A modern Higginson’s enema syringe. Note that the two arms or rubber tubing can be detached from the bulb. In the older versions, this was an all-in-one piece of rubber technology. The originals usually had pewter one-way valves, one hidden inside the tubing, and one at the inlet.The problem with this type of enema syringe is that the arms are often too short, and it requires two hands to operate. The inlet end often comes out of the bowl and makes everything wet. For a leak-proof assembly, the inlet arm can be connected by a longer rubber tube to a hot water bottle with a screw connector. And for solo use, a self-retaining nozzle such as a latex or silicone rubber balloon catheter is useful. Japanese Higginson’s syringes have longer arms, and an “acorn” nozzle.
