I was laying in my bed reading my book for History class. I couldn’t focus, so I was just rereading the same page over and over again hoping I would memorize it.
I jumped 3 feet off of my bed when I heard the loudest knock on my door, followed by the annoyed high pitched scream of my older brother, Lamelo.
He literally drives me crazy every chance he gets. If he’s not trying to scare me, he’s beating me with pillows. If he’s not beating me with pillows, he’s messing up my hair. If he’s not messing up my hair, he’s calling me ugly. It’s a constant battle in my mind between how much I love him, and how badly I want to smack the shit outta him sometimes.
“Lia, I need a favor and you’re gonna do it so don’t even argue,” he said.
“I probably won’t do it, and I’m definitely going to argue,” I responded with a smile, while I watched Melo upturn the corner of his mouth and look at me like he couldn’t stand me.
“You know that friend of yours, Mariah?” He said, winking at me.
Jesus, I knew that’s what he wanted. He’s always flirting with my friends. He’s the reason I lose so many friends. He plays them and then they blame me. I don’t understand why he gets to be Lamelhoe and I don’t even get to get within five feet of a boy unless it’s Zo, Gelo, Melo, Dad, or Eli. All of the boys that drive me insane.
“Um, yes, and if you’re asking me if I can hook you up with her just so you can fuck her, the answer is no, you hoe.”
Lamelo got off of my bed and started to walk to the door, then turned around charging towards me. I’ve never moved so quickly in my life. He might look scrawny, but he’s actually pretty strong.
Melo grabbed the body pillow from off of my bed and flung it at my head as hard as he could. It hit me straight in the face, and I knew I had to take advantage of this perfect opportunity.
“DADDDDDDDDD! Hurry!” I screamed, as I flung myself on the ground, squinting my eyes, and pretending like I hit my head on the closet door. I gripped the back of my head and started rolling around on the floor.
I heard what sounded like a herd of buffalo running up the stairs. In ran Gelo, Zo, Dad, and Ejay. They all looked mortified. My plan was working, and fake tears were my specialty.
Melo and I were close in age. Not even two full years apart. He was about to turn 16, and I was 14 1/2. He was protective, but not nearly as bad as Gelo, Zo, and Eli.
I could tell by the look in Zo’s eyes that he was ready to kill Melo.
I let the fake tears pour down my cheeks as Gelo rushed by my side and Zo grabbed Melo by the front of his shirt. Dad picked me up off of the floor and kissed me on the forehead asking if I was okay.
“What the fuck is wrong with you, bitch?! She’s half your size!” Zo yelled.
“She’s faking that shit. I barely hit her! Let go of me!” Melo screamed back in his high pitched voice, trying to escape Zo’s hands.
“You’re a fucking idiot,” Gelo said, and Zo shook his head agreeing.
“Melo, get your ass over here right now!” Dad yelled, pointing at the ground in front of him.
As Melo made his way to dad he looked like a scared puppy, and he should have been. The second he was within arms reach of dad he got slapped right on the back of his head, sending his head flying forward.
I smiled, my job was done. He deserved it after making me lose so many friends and always bugging me. I didn’t feel bad in the slightest.
Zo, Gelo, and Ejay all stood by the door laughing.
“Are you okay?” Gelo and Zo asked at the same time.
“I’m okay,” I responded, sniffling like I was really crying. They were also assholes a lot of the time, but they were overprotective as hell. When I tell you I can’t do much of anything, I mean I literally can’t do anything.
“Get your ass over in that bedroom, son, before I beat your ass with a belt boy!” Dad yelled.
Melo got away with a lot. He could curse, sleep with random girls, say stupid shit, do whatever he wanted at school, but the one thing he couldn’t get away with was messing with me.
“Wait! Before you go over there come hug your baby sister and tell her you’re sorry... now.”
Melo slowly walked over to me with his head hanging low, hunched over, gave me a half ass hug, and whispered in my ear, “I’ll get you back for this, Lia.”
