I’m bugged by people who only consider “useful” things or people that can materially provide something, or work for you. I’m not saying there isn’t any priority order to things, but my cat isn’t “useless” because he doesn’t catch mice (I don’t have any mice at home, to his great dismay). He is useful because I find him beautiful to watch and I like groping soft animals that purr.

It’s not that you shouldn’t give priority to survival, if you have to choose between surviving and being happy for a short period of time. But pretending emotional or aesthetical needs don’t exist condemns people to live all their life in survival mode.
