Concept Art - Tutorial
19 days late letās go. This is a quick tutorial on my process for concept art, this works for both character and environmental design.
READ: Iām serious start reading concept art books, from stuff you enjoy of course. Iām into film so I look into Disney/Pixar art books mostly and learn how these artists create their work. The process and thought behind it is the most important. Donāt just copy what they do, actually break it down and study it properly. I subscribed to Scribd for this.
Moodboard: I assume you have an idea of what you want to design, now itās time to get a feel for it. Create a moodboard, which is not about the designs, but the overall feeling of what you want. Gather any images and have this up when you are designing. The point is to focus on the feeling the audience will get when looking at your work. This is part of the moodboard I made for Skull-Kidz! A dark, purplish world influenced by Halloween, anime and action.
Tip: Have an equal mixture of both real life images and artists influences. Download PureRef, when you get the chance, itās a great program.
Research and References: Look at real life references when designing and try to keep artist influences at a minimum or not at all. For Salem I took a trip on Google-Maps and went to the Czech Republic, Mont Saint Michel and Brooklyn for references. I wanted Salem to have a creepy, crowded, castle vibe mixed with old European architecture.
Tip: Thereās nothing bad about looking at other artistās work, but when you design from it you run the risk of making generic, or unoriginal designs. Donāt worry this is a common rookie mistake, you need to find your own interpretation/style of stuff.
Thumbnails: Itās time to make small drawings of what youāre designing as quickly as you can. Thereās no bad ideas, just get it down, only keep in mind the feeling/shape of what you want. A towering city of lanterns, that has a certain trapped and bleakness nature to it, is what I was going for with Salem. I mixed lanterns, chandeliers, spiderwebs, trees, bird cages, with the original references to create something unique.
Sketch: Pick the thumbnail you like the best and roll with it, making a bigger version of it but still quite rough. Once you have the overall look of your design you can get to refining and tweaking it.
Final: The last part is to just keep exploring your design, draw it from many angles, pick out a color scheme, and polish your work. Like I said the process is the same for characters: references, thumbnails, sketches, exploration, color, etc. These are all pretty consistent steps I found with many concept folks and artbooks. The most important thing, being feeling, always think critically about your designs. Itās not just how cool it looks, it should always work towards the mood your story, and help the audience understand what youāre going for. The more careful thought you put into your work, the better it will become. Good luck designing!

Hey, friends!
Itās Meg! Sorry about the late TUTOR TUESDAY, but Iām here! Today we take a look at drawing environments! This uses our last tutorial on perspective, so if you havenāt check that out! If you have any recommendations, sendĀ āem in here or my personal! Keep practicing, have fun, and Iāll see you next week!
A video process of how I painted āBreatheā. I feel like I didnāt get to fully express the concept with this image and I plan on doing a different one in the future. I really want to properly capture how I felt while suffocating in the polluted air of my birth land.Ā

Identifying witches
An open witch: just enter their house there are like 80 candles and rocks and stars and leaves and shit everywhere you are just tripping over it
A kitchen witch: their kitchen is hands down the coolest part of the house with awesome spices and organisation and deco and their house smells amazing
Hedge witch: check for a dehydrator or massive amounts of parchment paper
An urban witch: their living space is covered in the most random, seemingly irrelevant stuff that they are super attached to
Pagan witch: altars to different deities everywhere and so many pentacles everywhere why is there one in the toilet damn what
Christian witch: house is covered in fairies and Angels in paintings and statues itās like what
Neo-pagan: their gem stone collection can only be rivalled by the state rock museum ( either that or they are a Steven universe fan :p )
A closet witch: check the drawers for books Check the drawers man
Satanic witch: lots of silver on their altar and most of their closet is black or sexy.
Gothic witch: their house IS black and sexy and full of bones
A spoonie witch: their athame is in the kitchen and there is random candle wax around the house and you just have no idea what happened but this one corner of the house has great energy
Sigil witch: why is there a sigil on every napkin what is life who are you
Tarot focused: they have like 80 tarot decks and half havenāt even been opened and they are super defensive about
A witching: starter kits, specialty candles, and they have a few books on Wicca they bought accidentally
