For a moment, Heather just looked him over. Took note of all
the changes, however minuscule. There weren’t many. Not
when compared to last time they’d been reunited after a few
years apart. They had both probably grown some, but Heather
was quite certain she’d grown out, while Hiccup had grown up.
And she meant that more than just literally. He seemed a bit
older to her now; had more of a mature air.
She had no idea how she appeared to him. She hardly bothered
to pay much attention to her appearance these days, going for
comfort, protection, and stealth above all else. Her armor had
gotten some upgrades just as the duo axe on her back, and
she was sure it looked like she hadn’t bathed in quite some time.
As a matter of fact, she hadn’t. She probably reeked of dirt, body
odor, and dried blood. She had no idea the current state of her
face; whether what she felt caked on her eyes was more black
warpaint or remnants of her latest journey.
So much more had changed than the outside. She suddenly, in
the presence of Hiccup, felt so very aged; so different from the
girl he’d first met who still held on to some innocence and knew
how to yield it as a weapon when she needed to. She didn’t
bother with such cheap tricks now. No, these days, she’d
learned that she got much farther with a bit of strategy and
fierce brutality.
Though she was sure her face had become quite somber with
her memories, she managed to crack a smile at Hiccup’s
compliment - however polite he might have been trying to be.
“You’re not the best liar, you know. We’re getting
by, right girl? You tell him.”
Looking over at her dragon, she gave a smirk as Windshear
crooned lightly, giving an exaggerated nod in response. Heather
reached out, pulling the razorwhip’s head to her for a light, quick
embrace.
“Windshear’s always got my back, and I’ve always
got her’s. We’ve helped each other out of quite a
few… sticky situations. Haven’t we?” The dragon
gave a huff of agreement, turning back to Toothless
the instant she was released. Even dragons needed
to catch up, she supposed.
Remembering the mention of Astrid, Heather felt a spark of excitement
at getting to see her friend again, which was quickly followd by a slight,
knowing smirk.
“So, Astrid’s here too, huh? You two still
attached at the hip, then?”
Hiccup took a moment to really take Heather in, her eyebrows furrowing in quiet concern. He really hated to see her go after the who Dagur a few years prior, he had felt that she shouldn’t be alone, and he knew that Astrid had felt the same way. They’d both simply wanted to help Heather, but, ultimately, they couldn’t force her to stay, and she had a lot she clearly needed to think about.
She’d definitely aged, but it was more than a physical thing. He could feel it radiating from her very being. Clearly, the past few years hadn’t been too kind. As it happened, however, her physical appearance, (though it did make him worry what she’d suffered) didn’t repel him in any way.
He lived with Vikings, he’d seen (and smelt) worse.
He forced a smile as she accused him of lying, though he hadn’t intended it t obe that way, both the smile and the lie.
“I can tell, but It’s been a little rough, huh?”
As he glanced at Windshear, his lips pulled up into a real, more genuine smile. He supposed that was a positive. Heather hadn’t been completely alone, she’d had Windshear to keep her company and keep her safe. He knew what a difference a dragon companion could make. He’d be.. well, he’d be nothing without Toothless.
Probably still a sad little sap still yearning for his father’s approval.
The thought of his father caused a smile to freeze on his face, recalling the conversation that they’d had the day he’d left for this thing. He hadn’t even tld Astrid yet, it just hadn’t.. cme out. He was running from it, and he felt more than a little ashamed of himself.
Shaking out of it, he let out a small breath, and watched as Toothless let out a few content croons towards Windshear, before returning his gaze to Heather. He rubbed the back of his neck somewhat sheepishly.
“Guess you could say that, yeah. She uh, she kinda followed me here, though. I wasn’t too surprised, but now I’m worried Snotlout and the twins are gonna burn down Dragon’s edge.”
He wrinkled his nose slightly.
“She’ll be glad to see you, though.”
