. Here is what the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) says (emphasis mine):
When you turn left, give the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching that are close enough to be dangerous. Also, look for motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Safety suggestion: While waiting to turn left, keep your wheels pointed straight ahead until it is safe to start your turn. If your wheels are pointed to the left, and a vehicle hits you from behind, you could be pushed into oncoming traffic.
Here are the specifics from California law on the rules of the road (VEHICLE CODE - VEH DIVISION 11. RULES OF THE ROAD [21000 - 23336] CHAPTER 4. Right-of-Way [21800 - 21809]) (emphasis mine):
21801. (a) The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety.
Again, when you make a left turn, you MUST yield to ALL on-coming traffic. Even when you are in the middle of a left turn, you must come to a STOP if a vehicle approaches close enough to you to present a danger as you complete the turn.
When you make a left turn after yielding right-of-way, still do it safely. For example, do not swing out to further lanes because you are in a rush to get around a pedestrian crossing the street. Your misplaced focus may cause you to miss another hazard. Also, try to make the tightest left turn that you can even though you technically can turn into any lane you choose; I find it safer to do so. Again, from the California Vehicle Code on right-of-way:
2210 (3)(b) Left Turns. The approach for a left turn shall be made as close as practicable to the left-hand edge of the extreme left-hand lane or portion of the roadway lawfully available to traffic moving in the direction of travel of the vehicle and, when turning at an intersection, the left turn shall not be made before entering the intersection.
I implore you drivers - respect right-of-way rules! The safety of everyone is at stake here. According to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), accidents at intersections are disturbingly high:
Driving through an intersection is one of the most complex traffic situations motorists encounter. Intersection collisions account for more than 45% of all reported crashes and 21% of fatalities according to the Federal Highway Administration.

Falcons Vs Patriots prophecy
And so it was prophesied... Matthew 14:22-33.... In the year of our Lord 2017, approximately February 5th, the Falcons called upon the Lord in fervent prayer. Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” “Lord, if it’s you,” the Falcons replied, “tell us to come to you on the field. We want to believe we can win. Even DESTROY the Patriots.” “Come,” He said. "And taste the sweet nectar of victory and rain defeat upon your tormentors." Then the Falcons rushed out onto the field and came toward Jesus. With less than 4 minutes to go in the third quarter, the Falcons looked up in disbelief. Not only were their prayers being answered, but also they could revel in abundance. And yet, they could not believe it was real. When time of possession began to take its toll on the defense, and the Falcons noticed the determination in Brady's steely eyes, they began to fear. Beginning to sink, the Falcons cried out, “Lord, save us!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught the Falcons. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt? I will show mercy and grant you overtime to regain your faith.” And yet, when the Falcons looked up at the scoreboard again, the roar of the crowd had silenced. The Patriots had departed with the victory, leaving the Falcons behind to wonder. They had missed the boat. The ship had sailed. Now they were left to feed off prayer to get through the off-season and re-learn how to BELIEVE again. And so it was said. It is done.
