I have this headcanon that, much as he loves Hope and Robin, Gideon also kind of resents them because their villainous parents changed for them but his didn’t for him and he keeps wondering why he wasn’t enough for his father and why they deserved parents who loved them enough to change but he didn’t.*
*this ofc all happens in my own little universe where Rumple is dead and Gideon grew up in Storybrooke with Hope and Robin as his best friends.

He let himself melt into his hold, trying to will himself calm, for his heart to stop racing. He dropped his head to Liam’s shoulder, unable to keep eye contact without his mask slipping further.
“I‘m not, not really.” He wasn’t completely sure who he was trying to convince. It wasn’t a lie, he didn’t think that. He didn’t. But what he thought didn’t seem to matter to the fear. It was like it had a mind of its own, and however much he tried to reason it away, it never made any difference.
“Its…I…” He squeezed his eyes shut in frustration, not sure what he was trying to say. Part of him wanted to spill everything, part of him couldn’t help but fear that this would just drive Liam away again.
fingers slide into gideon’s hair, nails gently scratching at his scalp in an attempt to offer him further comfort. liam patiently waits for him to collect his thoughts, but when there’s a long enough pause, he concludes that gideon isn’t sure what he wants to say. or how he wants to say it. or if he even can.
which is a stab through liam’s chest. because he knows this problem is brought on by his disappearance, that it’s entirely his fault gideon’s feeling this way. proof of the long term damage he’s done to his lover & to their relationship.
“gideon, love,” liam whispers, pressing a kiss to the side of his head as his arm wraps fully around gideon’s body in a hug. “tell me what’s in that head of yours. i swear i’m not going anywhere, no matter what you say. let me help you work through it. please.”

“It’s not what's going on in my head that’s the problem.” He let out a choked laugh. “In my head I know this is stupid.”
“It’s just recently I started feeling scared all the time, so much it hurts. And I don’t understand where it’s coming from. I trust you.” He pulled away so he could look Liam in the eye. “I swear I trust you.”
“I hate it, I don’t want to feel like this and I don’t know how to make it stop.” He hated it even more now it wasn’t just hurting him, but hurting Liam as well. He hadn’t wanted him to know, hoped he would be able to act like everything was fine long enough for whatever it was to stop.

“Ok, I’ll call Mom tomorrow, but I’m pretty sure she’ll be up for it.” More that pretty sure to tell the truth, she had been less than subtle in her enquiries about the roommate he talked so much about. She’d probably jump at the chance. And he thought it would be good for her, she was finding it harder than he was to adjust to having a life again.
“Sunscreen, check. And I think I’d like to learn, not sure how useful I’ll be, but I’ll give it a try.” He was already mentally planning reading material to prepare. Though honestly he’d probably be up for anything Liam wanted to show him. “Was the plan to sail somewhere specific?”
“doesn’t matter how useful you are as long as you’re having fun,” liam assures him. it usually takes more than a weekend to become decent at any of the simpler tasks required to sail, after all. “can’t get too far in just a couple days, so we’re gonna stick close to the coast, sail north then head back down. we don’t usually do anything too extensive until the longer breaks where we can actually go somewhere.” mostly in the summer, really, when they have a couple months to wander the ocean without having to worry about getting back home quickly.
“& no homework on the boat. it’s supposed to be a mini vacation so make sure you have anything due right after done before we leave. otherwise i’m throwing it overboard,” he playfully threatens, pointing a finger at gideon. “you can bring a book if you want, but i’d suggest waiting to see how you are with getting seasick first.”
“A book? Have you met me?” He gave a pointed look to the books piled up around his half of the room. Having his studying done would be easy enough, he never left anything to that last minute anyway, always getting everything done as soon as possible so he could spend time on his own stuff worry free.
“I don’t think I’ll get sea sick. I’ve not been sailing before, but I have been on ferries and the like. And I don’t get any other kind of motion sickness.” He really hoped he didn’t, that would put a dampener on things. “I suppose we’ll just have to see how it goes.”

He laughed at Liam’s delightfully predictable reaction, half the reason he had suggested it in the first place. Not that it wasn’t a good idea, of course, something the school would like to incorporate no doubt.
“Exactly, Nemo will love showing off his pride and joy.” And it would give the crew at least something of a purpose staying here, which he had a vested interest in.
The feeling of welcome that came from Granny, and the familiar banter with Liam, warmed him in a way he still found hard to understand or even believe. He wasn’t sure he would ever get used to it.
He was definitely having his usual, even it would come with complaints of too much sugar and fat and not enough vegetables. But he found he wasn’t in any rush anymore, however hungry he was. And if he was sure he must have some stupid lovesick look on his face as watched Liam across the table, he couldn’t really bring himself to care.
he’s focused on his menu & figuring out just what his cravings are at the moment, that he doesn’t notice gideon’s staring at first. it’s only when he glances up as he takes another sip of his coffee that he does finally notice, & he grins into his mug. it isn’t the first time he’s caught gideon staring at him like that, & though it took a little bit to get used to, it’s absolutely become one of his favorite reoccurring moments between the pair of them.
seeing his boyfriend so happy & content always improves his mood, no matter what it had been beforehand, & knowing he’s the reason for it only increases his own happiness. “what’s running through that head of yours, pretty boy? you don’t usually look like that unless we’re alone.”
“Nothing much, just how lucky I am.” He tried to think about how best to put into words what he was feeling.
“I’d say I never expected to have all this,” He made a general sweeping gesture around them. “But that isn’t really right. I never knew to think anything like this was possible, wouldn’t have believed it if you told me. Even after I was free, I never thought I could be accepted.”
“I’d’ve probably stayed holed up in that library forever if it hadn’t been for you.” He reached across the table, tangling his fingers with Liam’s. “You helped me stop hiding, and that means so much to me.”

“Not likely.” He snorted in response. “She reminds me too much of my father. Just can’t work out how she did it.”
“don’t know & don’t really care. just keep her away from me or i might do something stupid.” she does still owe him, after all, & he’s not likely to ever forgive regina, not when she keeps fucking him & his life over.

“No, but it really doesn’t make sense.” None of it did, Regina being crowned queen of the realms, Mother going back to his father after everything. Any way he went over it, it just didn’t add up. “I don’t know, maybe I just don’t want to believe it.”

a soft laugh escapes him, head dropping to nose against gideon’s shoulder, arms gently squeezing tighter around him. “i guess that means we’ll have to go visit her the next time we have a chance.” which could be a while from now, considering liam is 100% certain that killian is going to lay down some wicked punishment for his disobedience come morning, preventing him from leaving the ship for any personal reason for some time.
“how did you meet this emma, anyway?” he asks, humming quietly next to gideon’s ear, his face still happily buried in the other’s shoulder & neck. “she’s one of your magic buddies, right?”
He wanted to bang his head against the wall again, this time just for being stupid. He’d just had to open that door, hadn’t he? It wasn’t like he wasn’t going to tell the truth, of course he was, he wanted to for so long now, but maybe not as the opening to their sharing. It was going to be embarrassing to admit, what had seemed reasonable at the time now felt cruel and petty. He tipped his head back, not able to look at Liam while he spilled the truth.
“Yes, she’s powerful, maybe more than me. She’s had proper training, and has been teaching me when we can get together. We met, well...through Roland. She’shisgirlfriend.” He finally managed to spit out the words that had been fighting to escape for so long.
“Well actually fiance now, I got an invite to their engagement thing a few days ago. I had begun to wonder if he was ever going to ask, and apparently so had she so she took matters into her own hands.” The joyful letters from both of them had been bittersweet to read, despite how truly happy he was for them. He knew he was rambling, going off on a tangent, but couldn’t stop himself.
