On September 19, 1962, the NiƱa II, an authentic replica of the smallest of Columbusā caravels, set sail for the New World from Spain. It was a daring exploit, for the crew of nine men were determined to go exactly as Columbus had, to find out how mariners of Columbusā time lived on board their sailing ships. Not only was the ship itself as authentic in design and construction as they could make it, the men also decided they would eat the same kinds of food and navigate with fifteenth-century instruments.
Trouble began almost immediately. Like Columbus, they were harried by delays in sailing. Only days after leaving land much of their food had spoiled, and soon the water supply became so foul they could hardly drink it. The tiny forty-two-foot ship, hit by a hurricane, began to leak. Blown off course, buffeted by storms, or drifting for weeks in the calms of the Sargasso Sea, the NiƱa II and her crew were almost given up for lost. And then, on Christmas night, ninety-seven days after her departure from Palos, Spain, the NiƱa II reached Columbusā land fall, San Salvadorā¦ā
